How to make a grinder out of an electric motor. How to make emery with your own hands from a washing machine

Do you have an old washing machine that is beyond repair? Do not rush to get rid of it, from this article you will learn how to make emery from the engine of a washing machine.

A homemade sharpener from a motor is always useful on the farm and for household needs. Moreover, industrial emery is expensive in stores, while a grinder from an automatic washing machine will cost free.

What is sandpaper for?

An emery machine is useful for such work:

  • Restoration of the cutting qualities of the drill. In order not to buy new drills, you need to know how to sharpen old ones. While working with a drill, the drill gets very hot, which is why it constantly becomes dull. Having sharpened it on the machine, you can use it many more times.
  • Sharpening of knives, scissors, shovels and other tools. Thanks to a homemade machine from a washing engine, your knives will always be sharpened, and the scissors will cut perfectly. This does not require much effort.
  • If you replace the emery wheel with a polishing wheel, you can easily process products and parts.

Using the motor from the washing machine, you can make a sharpening machine with your own hands. To do this, you will have to buy only one part - an emery wheel. All other components are in the motor.

Which engine is suitable for making emery

Wondering which engine to use? You can use any motor from a washing machine, even the Vyatka, Riga or Volga brands. The main thing is that it has enough power.

For the normal operation of the grinder, a power of 100-200 W is enough, with 1000-1500 rpm. For particularly large parts, a 400 W motor is suitable. But if the engine speed reaches 3000 rpm, it needs to be adjusted or a very strong disk installed.

What you need to create emery from a washing machine motor

To make a simple grinder you will need:

  • washing machine engine;
  • flange;
  • sleeve;
  • nozzle on the electric motor (emery wheel);
  • casing for protection;
  • support;
  • starting device.

When buying, it is better to choose a product with two circles: a finishing and a rough version.

You also need to make an adapter with a flange. Since the size of the shaft does not match the hole of the grindstone, an adapter must be made. You can perform it on a lathe, having previously determined the dimensions and completed the drawing. On the diagram, it is necessary to note the diameter of the shaft and the emery hole.

The flange on the shaft can be made independently. A piece of pipe with a diameter of 32 mm, no more than 200 mm in length, will do. It should ideally sit on the motor shaft. On one side of the flange, a thread is made, the direction of which depends on the direction of movement of the shaft. When sent to the engine, the other end of the flange is heated and pressed.

Be sure to secure the flange after installation. This can be done by welding or bolting by drilling a flange with a shaft.

The adapter from the shaft is ready. It remains to install the element for sharpening the cutters.

DIY steps for creating emery from a washing machine engine

For a homemade fixture, a belt-driven engine is useful.

It remains to correctly assemble the device. After installing the flange, put on the shaft a nut with a washer, then a large emery wheel and again a nut with a washer.

Motor connection

How to connect the engine from the washing machine:

  • Using a tester-multimeter, look for tachogenerator wires that show a resistance of 70 ohms (usually they are white). We will not use them.
  • There are four wires left. Using a multimeter, you need to determine the paired wires.
  • Connect the wires leading to the stator and to the electric brushes. The remaining wires must be connected to the wire and plug at the end, and then connected to the network.
  • Connection points must be isolated.

Immediately after connecting, the motor for homemade emery will start working, and you will be able to evaluate the functionality of the device.

Connecting the electric motor of Soviet-made washing machines differs from the previous version.

  • Here you will find only 4 wires. Need to find a couple.
  • Take a multimeter, measure the readings of each of the wires. You need paired wires with less resistance that go to the working winding.
  • Connect these wires to the plug and connect to the mains.
  • Now you need to make a launcher. You can use any button, for example, from a door lock. Connect one wire coming from the button to the starting wire (PO), and the other to the working wire (OB).

The motor is now connected. But before starting work, you need to thoroughly fix the machine in order to avoid an emergency.

How to put an emery machine and make protection

How to fix the emery machine and put protection on it? You can bolt it to a workbench.

To do this, use the bracket that is in the washing machine. To reduce vibration during operation, rubber gaskets are put on the corner, which can be made from a piece of hose.

If the device is installed on a wooden workbench, cover it with a sheet of metal on top to avoid fire.

For your own protection, when using the machine, install a metal arc over the disc. You can also enhance the protection by attaching 5 mm thick Plexiglas to the pendants. The glass can be raised and lowered by means of suspension brackets.

Making your own grinder is easy. The main thing is to properly fix and connect it. Also follow the safety rules when working, use safety glasses and special clothing.

Of course, you have heard more than once about the benefits of emery in the household, even if you are not a fan of DIY crafts. After all, in every home there are knives, scissors and other piercing and cutting tools that require sharpening from time to time. But the price of emery in most retail outlets will not please you! And so why not think about making this incredibly useful tool yourself?

Purpose of emery

Many people use drills to make holes in metal with a drill press or drill. After a certain time, the drill starts to get very hot and it is worse to drill, due to the fact that it has become dull. And all this happens quite quickly if the drill is drilled at high speeds. There are cases when the drill breaks off in the middle if it was “bitten” when leaving the metal, and the part was not fixed at the same time.

Accordingly, working with a blunt tool is one torment. Nowadays, few people remember how tool grinders used to go from house to house with small portable sharpeners and sharpen all kinds of tools, including knives. Nowadays, you can, of course, by going to the store, buy a completely new tool with factory sharpening, and you can also sharpen the drill at home.

To sharpen the drills, you should use a purchased grinding machine, and you can also sharpen it with a hand-made emery. A sharpening machine is a necessary and indispensable thing in the household. With it, almost any tool is sharpened, and it can also be used for grinding wood.

Every tool store sells electric emery. Quite a large selection of them. You can buy both a very small sandpaper in order to correct blunt cutting tools, and a fairly powerful grinder with which you can grind a large layer of metal from any part.

The best purchase would be a double-sided electric emery, on one side of which there is a finishing, and on the other rough grinding wheels. These circles must have protective covers to prevent injuries - in case of destruction or damage to the circle while the engine is running. It is also desirable that the electric sharpener has adjustable working stops for sharpened tools and spark-proof shields with protective glass.

Quite convenient are electric emery, in which the speed of rotation is adjustable. When removing a large layer, you need to use increased speed, and it is better to do the “finishing” of the cutting edge at low speeds. This will, of course, eliminate the burning of the metal. From time to time, when sharpening a tool, it is necessary to cool it in a bath of water.

DIY emery

In the hands of every man, there may be an engine from household appliances, and the question immediately begins to huddle in the head, how to make emery with your own hands from improvised materials. For this, all kinds of electric motors are used, on the shaft of which nozzles specially machined on a lathe are installed, which are designed to clamp the emery wheel.

Motor selection

For this purpose, engines from old-made washing machines, such as Volga, Riga, Siberia, Vyatka, etc., are usually used. On such machines, the engines are quite powerful and reverse. Also, from such washing machines, switches with a starter are used.

Despite the fact that it seems quite simple, homemade emery is not at all easy to put together from an engine from a Soviet washing machine. For example, one of the main questions is how to put a grindstone on the motor shaft. After all, there is not always a thread there, and the diameter of the hole in the stone may not coincide with the diameter of the shaft.

Therefore, a special turned part is needed, which would compensate for this disproportion. To make homemade emery with your own hands, you need to know its future parameters. In most cases, for the manufacture of emery at home, usually asynchronous electric motors are used.

For emery, the maximum speed is about 3000 rpm. A grindstone at a very high speed can simply break. It is best to use an engine with 1000 - 1500 rpm at home. If a 3000 rpm electric motor is to be used, a fairly strong stone should be present and a quality flange made. Most often, high engine speeds are used not for sharpening, but for polishing products.

In order to make emery with your own hands, it is not necessary to use powerful electric motors for such purposes. Although experienced craftsmen say that for a home-made grinder, 400 W is acceptable power, and for home use, an engine with a power of about 100 - 200 W from a Soviet washing machine is enough. Of course, he is a little resourceful, but it is very good.

You can use three-phase and single-phase electric motors to make emery with your own hands. Both are included in a single-phase network. The device is connected to a single-phase network through a capacitor.

Flange undercut

To connect the engine and the stone, you need to turn the flange. For such purposes, it is best to contact the turner with a drawing of emery, the dimensions of the inner diameter of the stone and the diameter of the motor shaft. And the rest is a matter of technology and the availability of improvised materials.

You will also have to grind the flange itself, which is mounted on the shaft, and also fixed with a bolt, and a nut, and a washer with a left-hand thread. It is also necessary to take into account that threads are cut on the nut and flange, depending on the direction of rotation of our motor shaft. If clockwise rotation occurs, then the thread must be left-handed, if suddenly the opposite is true, the thread must be right-handed. During the operation of the desktop emery, the emery nut will spontaneously twist. If this factor is neglected, the nut will work to unwind, and therefore the stone may fly off. And, of course, it is extremely dangerous.

What should be done if it is not possible to manufacture point bushings of a certain diameter? In this case, pieces of pipes of a suitable diameter may come in handy, and the gaps between the bushings and the motor shaft can be compensated for by winding fabric-type electrical tape between the bushings. In addition, you can put the bushings one on top of the other.

In this case, the most important thing when winding electrical tape is to maintain uniformity in order to avoid the formation of large beats during rotation. The sleeve is made from a pipe with a diameter of 32 millimeters, equal to the inner diameter of the emery wheel. An emery wheel is put on it directly, which could sit with an interference fit without winding.

Such a bushing system sits quite tightly on the shaft. But with the help of a bolt and washers, fixing is required. At home, in the shaft, you can cut the thread with a tap, while holding the motor shaft in a vise. In this case, it is necessary to determine the diameter of the hole correctly for the thread.

Direction of work

Before you make emery at home, you need to find out the direction of his work. In handmade emery, you can change the direction of rotation of the rotor. If, for example, the engine is from a washing machine, then it is asynchronous, that is, when switching the corresponding windings, you can change the direction of rotation. Also in motors from household appliances of old production there are 3 - 4 outputs. For example, with 4 pins, changing the direction of rotation is not difficult.

For these purposes, we find the starting and working winding using a tester. The level of resistance of the working winding, as a rule, is 12 ohms, and the starting winding is close to 30 ohms. The working winding is connected to a 220 W network, and the starting winding is connected securely with one end to one output of the coil, and the other end must be briefly touched to the second output of the winding and then immediately discarded (usually special relays are used for this). If you are using a capacitor motor, then the switching circuit will be different.

This means that your emery will spin in one direction, and if, for example, you change the conclusions of the starting winding in places, then the engine will rotate accordingly in the opposite direction. In general, in principle, you can do without a starting coil, in this case, after turning on the working winding in the network, you need to turn the abrasive stone in a certain direction, and the machine will then work.

Installing emery

After you have made homemade emery, you should figure out how to properly install it on a workbench. This is done using a bracket, which is also removed from the washing machine and bolted to the workbench. The engine, on the other hand, rests on an angle that supports it in a horizontal position, and also has a cutout that completely repeats the shape of the engine housing. To reduce vibration, a fringing made of a rubber piece of hose is put on the corner.

To avoid injury from the saw and flying fragments of the abrasive wheel when working on a do-it-yourself grinder, you need to make a casing. It is best to make it from thicker metal - 2 - 2.5 millimeters. It can be a strip of metal rolled into a half ring.

Under the working body of the emery, you directly need to screw a small piece of galvanized sheet iron, which will protect the workbench from sparks during operation. For your own safety, all work must be carried out with special glasses or other protection.

As devices for emery, you can use plexiglass, 5 millimeters thick. Such glass is attached to the engine casing with the help of hinges; it can be tilted 180 degrees. Also, for the usefulness of the machine, it is necessary to make a handpiece to stop the workpiece.

Of course, the benefits of an electric grinder cannot be doubted! After all, you will not use a new ax or drill every time. Yes, and buying emery for this is somehow expensive. But there is a way out, you just have to spend a little time and collect emery with your own hands. Follow our instructions carefully, provide the necessary protection for the machine and do not neglect the safety requirements during operation.

Each owner, one way or another, is faced with a situation where she needs to sharpen knives, scissors and other sharp objects that become dull over time. You can turn to the master every time and pay a lot of money for his services or buy ready-made emery, or you can be smart and please your wallet by making emery with your own hands.

Basic materials and tools

The principle of operation of a homemade device

In order to design homemade emery, you need an electric motor left over from the operation of old household appliances.

It is the electric motor that starts the product into operation, as a result of which the nozzles, previously sharpened on the turning equipment, installed on the engine shaft, sufficiently clamp the emery wheel.

How to choose an electric motor

Most often, craftsmen choose an electrical device left over from the old production as an engine, for example, Volga, Siberia or Vyatka. As you know, the equipment made in Soviet times was of high quality, so the engines were also powerful enough, with high reverse rates. From such a washing machine, you will also need a switch with a manual starter mechanism.

The main difficulty to be faced is the exact placement of the grindstone directly on the engine shaft. The shaft does not always have a thread, the size of the hole in the stone may also not correspond to the size of the shaft. A specially machined part will help to cope with this task, which will smooth out the dimensional discrepancy.

The maximum speed limit used in emery is 3000 rpm. This nuance cannot be ignored, because a high frequency of rotation can cause the grindstone to break. It is preferable to use a product with an engine from 1000 to 1500 rpm at home.

However, if you wish, you can also make a more durable emery with your own hands, for this it is enough to fix a high-quality flange. A powerful device may be needed rather than for sharpening, but for polishing different surfaces.

So, the power of a wear-resistant machine should be 400 W, at home, 100–200 W is enough.

Manufacturing process

Flange undercut

As you know, the flange connects the engine and the stone. If you do not have experience working on a lathe, seek help from a specialist by providing a detailed drawing of the future device, with measurements of the diameter of the stone on the inner surface and the size of the shaft.

The made flange must be correctly mounted on the shaft, fix the result with fasteners, for example, a bolt and nut, it is preferable to use an additional threaded washer located on the left side.

Depending on the shaft rotation vector, a thread is formed on the fasteners. Clockwise rotation requires left-hand threading, counter-clockwise requires right-hand threading. This is the principle of tightening the nut, if it is neglected, the part will unwind, and the stone will most likely fly off the set place, which is traumatic for a person who works with emery.

However, not everyone has the opportunity to make emery with their own hands with point bushings of a certain size, as required by the technology. Pieces of pipes will help to cope with this situation, cracks and voids formed between the bushings and the shaft can be hidden by winding with textile tape. Another option is the sequential placement of a smaller bushing in a larger one.

When winding electrical tape, follow uniformity. The sleeve is made from a pipe with a diameter of 32 mm, coinciding with the inner diameter of the emery circle. After that, the circle must be placed on top of the sleeve.

Accounting for the direction of work of emery

Before you make emery with your own hands, decide on the vector of its work. For convenience, you can independently change the direction of revolutions that the rotor makes. If the engine is taken from a washing machine, it can be considered asynchronous, which means that there are no obstacles to changing the direction of rotation.

Find the windings designed for start-up and operation, use the tester. How to distinguish between starting and working windings? The resistance index of the first reaches 30 ohms, the working one - 12 ohms. The working element is connected to a 220 W power supply, the starting one works when one end is connected to one of the terminals located on the coil, it is enough to touch the other end for a short time to the next terminal and immediately set aside.

Self-installation of emery

After the homemade emery is designed, proceed to fix it on the workbench. Remove from the equipment and fix the product to the workbench with bolts. Position the engine horizontally. To reduce the degree of vibration that occurs during installation, put on a corner made of a rubber piece of elastic hose.

Safety precautions provide for the creation of a special casing that will protect against chipping fragments of a circle with an abrasive. Use a thick metal ring (strip), 2–2.5 mm in size.

Position the sander so that it is convenient for you to work with it.

A small piece of galvanized sheet should be fixed under the workpiece, which will serve as a good protection for the workbench from flying flammable sparks. Don't forget to wear special goggles.

The emery machine will be more complete and professional if you use plexiglass, the thickness of which is 5 mm, it is fixed to the engine casing. Optionally, you can design a homemade emery with glass that leans back at an angle of 180 degrees. Convenience will add a handist on which you can lean.

Conclusion

You have already made sure that you can collect emery with your own hands at home. A little diligence, patience, and a useful device will be constructed.

Follow the above, do not neglect the basic safety rules, treat the process responsibly, everything is in your hands.

On the farm, there is a constant need to sharpen knives and other household items. Some turn to paid services for help, while others find an original solution by making their own sandpaper. How to make emery with your own hands at home? You can learn about this from this article, which contains the experience of a large number of homemade products.

Emery is needed to perform a variety of jobs. For example, it can be sharpening drills. During operation, the drills heat up and, as a result, become dull. Throwing them away and buying new ones is a completely illogical decision. Moreover, with the presence of emery, you can sharpen drills yourself. This also applies to kitchen knives. Perhaps more than one housewife asks her husband to sharpen a knife. The usual friction of a knife against a knife is a difficult task, especially since such sharpening will not be long-term. For this reason, having your own emery at home is always a plus.

Although, of course, you can not waste time making a homemade device, since you can buy ready-made emery, still, with all the necessary parts, why not make emery yourself?

One of the important components of homemade emery is an adapter with a flange. It can be made on a lathe. What does that require?

  1. Make a sketch.
  2. Determine the dimensions of the motor shaft diameter.
  3. The diameter of the inner hole of the grinding stone.

As for the manufacture of the flange, it can be made separately or directly on the adapter. Depending on the direction of the shaft, the threading direction must be selected. If the shaft moves clockwise, then the thread is left-handed, and exactly the opposite. In this case, the nut will twist arbitrarily during the operation of the emery. And this, in turn, will make the operation of emery safe.

What if there is no suitable cylindrical material for the adapter sleeves? In this case, take a thick-walled pipe. The resulting gap between the hub and the motor can be filled with woven electrical tape. However, this option is not the most reliable.

In order not to have to reel up, you can use a metal pipe with an outer diameter of 32 mm. She will dress quite simply and securely.

Very often emery is made from the engine of a washing machine. It is necessary to put emery on the motor shaft and fix it on it. So, you can use the engine from the washing machine "Vyatka", "Riga", etc. These and similar engines have sufficient power. You will also need to take a starter from such devices.

The recommended number of revolutions for emery is 1000-1500 per minute. If the revolutions exceed 3 thousand, then this can lead to a break in the circle. The higher the engine power, the stronger the emery wheel will be required, as well as the mount for it.

As for power, 100 or 200W will be enough. If it is necessary to sharpen large parts, then the motor can reach a power of up to 400 watts.

The fastening of the emery should be taken carefully. The safety of its operation directly depends on the quality of fastening. It is recommended to use brackets for fastening to a workbench. You should also use a corner with a rubber gasket to reduce vibration. Be sure to make a protective cover that will protect your eyes and other exposed areas of the body from splinters. The casing is made of a strip of metal up to 3 mm thick. Cut out the strip and fix it in the shape of a half ring on the sandpaper.

Also note that when sharpening metal products, sparks can form. To protect the workbench (especially if it is wooden) from fire, it is recommended to install a metal sheet under the bottom.

To increase the quality of protection, plexiglass up to 5 mm thick can be fixed to the engine casing. Having fixed it on hinges, it can be thrown back.

It is equally important to pay attention to safety precautions. You can not work on a workbench in clothes whose sleeves hang down.

So, we examined with you the features of making homemade emery. If you have your own experience in this work, then write your comments at the end of this article. For beginners, we recommend that you additionally view the prepared video material.

How to make emery (grinding machine)? This question is asked by many novice craftsmen who are tired of sharpening everything on their knees, using a file or an angle grinder. Of course, you can buy a ready-made emery machine, but the quality of many inexpensive Asian products leaves much to be desired, and worthwhile products from reputable European or American companies, which also have decent power and dimensions, are quite expensive. In this article, we will look at what and how to make an inexpensive emery machine that will be of excellent quality and will delight the master for many years. Moreover, two manufacturing options will be described. First you need to decide on the diameter of the abrasive wheel, because the larger the diameter, weight and thickness of the circle, the more powerful the electric motor will be required. And if you often have to work with small things, then the future machine may have very modest dimensions and power. The most common engine from the Soviet washing machine is suitable for it.

If you work with large products, for example, you often have to turn profile or ordinary pipes, fittings, etc., then the machine must be powerful and large. As I said, this article will describe two options for making emery, one is simpler, and the second is more complex.

So, if you want a large and powerful emery for processing large parts in your workshop, then it is preferable for you to choose the second manufacturing option (which will be described below). If you need sandpaper for processing small things, then I advise you to choose the first, simpler manufacturing option.

How to make emery is an easier option.

To begin with, we will describe a simpler option in which the abrasive wheel (or wheels) will be fixed directly on the motor shaft. First you need to make a base on which the engine itself will be fixed. The base can even be made of wood, but metal is still better.

Of course, it’s better to look for an engine at 220 volts, but if you don’t find it, you can connect it to 380. I wrote in detail how to connect the motor to both 220 and 380 volts to a regular household network. If you buy a motor with a speed of 3000 / min., Then the manufacture of the bushing, which will be described below, must be very accurate in order to eliminate vibration. Such a revving motor should be used if you want to polish parts for (I made one specifically for polishing - it is shown in the photo on the left).

And for processing parts with abrasive stones, an engine of 1500 - 2000 rpm will be enough. If your engine has a platform at the bottom with four holes, then everything is simple here, the motor lies on the base, future holes are marked with a pencil or marker and then drilled. It remains to fix the motor to the base with four bolts, and the base itself can be mounted anywhere (even in a vise, as I mount in the photo above), from a table or workbench, using clamps or wing bolts.

And such emery will be mobile (portable). Only when attaching the motor to the base, you should take into account the diameter of the abrasive wheel, that is, fix the engine at such a height that the circle does not touch the base.

1 - armature shaft, 2 - motor bearing, 3 - motor housing, 4 and 5 - casing, 6 - tube, 7 - sleeve, 8 - abrasive wheel, 9 - key.

After fixing the engine to the base, now the main task is how to fix the stone (abrasive wheel) on the engine shaft. After all, the outer diameter of the armature shaft in 99 cases out of a hundred has a diameter that is smaller than the landing diameter of the abrasive wheel. So you should order a turner adapter sleeve 7, which is shown in the figure on the left.

The bushing should fit snugly on the motor shaft (with a slight tap of a hammer), and the abrasive wheel should fit snugly on the bushing. Many people use pipe cuts instead of a sleeve, and tape, paper, etc. are wound around them. I do not advise you to do this, because even if you manage to fit the circle tightly on a piece of tube, imbalance and vibration will still occur in the process of work over time.

And if you want to assemble the machine and forget about the problems with imbalance, then do not spare some money for turning work (to machine the sleeve with a tight fit). On the motor shaft, an external thread for a nut (with a fine pitch) should be cut, and the thread should be right or left, depending on the rotation of the stone (so that under load and turning the stone, the nut is twisted and not unscrewed).

Well, the last operation will be the manufacture of a table on which the part will be placed during turning. The table can be made from a piece of an ordinary corner, and made so that when the stone wears out, the table can be moved to the stone to provide a gap of 1-1.5 mm (between the table and the abrasive wheel).

If you are counting on short-term operation of the emery, then on the other side of the motor shaft you can remove the fan impeller and fix a stone with a finer abrasive, or a drill chuck (as on my emery shown in the photo above). Then the capabilities of the machine will become greater, it will be possible to fix, for example, a wire (cleaning) wheel or a polishing wheel of small diameter into the chuck, and in general, quickly install any nozzle.

Making emery, as in the photo on the left, is more difficult than the first option described above, but the engine power and dimensions can be any, and the speed can be changed at any time by transferring the belt to another pulley. And the engine can be changed if desired.

But such a machine will require more investment and more tools. You will also need a grinder, since you will have to make a frame from a metal corner (or from a profile pipe).

A frame (table) such as in the photo on the left is needed so that with this option the motor is located separately at the bottom, and the rotation of the shaft (with two abrasive or polishing wheels) fixed on top is transmitted through a belt drive.

The height of the frame depends on the length of the belts and your height, and the width depends on the size of the motor and the length of the shaft mounted on the bearings.

In the middle, a pulley will need to be pressed onto the shaft, as shown in the photo on the left, but it is better to press the stepped pulley shown in the photo below, and how many steps (tracks) there will be, so many speeds will your emery have.

Pulleys (two pieces - one for the shaft and the other for the engine) are either bought at a flea market, or ordered by a turner. Of course, the inner diameter of the pulleys must be such that they are pressed tightly onto the motor shaft and onto the shaft for emery wheels.

The shaft for circles in the middle (where the pulleys fit) should be a few mm thicker (and keyed) than at the edges, so it will be easier to mount the pulleys. All shaft diameters can be different and depend on the diameter of the bearings and pulleys, and the length of the shaft depends on the width of the frame (table).

After welding the frame (in the form of a parallelogram, as in the photo above), two shaped pipes, a corner or a sheet metal plate, with holes for the holes of the supports (or two corners) are welded on top, on which the bearing supports of the shaft will be attached.

But first we put on the belt, and after that we attach the supports to the pipes. Along the length of the belt, it will be possible to see at what distance to weld the engine mount (platform). The platform for the engine should have oval holes for mounting the motor so that you can move the motor down a little to tighten the belt.

In general, there are several ways to tension the belt, for example, the motor is mounted on a platform, which is fixed on canopies (such as door doors), and with the help of a thrust threaded stud, the engine is shifted down and the belt is tensioned. But it is better to make an eccentric belt tensioning mechanism, so it will be possible to quickly throw the belt over the pulleys in order to change the speed of rotation of the shaft.

Which option to choose, each master chooses based on the conditions and opportunities (or from the rubbish that is lying around in the garage). After mounting the shaft and motor, you can close the frame with metal plates and start installing abrasive stones on the ends of the shaft. Here, too, as in the first option, you can install two stones, or you can make a longer shaft with an additional thread or cone on one side (depending on the cartridge) and install a drilling chuck after the stone.

It will be possible to clamp various nozzles into the cartridge. It remains to make support tables (an example can be found in the article about the grinder - link above) well, do not forget about safety - it does not hurt to make protective covers from sheet steel and close the abrasive wheels with them on the reverse side. Well, also make casings for collecting chips (abrasive) as in the photo a little higher and also cover the drive pulleys with a casing.

Well, it does not hurt to fix a small container for coolant (water) to cool the workpiece or tool. An example of such a homemade grinding machine is shown in the video below. I advise you to look, because as they say: it is better to see once than hear a hundred times.

There are other machine designs, but I hope these couple of options on how to make emery, described in this article, will be useful to novice craftsmen and help them make a machine with their own hands, which will be even better than the factory one, success to everyone.
