How and with what to seal a pvc boat. Strengthening the bottom of the boat pvc Repair of rubber boats

Do you need an urgent repair of a rubber boat? In this case, glue, which is designed specifically for gluing rubberized things, will be an excellent helper.

Today, there are a huge number of adhesives on the market, but it can be difficult to choose among them really high-quality ones.

Each glue has a number of features and, of course, disadvantages. Many are accustomed to arguing on this topic, because they are extremely convinced that with the help of glue it is almost impossible to seal all the tears and punctures in a rubber boat.

What kind of glue to glue the rubber boat?

Before answering the main question, some important features of rubber boat glue should be noted, which will help determine the right choice of the right product.

So, some tips, subject to which, you can choose a really high-quality glue:

  • Do not pay attention to too cheap glue options, after all, there is a huge probability that instead of such a necessary assistant you will get an incomprehensible mixture. Such a substance not only does not stick together cracks, but can even harm rubber.
  • If you want to seal a rubber boat for a long time or even permanently, then you should never buy superglue (cyanoacrylate glue). Of course, he will glue all the tears on the boat within a few minutes, however, believe that you will not enjoy the integrity of the boat for long.
  • Choose an adhesive with high temperature resistance.
  • If there is a choice between special and universal glue, feel free to give your preference to the first option.
  • When gluing the boat, remember that water and humidity are bad.
  • The main criterion for choosing the right adhesive will be its non-stickiness. There is an opinion that the higher the stickiness of the glue, the less durable it is.
An excellent option for gluing boats is rubber glue, most often which comes with the boat. If this was not the case, in this case, you can purchase black glue with the name "Radical".

Such glue is distinguished by availability, strength and good water resistance. When choosing an adhesive for a rubber boat, many also prefer polychloroprene adhesives.

And most importantly: always when buying a special glue, pay attention to its composition, which is indicated directly on the package.

Pay special attention to the heat resistance of the adhesive. The higher the heat resistance, the better the sold product.

Rubber boat repair

Repairing a rubber boat is a rather complicated process, but as practice shows, only for beginners.

If you have previously found yourself face to face with a holed boat, then re-repairing the watercraft will not be a big problem for you.

First of all, it is necessary to understand exactly where exactly you need to start repairing rubber boats. So, first you need to prepare additional materials and devices that will definitely help you when gluing cracks or gaps.

You will need:

  1. Small (the size of the crack) pieces of rubber that are suitable for patches;
  2. Specialized rubber adhesive.

Before repairing, you first need to find out exactly where the leak has formed. And for this, it is necessary to pump up the boat with air and go down into the water.

Why do it? Such simple actions will help you quickly find a leak and all puncture sites. They will definitely show themselves in small bubbles.

When the places of punctures and cracks are found, it is necessary to blow off the boat and you can safely proceed to direct repairs. To begin with, a high-quality material is selected, which in all respects is suitable for patches.

It is from this material that small pieces will be cut. An interesting tip from experienced crafters: the pieces of rubber should be slightly larger than the main hole in order to completely cover it.

Moreover, the edges need to be rounded. This will help to further protect the boat from any waste of the glued fabric.

For strong bonding, the surface of the boat is rubbed with fine-grained sandpaper. Such a simple technique is needed in order for the surface of the rubber boat to become a little rough.

In this case, you can ensure a sufficiently strong bonding of the rubber piece directly to the boat. To repair a rubber boat, it is best to use the glue that came with it in the kit.

If this did not turn out, then you can safely buy glue called "Radical" or any other polychloroprene glue.

For a more durable bonding of rubber surfaces, a few simple tips should be remembered.

  1. In order for the rubber patch to adhere more firmly to the boat, it is necessary to degrease them by any method.. Gasoline, acitone, solvent are best suited.
  2. Notice that the cracks on the boat are too big? In this case, tighten the gaps with strong nylon threads. This will provide good enough protection.
  3. When bonding rubber surfaces, different adhesives can be used. Many of them require additional drying during operation, with which a regular hair dryer can easily help you.
  4. When working with glue, it is strongly recommended to ventilate the room well, or work directly on the street. However, there are several other important factors to consider. For example, one of these is air humidity, which should not exceed 60%.

Ignoring these rules can lead to a very sad result.

Moreover, if you are gluing in the sun, at temperatures over 16 degrees, or with greasy hands, then you can not even count on a well-glued boat.

How to glue the bottom?

The main part of the boat is the bottom. It is it that is most often subjected to mechanical damage.

In order to glue the bottom back to the boat, you also need to follow some rules.

First of all, the damaged bottom must be completely torn off from the body of the boat, then warm it up with a hairdryer and clean it with sandpaper.

Your next step will be to glue the sealing tape.

And only then the bottom is attached back. Experienced craftsmen recommend performing all these actions strictly on a very tightly inflated rubber boat.

Now you need to lower the boat and roll all the places that were previously glued, and leave everything in this state for 48 hours.

When working with the bottom, it is worth considering all the basic rules that were previously mentioned.

Popular brands of glue for rubber boats

One of the most popular adhesives today is rubber adhesive brand 4508. It is made on the basis of natural rubber.

The main features of this glue:

  • good stickiness;
  • elasticity of joints;

There is also a polyurethane adhesive that has quite strong adhesive qualities. Glue "Gummi" is made on the basis of rubber and provides excellent water resistance.

Radical

Glue "Radical" is popular among many owners of inflatable rubber boats. It can withstand fairly low temperatures, heavy loads and even salty sea water.

It is based on a solution of rubbers mixed with other solvents.

Frequently asked Questions

When repairing rubber boats, owners often face difficult moments in the process.

To resolve controversial situations and to find answers to extraordinary questions, most beginners, and even professional fishermen, turn to specialists for help or look for answers on the Internet.

Is it possible to use Moment glue in the repair of rubber boats?

One of the most exciting issues is the possibility of using Momenta glue when repairing a rubber boat.

In fact, the answer to this question is quite simple.

You can use Moment glue when repairing rubber boats.

The main advantages of such a tool are as follows:

  • fast bonding of two surfaces;
  • ease of use.

However, when choosing Moment glue, be prepared for the fact that it is sensitive to high temperatures. Also, it dries instantly when exposed to direct sunlight.

Working with him, it will be necessary to perform all the gluing steps very quickly. Moreover, the final effect will also be much to be desired.

A boat glued with Moment glue will not last long, and, most likely, after a while it will fall apart and unstick again. It is for these reasons that it is not recommended to be used by more experienced fishermen.

How to clean old glue from a rubber boat?

It is quite difficult to wash old glue from a rubber boat. It is worth considering the fact that when gluing two surfaces, rubber glue is quickly absorbed into the rubberized surface of the boat itself.

You should also not remove old dried glue with aggressive solvents or other substances if you do not want to permanently ruin the fabric of your own boat.

Shoe glue for rubber boat repair

Some specialists use shoe (nairite) glue to repair a rubber boat. It is mainly used for gluing not only rubber, but also leather, wood, fabric and other materials. It is used for repairs, like the rest.

Does the thought of the upcoming fishing haunt you? In this case, check your boat for mechanical damage as soon as possible.

If you accidentally find a small crack or gap, do not be upset. Believe me, with rubber boat glue you can get your boat in order in a short period of time, and at the same time, without much effort.

Made from rubber and PVC, enthusiasts build boats from plastic bottles, plywood and other material.

But, this article is about making a boat out of tape!

Scotch tape has high tear strength and is waterproof, so it can be used to make a homemade boat.

A duct tape boat is built in several stages.

The first stage in the manufacture of the boat is to build a frame of reinforcing iron or steel bars, which is the base of the future boat. Without such a steel frame, the boat will be very flexible and unreliable on the water. It is on it that tape will subsequently be applied.

This is very similar to the way the American Indians made boats. They stretched animal skins on a light wooden frame.

But, in our case, materials are much more effective. Steel, unlike wood, does not rot and is very durable. And adhesive tape has a water-repellent ability, and is much better suited in the manufacture of a boat than animal skins.

Steel bars must be joined by welding. Of course, without knowledge of welding technology, a high-quality frame will not work. If you are not a professional in this activity, invite a specialist who understands welding and drawings.

Because the manufacture, fastening and all bends in the boat must be done strictly according to the drawings. The frame must be perfectly symmetrical, streamlined, and have equal distances between the individual steel bars.

The mast, keel and rudder are also made of steel rods. They are attached last. After welding the necessary parts, proceed to the manufacture and installation of the mast.

The mast is installed on the deck. Our homemade boat has already acquired the desired shape. Now it's time for the longest and most important process - stretching the tape on the steel frame, this can take a long time from six to ten hours, it all depends on the intensity of the work and on the number of people involved in building the boat.

Adhesive tape is used construction, which has an increased density. About three hundred skeins of adhesive tape are needed to build a boat. This material is waterproof and has good durability. When it is stretched, the layers should fit snugly against each other and not have holes, even the smallest ones.

Adhesive tape in the manufacture of a homemade boat is applied in two layers, first across, and the second layer along the frame. This avoids leaks and increases the strength of the "skin" of a homemade boat.

The first layer is applied with the adhesive side out and the second layer with the adhesive side in. Bonded layers will be very difficult to separate, so tape must be applied carefully, this is a very responsible procedure. The success of future construction will depend on it.

At the end of construction, install wooden seats. Attach them with wire loops to the sides of the future boat, in the most convenient places.

The boat is ready! It looks like a modern sailboat.

It remains only to transfer the boat to the water, raise the sail and set sail.

But the option of making a kayak from adhesive tape, it uses bamboo as a frame.

It is necessary to strengthen the bottom on a PVC boat, what option can you offer?

Classic booking option - PVC boat bottom reinforcement fender strips 235 mm wide. At the same time, there are several schemes for reinforcing the bottom of the PVC boat in this case and it depends on your wishes.

Partially reinforce the cylinders and the keel of the PVC boat - three strips.
Reinforce the bottom as a whole - from six strips of a fender 235 mm wide with an overlap. It is also possible to add halt strips with a width of 60 mm, but as a rule this is superfluous.
In this case, you will receive a boat fully prepared for the assault on a shallow and rocky river.

Why you need to strengthen the bottom of the boat

Of the benefits - The boat will turn out to be more stable and will become more manageable.
Moreover, unlike PVC boat bottom armor various transparent films or sprayed polymers that do not provide adequate protection against stones and snags, you get a double bottom, the first is the PVC material of the boat itself, the second is PVC tape tightly glued to the bottom of the boat. This design is more reliable and durable.

Cons of booking PVC boats

Of the minuses - after we strengthen the bottom on a PVC boat, your watercraft will add to weight, for example, a PVC boat with a length of 3200 will weigh 6-8 kg more.

Guarantee for work on booking / strengthening the bottom

As with all other work, we provide a guarantee.
When carrying out works on booking the bottom, imported two-component compounds intended for production of inflatable products from PVC materials, the same ones that are used at the factories of the leading St. Petersburg manufacturers of PVC boats.

Glue preparation and subsequent gluing of boats is carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of PVC compound manufacturers(adhesive bases) such as - the life time of a diluted compound (glue), temperature conditions, expiration date, which allows us guarantee the quality of work performed.
The cost of materials consists of the price of used glue and PVC halt in running meters.
The cost of work is calculated from the length of the boat and your choice of full or partial bottom booking.

One of the main components of the equipment of a modern angler is considered to be a reliable swimming facility, in particular a boat made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is quite convenient, practical, resistant to ultraviolet rays, aggressive substances and does not create additional difficulties during transportation, with proper care and timely repair, the product can last for a dozen years.

No matter how carefully the owner treats his watercraft, breakdowns and various damage to the vessel often occur. And here the problem arises, which adhesive to choose and how to properly patch. To deal with this issue, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the types of glue and the features of their application.

Choosing the Best Adhesive

Not only the comfort of passengers, but, most importantly, their safety on the water depends on well-conducted repair work on an inflatable watercraft. With the wrong approach, the patch may depressurize, the boat will begin to release air or fill with water, which will lead to negative consequences.

A quality adhesive must meet the following requirements:

Types of glue used, features, advantages and disadvantages

Based on numerous observations of experienced anglers, the following types of adhesives have proven themselves well:

Ideal for bonding most types of rubber, in particular for repairing PVC products. Advantages: high degree of resistance to water, atmospheric changes, forms a reliable elastic seam.

From a German manufacturer, made on the basis of Desmocoll rubbers, it is positioned as a professional universal and waterproof product. "Master" is designed for gluing products made of leather, plexiglass, rubber, PVC, paper, cardboard, fibrous fabrics.

"UR - mono" from the category of one-component compositions, used without additional hardeners, has a high degree of water resistance, has good resistance to ultraviolet rays, low toxicity. Most often, it is used to repair PVC - coatings.

Vinicol - 1520 from a series of polyurethane compounds, the main purpose is to bond surfaces made of synthetic materials, including PVC boats. The tool has a fairly high resistance to hydrolysis.

"From polyvinyl chloride 900I"- polyurethane adhesive, its scope is extensive: balls, plastic awnings, air mattresses, swimming pools, rubber soles, PVC fabrics. The composition has good resistance to various oils, gasoline, water and acids.

"Penosil Fix Go" positioned as cold welding, based on two epoxy substances. Benefits: Instant hardens, easy to process, ideal as an emergency aid when bonding PVC surfaces. "Penosil Fix Go" has a very strong binding ability.

It is very popular among consumers, the positive qualities of the adhesive include: super strength, reusable, able to withstand loads up to 250 kg / cm2, firmly glues dissimilar surfaces.

The choice of glue, which is better to use

In order to qualitatively eliminate various damages on the surface of a watercraft made of PVC material, it is recommended to use glue 4508. The presence of natural components (rubber and resin) allows you to achieve the necessary elasticity of the seam and protect the gluing site from the negative effects of moisture.

The use of rubber adhesive and polyurethane-based adhesive also gives good results, the main thing is to comply with all requirements for the use of this composition.

Application of glue

Before proceeding with the repair work of the swimming facility, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface:

  1. a damaged inflatable boat must be deflated;
  2. wash and dry the problem area well;
  3. in order to avoid the formation of subsequent folds in the working area, it is recommended to place a flat board under it and level the fabric sheath;
  4. degrease the problem area with any solvent, acetone.

This concludes the preparatory work.

What repair materials will be required

After a thorough inspection of the PVC inflatable boat, and having identified the problem area, we proceed to the preparation of the appropriate accessories for repair:

  • repair kit, it is laid down by the manufacturer and is included in the package for the boat;
  • construction knife, scissors;
  • roller or metal plate;
  • pencil, marker;
  • small brush;
  • water, soap, rags;
  • any solvent, the use of alcohol is allowed;
  • special glue for rubber products.

The above list of tools will be required when carrying out repair work at home or on the shore of a reservoir. If the damage needs to be repaired directly while fishing, then it is more efficient to use a repair kit and a lighter.

The standard repair kit includes materials that allow in field conditions to eliminate the cause of vessel depressurization in a short time. The set consists of a tube of special glue, a set of PVC fabrics with a diameter of 40 mm and 80 mm (6 pieces).

Lubricate the inside of the patch and the bonding point on the boat with a special adhesive

Instructions for use

  1. The problem area must be cleaned of various contaminants. The use of sandpaper is inappropriate here, there is a high probability of tissue damage. This option is more suitable for heavily ingrained dirt.
  2. Degrease the working surface with either a solvent or acetone. The main thing is to observe the measure in everything, otherwise the rubber fabric may corrode.
  3. Based on the size of the defect, a patch of the desired configuration is cut out. In size, it should exceed the actual size of the hole by several centimeters. The cut patch is applied to the damaged area and outlined with a pencil.
  4. Lubricate the inside of the patch and the bonding point on the boat with a special adhesive. Allow the glue to dry a little (10 minutes) and apply a layer of glue to the work surfaces again. Hold for a couple of minutes.
  5. Surface bonding. With the help of a hair dryer, it is necessary to slightly heat the problem area and apply the prepared patch to it. The main condition is to check the area for the presence of an air gap. In order for the glued place to “grab” better, it must be rolled well with a roller. It is better to operate the repaired water craft in 2-3 days.

For minor damage (scratches) it will be enough to fill them with glue, but it is better to apply a patch.

To eliminate holes with a diameter of more than 5 cm, it is recommended to use two patches: both on the inside and on the outside. The internal patch should be glued first, and after the second.

Storage

It is recommended to store adhesives in a tightly closed package, a tube at a temperature of +15 - +25 degrees. The storage place must be dry, protected from fire, freezing. Do not use, store and transport the adhesive at low temperatures, its working qualities are lost.

  • Glue for repairing PVC boats must be of high quality and special purpose.
  • The use of cheaper options does not guarantee the reliability of the seam.
  • When carrying out repair work to eliminate various damages on the boat, it is recommended to follow the clear instructions described above.

In the last water-motor season, closer to autumn, with the help of my friend Alexey, I managed to make a small upgrade of my PVC boat. I took a bigger boat with a keel and an inflatable bottom. But the manufacturer (the GRUPER company) is so carried away by saving and lightening the boats that practically no attention is paid to strengthening the bottom. It had only one thin strip (5 cm) of a fender running along the keel, which, as it turned out during the operation of the boat, does not really protect the bottom from any undesirable circumstances.

During the next drying of the boat, some abrasions were found next to the installed "gain", which was very upsetting and required immediate intervention.

After assessing the area of PVC that was subject to scuffs, it was decided to glue one more strip of a halt 6 cm wide on each side of the existing one. I found a reinforcement for the bottom of the boat in one of the fishing stores, bought polyurethane glue for PVC for it, pumped up the boat at home and began the process of strengthening the bottom.

In the photo below, one strip of the fender has already been glued, and then I will give a step-by-step report of gluing the second strip.

The first thing to do is to evenly, almost back to back, attach the purchased strip of bottom protection to the already glued factory one. At the same time, it is necessary to make marks on the PVC with a pen from the other edge along the entire length of the strip. I made a dotted line with a distance of about 30 cm.

After marking and cutting the tape of the desired length, we proceed to degreasing the surfaces. Thoroughly wipe the glued materials with a solvent.

According to the marks that were drawn on the boat, you need to stick masking tape. This is necessary in order not to smear excess glue and not stain the PVC.

I could not find glue in a normal container, so I used this one.

One bottle contains 70 grams. It took me 6 such bubbles for seven meters of the fender.

We take a suitable container, pour a couple of bubbles of glue there and with a paint brush we coat the tape first, then the bottom of the boat. We smoke for 10-15 minutes, then add glue to the container again, coat the bottom of the boat, but do not touch the halt. Let the glue dry a little (about 5 minutes), remove the masking tape and start gluing the tape.

Gently apply the bottom reinforcement to the already glued one, leaving a gap between them of about a millimeter. We press everything well, smooth it with the palm of our hand. The halt fits snugly, following the contours of the bottom of the boat and sticks clearly.

As soon as the entire tape is laid, we roll it along the entire length with a small wallpaper roller, and then a hairdryer and a wooden spatula will be used.

We gradually warm up the bottom reinforcement and the very bottom of the boat, at the same time, with good effort, pushing through the hollows on the tape. Particular attention should be paid to the edges and joints of the halt, the beginning and end, as well as the points of refraction. So, meter by meter, we activate the polyurethane adhesive and increase the adhesion of the glued materials.

The gap between the tapes is necessary so that excess glue, if any, comes out from under the fender tape.

That's it. The issue price is about one and a half thousand rubles and a couple of hours of time spent. This, compared with the ability to break through the bottom on the keel itself, is a complete trifle. By the way, if you order a tape through the site, it costs exactly half as much as in a store.

Save money and not a stone or a log on the ponds!
