How to update an old table lamp with your own hands. How to make a table lamp with your own hands and an original Japanese paper lamp

If you are tired of boring and monotonous things in your apartment that you see every day, then it's time to diversify the design with the help of hand made. A DIY table lamp is a great option to get you started. It does not require special skills and efforts, and the result often exceeds expectations. In this article we will tell you how to make a table lamp with your own hands, how to decorate it and how to connect it correctly. We have also prepared an excellent selection of photos for your inspiration for creativity.

DIY table lamp: the main structural elements

The most popular and simple materials for creating a table lamp with your own hands are: cardboard, paper, glass bottles, cans, plastic containers, water pipes and cement. We will tell you how to make a lamp out of all this material.

The main structural elements in a table lamp of any type:

  • Electromechanical - provides stability to a homemade table lamp and a safe power supply directly to the lamp.
  • Reference - supports a reflector or illuminator.
  • Illuminator - a light bulb in a lampshade.

The wiring diagram of a table lamp is quite simple: a mains plug, a cable, a switch, a light bulb holder. Sometimes a voltage regulator is added. The cartridge for the narrow E14 minion base is also mounted on a thread or on a lamella in the form of a steel strip. For a do-it-yourself table lamp, the best option is chandelier cartridges with captive threaded flanges: between them you can clamp a steel faceplate with a lampshade frame or a clamp for mounting on a hinge.

A do-it-yourself table lamp must be electrically safe. This is especially true for lamps on hinges and consoles. You can create the safety of a table lamp using a simple scheme:

  1. The cable must be round, double insulated
  2. The conductors of the cable are flexible, made of numerous wires.
    The cross section lived from 0.35 sq. mm.
  3. Cable entry points must be protected by dense dielectrics.
  4. Before entering the cable, the cable is tied in a knot or pulled through the holes of the dielectric fixing washer so that it cannot be torn. The next step is finishing and decorating.

Original lampshade for a table lamp with your own hands

The lampshade must be made taking into account not only the aesthetic aspect, but also the practical one. It is important to fix it correctly, as well as make a convenient hole for the light bulb. Paper, plastic and thread are the materials most often used to make a homemade lampshade.

The simplest and most convenient material is paper. To create such a lampshade, in addition to paper, you will need: threads, PVA glue, a sewing needle and scissors. There are many ways to make a lampshade for a table lamp with your own hands out of paper. The simplest method is to collect a ball of paper strips on the ceiling, while gluing them together and at the poles. The shape in the form of a sphere will additionally strengthen the fragile lampshade made of paper.

It is also elementary to make a lampshade from disposable plastic cups, which are fastened with a stapler. This lampshade has quite good lighting characteristics, but at the same time the view is quite utilitarian. Such a lampshade is well suited for rooms in which high-quality lighting is necessary, but an aesthetic appearance is not necessary.

When making a lampshade from threads, you will need at least 100 m. It makes no sense to use balloons as mandrels, because after 10-20 turns the ball will begin to bulge in different directions and ruin the shape. It is best to use a tightly inflated, durable ball for the mandrel. The mandrel must be lubricated with Vaseline. Next, pre-lubricated with glue, wind the thread around the ball. When winding, do not forget to leave a hole for the cable and cartridge. After a day, you need to blow off the mandrel, which, thanks to the Vaseline, will not stick to the threads. Also, the threads can be replaced with jute, sisal or propylene twine.

These lampshades form an even soft light and therefore are perfect for any room.

How to update a lampshade for a table lamp with your own hands

Old, tired, worn and burnt out lampshades can be easily updated with the help of improvised means or even create a new one. We will tell you how to do it correctly and beautifully. As materials, you can take any textiles. Using fabrics and threads, you can sew or knit a lampshade in the form of a dress. It is easy to decorate a table lamp shade with your own hands using: buttons, stickers, butterflies, beads, flowers and various braids.

If you want to create an original lampshade from improvised means, then there are a lot of ways. To create such a lampshade, you can use: lids from tins, disposable tableware, your favorite pictures from a photo album, paper with drawings, or just a lampshade decorated with your own hands.

It is enough to turn on your imagination and you will get an original lamp in the interior of your house or apartment. In the photo below, see a selection of lampshade options for a table lamp with your own hands.

Attributes for needlework

A do-it-yourself table lamp can be created from absolutely any necessary and unnecessary things. Everyone in the house will find old items that the hand did not raise to throw out, but there was also nowhere to use them. It's time to give them a second life.

To decorate the lampshade or ceiling, you can use the following details:

  • beads, beads, glass beads, sequins, stones, shells, buttons;
  • cocktail umbrellas that reveal the details of cans;

  • fabrics and textiles, braid, ribbons, threads, bows;
  • newspapers and paper cuttings, drawings for decoupage technique;
  • toys both soft and hard, up to the smallest of kinder surprises.

As a base for a table lamp, you can cut stands out of wood with your own hands or use ready-made ones from under something. You can also use flower pots, plates, an updated base from an old lamp and many other items, or do without a base at all.

A ball, a ball, which at the end of the work is quite easy to remove, can serve as a frame for creating a ceiling.

The easiest way to revive the interior with a new lamp is to repair the old one.

Bottle table lamp

This design option for a light source is very common, since making a table lamp from a bottle is much easier than it seems at first glance.

The bottle can act as an excellent base for a table lamp or as an independent lighting fixture without the addition of a lampshade. This is especially true if there is a bottle or jar of the original shape or color in stock.

A do-it-yourself bottle lamp can have 2 options for connecting light:

  • external - a cord and a bulb holder are fixed outside the bottle;
  • internal - the cord is threaded through the bottle.

In the second option for creating a table lamp from a bottle, you must first make a hole in the bottom so that the bottle does not burst. To do this, it must be buried in a bucket of sand with the neck down, leaving about 5 cm above the sand. A small puddle of water must be poured onto the bottom. Using a diamond drill in the center of the bottle, you need to drill a hole, holding the drill strictly vertically. A similar hole must be made in the bottle cap. Now you can design a table lamp for your desktop, bedside table or window sill.

Lampshades for table lamps

To create a lampshade for a table lamp with your own hands, it is not necessary to be a designer or decorator. There are a huge number of options for decorating lamps, among which everyone will find the right one for themselves, not only to their taste, but also according to their strength. Several ways to make a lampshade for a table lamp from improvised items:

Thanks to decoupage, any old thing will look like from a store shelf. You just need to find beautiful napkins for decorating that fit into the interior and not deviate from the rules for decoupage.
  2. Fabric lampshades. These types of lamps fit well into country interior styles, Provence. You can update an old lampshade with a bright fabric, you can create a completely new one on a wire frame, for example, and shreds. R6
  3. Volumetric flowers and decorations are perfect for a romantic or Moroccan style. You can create decorating elements in the form of flowers from napkins, ribbons, threads, fabrics.
  4. Lampshade embroidery. You can use beads, large beads, sequins.
  5. Mosaic from any flat objects or glass.
  6. The ombre effect is a sign of minimalism. It is enough to stretch the dyed fabric on the frame with two colors smoothly turning into each other.

Several ways to create a table lamp for a doll

Often girls ask their parents for additions to their favorite doll in the form of furniture, clothes, accessories. It is not necessary to immediately refuse the child's request if you do not have enough money. After all, knowing, for example, how to make a table lamp for dolls, you can please your daughter and come up with an interesting activity for her for a while.

Examples of creating doll table lamps:

  1. For manufacturing you will need: a bottle cap, an old unnecessary proofreader with a brush, paint of the desired color, an awl, glue. It's hard to imagine how to make a table lamp for dolls from all these items. But this is only at first glance. First you need to cut off the corrector brush, leaving the cap with the stick and wash them thoroughly. Then, using an awl, you need to make a hole in the bottle cap clearly in the middle. It remains to put a stick with a cap from the corrector into the hole of the lid on the glue and paint the base in the selected color.
  2. In the second version, the base of the lamp will be a button, the frame - beads strung on a toothpick, the ceiling - the cut off lower part of a bottle of drinking yogurt. The parts are put on in the following order: button → glue → bead → toothpick → 5–6 beads → lampshade → glue → bead.

Options for creating table lamps from wood

Increasingly, in the design of modern interiors, preference is given to natural materials and eco-style. The lamps are not far behind. There are a huge number of wooden table lamps, but it is much more pleasant to create decor for your interior on your own, especially if you have interesting ideas and skills in working with wood.

A very simple and original way to create a lamp is to use a log and LED bulbs in a ribbon. A small log needs to be sawn into round uniform layers and a small hole for the base should be made in the center in each. A tube with an LED strip is inserted into the center, and the layers of the logs themselves are located one above the other at a distance through which the light will penetrate.

With the ability to use a jigsaw or an electric saw well, you can create any figure, object or character outline from a decent part of a log. It remains only to grind the base made, draw a cord, insert the light bulb into the cartridge and, if desired, make a lampshade.

An even easier way to create an elegant eco-lamp is to collect sticks of the same size and fix them evenly or obliquely on the old lamp frame. The lampshade can also be updated if desired.

The question of how to decorate lamps made of wood will not even arise. After all, such products in themselves will be an interior decoration.

Video

Hello to all DIY lovers. I think every house has a light source, whether it be a lamp, a chandelier or a backlight, which help in everyday life to one degree or another, but such devices can very rarely boast of originality, since the manufacturer usually does not make a unique product, only except for those what to order, but such a pleasure will cost a lot. That is why it was decided to make an original do-it-yourself beech table lamp, and for anyone who has worked with wood in the slightest degree, assembling such a homemade product will not seem impossible. First you need to decide on the material and tools that will be useful in the manufacture of this homemade product.

Before reading the article, I suggest watching a video about this homemade product.

To make a table lamp with your own hands you will need:
* Beech planks
* Glue for wood
* Planer
* Manual milling cutter
* Sanding machine
* Sawing machine
* Clamps
* Oil for furniture
* Drilling machine
* Dimmer
* Wires with plug
* Electric drill
* Threaded bushing for furniture with M12 thread in 1.25 pitch
* Super glue
* Stud M12 pitch 1.25
* Rubber band
* Sandpaper

That's all you need to assemble such a homemade table lamp.
And now the most interesting, the assembly process.
Step one.
First you need to drive all the beech boards on the thickness gauge, this is done so that their thickness is the same.

We do this from all four sides.

After that, we saw a wide board into small planks, approximately 5 cm wide, of which the head of the lamp will consist.

Step two.
After the boards are ready, they must also be driven on a thicknesser, and then sawn into small pieces using a sawing machine.

The components must be calculated in advance, the cut angle will depend on their number and the desired size of the lamp itself. For simplicity, we take 8 parts, on each of which it is necessary to make a cut at 45 o on both sides, this is done most easily on a sawing machine.

Step three.
When all 8 blanks are adjusted to the size, they can be glued, wood glue will help us with this. Before bonding, it is necessary to sand the surfaces to be bonded to improve the contact patch.

We smear the glue over the entire area of the junction of each part and fasten it with a rubber tie, by the way, it can be easily made from a bicycle chamber.

We remove the excess glue with a rag and leave it to dry for a couple of hours, and while the glue dries, we make three more such parts.

Step four.
After drying all four octagonal blanks, it is necessary to cut at an angle on three of them to create the shape of a lamp. How to do this is more clearly seen in the photo. You also need to make an octagonal bottom.

Step five.
We glue four octagons into one whole, after drying we grind on a grinding machine until a shape similar to a vase is obtained.

When grinding, rotate the workpiece as smoothly as possible, the correct shape of the lamp will depend on this.

Step six.
It's time to make a leg for the lamp, with which you can adjust the direction of the light.
We saw off four small boards of beech and round the edges on a grinder, for this it is best to draw a circle with a compass in advance.

In the center of this circle we drill a hole, we do it on both sides and on each of the boards.

Then you need to make three small boards adjacent to both the lamp head and the base, which will also be rounded on one side, and two small blanks will be needed to glue them together, as in the photo.

Lubricate the gluing points with glue and press with a clamp.

Step seven.
To control the brightness of the light, you need to make a wheel, which will then be put on a dimmer. Similarly to this wheel, we make six more of these, but to fix the position of the lamp.

In the middle, we drill a blind hole and glue the bushing with M12 thread in 1.25 steps with superglue and screw it in until it stops.

To fix the position, you will also need three M12 studs with a pitch of 1.25, which will pass through the entire lamp fixture.

Step eight.
Now you need to make a shield or the so-called base on which the lamp leg itself will be fixed. Its shape is also round, made using a grinding machine.

We grind the surface with a grinder and glue a circle with a smaller diameter on top of an oak thin plank.

For strong bonding, we use clamps, and preferably three at once.

In the meantime, the glue dries, you can apply the first layer of oil on the head of the lamp.

Step nine.
The glue has dried, the oak circle has stuck, which means we proceed to install the dimmer. We disassemble its case, we need the inside itself, drill a hole in an oak mug and mark the dimensions of the board on the reverse side, after which, using a manual milling cutter, we remove excess material to fit the dimmer inside.

Transforming the interior with the help of lamps created according to your own project is an exciting and at the same time useful task. A small luminous detail of the living space invariably attracts attention and the whole life of the house is concentrated around it in the evening and at night.

How to get started

They draw up a step-by-step plan, a sketch of the future device, purchase materials for installing electricians and decor, prepare tools and a workplace. Carefully work out all the points related to safety during the operation and operation of the lamp in everyday life.

Unnecessary and already used things in the household can become a necessary help for the conceived electrical appliance and with their help you can not only save money, but also give them a second life in designer lamps.

Instructions on how to make a lamp with your own hands

Loft-style lamps (the simplest designs) are gaining more and more popularity and are well suited to many types of interior. Factory-made lighting fixtures in this style cost a lot. But a person with assembly skills can easily assemble from scratch, a do-it-yourself 220-volt table lamp that combines metal and wood.

For the stand, a board is selected that is suitable in size, at least 5 cm thick. Processed, trying to preserve the natural texture of the tree - polished, stained.

To attach the legs in the board, make a hole with a drill (diameter 19 mm) half the thickness and screw the adapter into it. A hole is drilled perpendicularly and an electrical wire is pulled through. On the other hand, connect the switch and plug.

To assemble the lamp, they purchase a copper pipe (12 mm), fittings, a cartridge, a lamp, a can of copper paint, super glue. Of the tools used pipe cutter, pliers, screwdrivers.

The pipe is cut into pieces - 50.60, 150, 350 mm. A wire is pulled through the longest segment and connected to the adapter on the stand. Passing a cord through each segment, connect the remaining parts with fittings in the form of the letter "G". For a more stable construction, the parts are glued.

The cartridge, pre-painted with paint, is disassembled and the insulation is cleaned. Connect ground and phase. Screw in a regular 220v light bulb. In stores there is a large selection of retro lamps: Edison and LED, suitable in style, but with modern characteristics.

With your own hands, you can assemble a table lamp from LEDs. Their use significantly saves energy, and the appearance and nature of the lighting look modern and stylish on the table.

What is a dimmer for?

In the loft style, free-hanging light bulbs are welcome - both on tables, and on walls, and even in chandeliers. Depending on the situation, it is appropriate to change their brightness using a dimmer, a device that changes electrical power.

The dimmer changes interior lighting in a wide range and functions as a switch. There are many types on the market. But if you wish, every master can try himself in fine painstaking work and make a dimmer for a table lamp and other lighting fixtures with his own hands.

Parts (triac, dinistor, diode, non-polar capacitor, fixed and variable resistors, LED for indicator) are purchased at any specialized store. Schemes and installation algorithms are available on the sites.

How to make a bottle base

An interesting option for warping the lamp is a glass bottle. Holes are drilled at the bottom and in the lid with a drill. They are connected to a metal support laid horizontally using nuts and washers. An electric cord is threaded through the holes and brought to the neck of the bottle, connecting to the cartridge.

The made ceiling and cartridge are securely fixed at the top of the bottle neck. Glass can be painted with paints or decorated using jute filigree technique.

There is another option. If the neck of the bottle is wide and a cartridge is placed in it, then the wire is led out through it and laborious glass drilling operations are dispensed with.

Frames and their decor

Frames are made from various materials - metal, wood, plastic. To make a metal frame for a lamp with your own hands, they take a hard wire.

With the help of pliers, bending the wire and strengthening it, create the intended shape. Wrap with cloth, paper, jute. If there is a finished metal frame, use it. They change shape with a simple twist.

A metal mesh reinforced around the frame will give additional impetus to the development of creative thought. The mesh is attached to the frame with plastic clothespins and decorated with three-dimensional elements, for example, plastic fasteners-collars.

Jute or decorative rope is passed in longitudinal and transverse strips so that a braid is obtained, or they are wrapped around the ceiling. If necessary, paint with acrylic paints.

An original and effective way to decorate a lampshade is to use beer can keys. You need to accumulate a lot of them. A cut is made in each of the keys, then bent in half to hang it on the top wire ring. Thus, the first row is obtained. For two keys of the upper row, the key of the lower row is hooked, etc.

A simple frame is covered with a beautiful and suitable fabric for the interior, gluing it with silicone glue. Corrugated decorative paper looks good. Plastic bottles and spoons, beads are used. Fans of patchwork and decoupage open up the horizons of the practical application of these techniques. The photo shows the lamps made by hand.

In addition to standard lighting with a cartridge and a light bulb, a light, sticky LED strip with a 12 V DC voltage source is attached to the inside of any lampshade.

What to make a chandelier from and how to hang it

You can use junk and specially purchased materials for the chandelier. It’s easy to make ceiling lamps out of them with your own hands, and if you follow the right connection technique and all successive steps, it’s safe.

The manufacture of frame shades and their decor are discussed above. In addition, chandeliers made of wood, plastic and cut glass bottles, CDs, and cans look very impressive.

The chandelier must be hung on a separate rod. Rigid and flexible suspensions, special cables securely fasten even the lightest chandelier to the ceiling.

The cartridge is disassembled, the cable is pulled, a loop is made under the cover and a lock washer is put on to prevent accidental pulling out of the cartridge. They select and screw with their own hands into the finished lamp socket of a led or Edison lamp. Globe lamps with a frosted bulb and shank are excellent, creating bright, but not eye-catching lighting.

Combining various decor techniques and assembly techniques, understanding electrical engineering, you can create amazing and functional lamps that emphasize the style of the interior.

How to make a table lamp with your own hands?

A beautiful table lamp is obtained from wood and veneer. Despite the ease and simplicity of execution, such a lamp looks very interesting and attracts attention.

Materials and tools for self-manufacturing of the lamp

For a lamp, you can make a beautiful and unique lampshade with your own hands.

Manufacturing process

  1. Before starting, you should transfer the layout of the drawing to the base of the lamp, i.e. draw all the lines on a square segment of the tree. Designate places for installing bars, veneer sheets and the light bulb itself. You should also mark with diagonal lines where the holes will be;
  2. It is not necessary to drill the base through, it is enough for 0.5 of the thickness of the wooden piece. Next, you need to drill each of the bars and insert dowels into the resulting holes. In the center of the stand, make a hole equal to the diameter of the light bulb socket so that it sits tightly in it and does not hang out;
  3. To make holes for placing the veneer, we make small cuts in the bars and stand using a disk-shaped nozzle. It is important to make cuts not over the entire area of the base, but only from one hole to another;
  4. A hole for the wire is made on the base quite deep so that it completely closes there. It is better to make it also wide, so that later there is an opportunity to use fasteners;
  5. At this stage, it is worth carrying out finishing work. Sand all elements, paint if necessary, and varnish;
  6. At the end, we begin assembling all the parts of the lamp. First you need to glue the bars and let them dry, here you can install a light bulb and place the cord. Then, when everything is dry, insert the veneer plates between the bars.

Using this table lamp manufacturing scheme, you can modify its shape, color and texture. The whiter the veneer, the brighter the light will be, and vice versa. Instead of veneer, you can use other materials for playing with shadows.

Based on the style features of table lamps, and applying tips for making it yourself, you can create unusual lamps, turning your fantasies into reality. The main thing is not to be afraid to use at first glance completely incompatible materials and experiment.

Unusual handmade glass bottle table lamp. The process is easy and understandable to absolutely everyone, regardless of the practical skills of manufacturing such products.
