For a more uniform sowing of seeds, a seeder is used, which can later be used to apply fertilizer to the soil. The size of the seed holes is determined by the seed variety. The seeder during operation must move in such a way that the old and new seed strips intersect to avoid voids between them.

Water the crops in the evening, with soft sprinkling, so that the seeds do not wash out, abundantly, so that moisture penetrates the ground to a depth of 10 cm, but do not allow the formation of puddles and prolonged stagnation of water. In dry, hot weather, hopes of rain can turn into death of seeds if you leave crops without watering for several days. At the same time, the seeds will swell and hatch, and then dry up before they germinate.

Second class - landscape gardening lawns.

A leveled, weed-free area must be lightly tamped. This is necessary to make it easier for sprouted lawn roots to absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil.

If the soil, watering and climatic conditions do not suit the plant, it will not grow on your lawn, no matter how much you would like it.

At the same time, the external signs of the plants that make up the lawn mixture should be selected in such a way as to obtain a sufficiently uniform, even and beautiful coating. Here it is necessary to take into account the growth rate, and the width of the leaves, and the height of the plants, and the color of the foliage. In addition, of course, all selected plants must correspond to the soil-climatic zone of cultivation.

But planting a lawn in front of the house is not enough, you need to know not only how to properly grow a lawn, but also how to care for it.

To give the lawn a visual volume, flower arrangements will help, which look much more interesting under a slight slope. In addition, during rains and irrigation, the water will drain naturally, without lingering and without soaking the root system of the grass.

Greetings, dear friends!

My expression “the lawn will dry up” should be understood as it is ventilated from above, and the earth is moist inside. The first haircut in the spring is very important, after mowing the lawn, be sure to roll it up! , you need to find out what kind of soil is in that part of the garden where we will arrange the lawn. This will allow you to determine what and how much to add to it so that the lawn grows well. And only then should you choose the seeds.

Shoots appear on the 7-21st day after sowing, depending on weather conditions. On average, it takes 2 weeks for seeds to germinate. They must be decorative, perennial, shade-tolerant, resistant to mechanical damage, and also drought-resistant under certain conditions. In this case, grasses must be selected with a strong turf and various types of tillering. Scatter the seeds over the surface of the site. This can be done manually or with a mechanical seeder. With manual sowing, it is important to try to evenly distribute the seeds. Seed consumption should not be less than indicated on the package. Otherwise, you will have to wait a long time for thick grass.

Now many companies offer a choice of any seeds: under different names and with different compositions. There are sets of seeds where wild flowers, small or large, will grow along with green grass on the lawn. Lawns with such grass do not need mowing, all their beauty is in meadow greenery and constant flowering of grasses.

Popular lawn grasses that are part of most herbal mixtures: meadow bluegrass, thin bent (shooting), various fescue (sheep, red, cane), perennial ryegrass. They are resistant to adverse climatic conditions, including high winter hardiness; well resist diseases and pests; undemanding, but at the same time they grow quickly and develop well.

You need to feed the lawn twice a year: in spring and autumn. It requires the use of both synthetic and organic fertilizers. Also, in no case is it recommended to mix these types of fertilizer.

How to grow a beautiful lawn? Definitely, any of them will be beautiful, but everything else must meet your requirements. Will the lawn serve a purely decorative function or are you planning to use it as a place to relax.

Choosing and preparing a site for growing a lawn

In our retail, you have to select the lawn mixture with your personal presence, carefully reading the composition of the grass on the package, since under the guise of "Gnome" or "Park", each manufacturer packs its own composition of seeds. A more accurate match with the name of lawns and quality is offered by English and Dutch farmers, packages of which can be purchased at hypermarkets and garden centers. About that

The whole season the lawn is necessary

It would be nice to get some detailed book on this subject - for example, "All About the Lawn" by Dr. Hession, it will come in handy in the future.

At the same time, fertilizers must be applied to the soil along with the seeds. They must contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. In order for the sowing of seeds to be uniform, it is recommended to sow half of the seeds along and the other half across the lawn.

Choosing the type of lawn

In the middle of the 20th century, there was a revolution in the science of lawns: special varieties of grasses were bred, highly effective pesticides were created to control pests and pathogens, complex mineral fertilizers began to be used for lawn grass stands, and the main processes in caring for grasses were mechanized.

Drainage construction

The most common lawn grass in Russia is creeping bent grass. This is a grass with long shoots up to half a meter, which spread along the ground. The plant grows quickly with timely watering, and recovers when playing on the lawn, making it a favorite grass for children's playgrounds. To quickly create a lawn, rooted shoots are used, which in two months will create a carpet of greenery on which children can play. The shoots of this lawn grass are planted in the spring at a distance of 10 cm from each other. The lawn needs frequent watering.

The sowing itself includes several sequential operations.

How to grow a lawn without weeds? If the grass covers the area with a dense layer, then the weeds simply will not break through. You can also use herbicides:

 1. If the main purpose of the clearing is beauty, then the parterre lawn is an excellent choice. This type of coverage is characterized by a uniform surface of the grass carpet, low herbage and uniform coloring along the entire perimeter of the area. The parterre lawn is not intended for children's games and requires perfect leveling of the surface.
 2. how to plant a lawn
 3. weed
 4. Before you buy seeds, find out when they were grown (the package should be stamped with the date). For sowing, you need to buy 6 kg of seeds per hundred square meters: 5 kg for sowing and 1 kg for lawn repairs for the next year. Between the time of growing seeds and their sowing should be no more than two years! Do not open the package out of curiosity before sowing, because. Seed germination depends on humidity, and it, in turn, on the tightness of the package.

Sowing seeds, how to do it right

 • At the end of the lawn, seeds and fertilizers must be carefully planted into the soil. With light soil, to improve the contact of seeds and soil, it can simply be lightly rolled. Ideally, the seeds should be deepened into the ground at a distance of about 2 mm.

 • . They are created by improving the existing herbage, surface treatment of the turf and overseeding the appropriate grass mixtures.
 • After sowing, it is necessary to compact the soil with seeds. You can do this with the help of a roller. You can also use a regular board and your own weight for this purpose.

There are other lawn grasses.

Lawn planting technology

Used before spring lawn germination (once a year);

will be discussed today.

. I especially want to dwell on two plants - clover and daisy. Clover and garden lawn are incompatible things. You will not succeed in arranging a cheerful piece of pink clover on the playground and a garden and park lawn in front of the house on the same site, because. clover "dusts" and will soon appear as an uninvited guest in front of your house. If a joyful white-pink daisy has appeared on the lawn, immediately grab a shovel and dig it up by the roots, otherwise this “joy” will quickly go all over the lawn. I do not like all kinds of herbicides and do not use them.

Plot

Lawn soil requires constant watering, especially for the first shoots to appear. Watering is done every day for about 10 minutes. To make it even, special nozzles are used. From the moment the seeds are planted to the moment the first shoots appear, it takes from one to three weeks. High quality seeds usually take longer to germinate.

In the first year, do not give the lawn a big load, try to walk on it as little as possible. Try to protect it from pets, especially dogs.

Lawns have been known for over 3,000 years. We find the first mention of grass-sowing in the Bible - both in the old and in the new Testament. In Persia, so-called grass carpets were created in gardens before the new era. Hundreds of years before the new era, one of the first lawns was created in the Chinese imperial park Cheu.

Lawn Care Rules

The last stage of planting is abundant watering. Before the grass sprouts, the plot must be watered as the earth dries.

For the first two years, meadow bluegrass needs careful care, then it itself begins to grow actively, crowding out weeds.

It is not difficult, but it requires precision and accuracy. To get started, get your supplies ready. You will need two boards, or wide (hunting) skis - this way you will avoid marks on the ground. To achieve an even distribution of seeds, use a special seeder if possible. You will also need a manual roller, with which the seeds are pressed into the soil, and irrigation devices.

 • Applied when weeds have already sprouted (suitable for getting rid of dandelion, chickweed, couch grass, fescue and bluegrass).
 • If we talk about how to grow a lawn that would serve for many years, then you can’t do without the construction of a drainage system.

Landing a lawn requires preliminary preparation, consisting of several works. First of all, they prepare the site for sowing in advance - this should be done in the fall. The allotted plot of land should be dug up without breaking the breasts and left for the winter so that the soil is more crumbly and saturated with moisture (see the article “Autumn digging of the soil”). If there was no opportunity to prepare the soil in advance, then after digging it is necessary to wait a few days for the soil to settle, helping it to reach the desired consistency with daily watering.

Mineral

We leveled, prepared the soil, now it needs to be compacted - either with the back of a rake (if the area is small), or with a 100 kg roller. Then water and leave for 3-4 weeks. All this time, periodically watering the ground, we correct irregularities (we pour a mixture of earth and sand into the pits), weeds that appear in the field and select the time for planting the lawn.

Lawn mowing

 • To content
 • Planting the lawn in parts or sectors is not worth it. After seed germination, a gap is formed at the junction of sectors, which will not overgrow for a very long time. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare and plant the entire site at once.
 • Bluegrass meadow is a capricious grass that requires careful lawn care in the first two years: weeding and watering is necessary. But then she herself begins to actively grow and crowd out all the weeds. Prefers light sandy loam and loose loam. This grass is best sown in August on a prepared lawn, thoroughly cleaned of roots.

To determine the consumption of seeds, a number of conditions should be taken into account. Firstly, this is the season: when planting seeds in the autumn, they take half as much as when planting in the spring. This allows you to achieve the formation of larger and stronger plants, better prepared for the winter cold. Secondly, about a pound of seeds per hundred square meters will be required in the future for overseeding; this stock needs to be taken care of right away. Grass seeds remain viable for a long time, and to get a really beautiful lawn, you will need more than one year. Seeding rates, therefore, can vary significantly: from 25 to 50 g of seeds per square meter of future lawn area.

You need to mow the grass as often as possible and only with well-sharpened blades. Frequent mowing will make the grass thicker, which will prevent weeds from germinating.

After the site is selected, it is necessary to start building drainage. This stage is especially important if the site is located in low places with high humidity. Of course, a drainage cushion is not a mandatory component, but it will not be superfluous.

The second stage of preparation is loosening the soil layer with the simultaneous introduction of nutrition, designed for the next 3 years of lawn life. The site is plowed to a depth of no more than 40 cm and the loosened soil is fertilized with vegetable compost mixed with azophos or superphosphate with a total layer of 15 cm. The composition of the compost is made from long-decomposing organic matter, mixing animal waste with straw, branches, bark, wood chips and newsprint . top dressing The day for planting should be calm, without rain, and the ground should be moist inside and weathered at the top so that it does not stick to the legs and the rink. It is best to prepare the lawn area in the fall and sow in the spring. Later on August 20-25, it is undesirable to plant a lawn, since in autumn the grass grows 3-4 times slower. Selected landing day

When to sow the lawn

The entire period of grass growth, the lawn is carefully looked after - watered, mowed, fertilized.

not only maintains its appearance, but is also an excellent weed control agent. Most of them do not tolerate haircuts, and after two or three such procedures, you will say goodbye to them forever. Mowing also helps plants to grow on the surface of the soil, forming additional shoots, creating a dense sod, growing with rhizomes.

First of all, garbage is carefully removed from the site (stones, bricks, slabs, boards and chips, foil, plastic bottles, bags, film). Never bury rubbish in the ground. This will create unfavorable conditions for the growth and development of grasses. Plants in the places of such burial grounds will lag behind in growth, overwinter poorly, get sick.

What to sow

As practice shows, tamping seeds and earth, as described above, does not give good enough results. Since some of the seeds manage to be eaten by birds, and some simply do not sprout. To avoid this, sprinkle the seeds with earth. Meadow fescue is a grass with coarse leaves and a short stem. Does not twitch very well, forms bunches of greenery. With 100% use of this grass, the lawn is obtained with bald spots. He likes rich loams. Before planting, mineral fertilizers with a high nitrogen content can be added to the soil. For a hundred square meters, you will need up to one and a half kilograms of fertilizer. It is also good to prepare peat or humus in advance for use as a mulching material; its quantity is determined in such a way that the lawn area is covered with a layer of mulch about 0.5 cm thick.

How short should the lawn be cut? This will depend on the type of grass that the clearing is planted with. The main rule is to cut off no more than 1/3 of the total height. If the grass has overgrown, then it is necessary to mow and bring its height to the desired level in two or three steps. Never mow a wet lawn.

The drainage structure looks like this:

The next step is to level the area with a rake, remove weeds, debris and stones. With poor-quality performance of these works, lawn care will be difficult, the likely occurrence of "bald patches" and visible differences in the height of the green mass.

How to sow a lawn

should be applied systematically due to their rapid consumption by the root system of grasses. From spring and in the first half of summer - 1 time in 2-3 weeks Kemir of Finnish production. From the second half of summer, feed twice with chlorine-free phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. Last top dressing on August 10-15 with Kemira. You can only feed when the ground is wet! lunar calendar So, after the lawn grass has risen, it needs care. It consists of watering, cutting and fertilizing. If you follow the rules for lawn care, it will be magnificent and will become the hallmark of the owner of the suburban area.

It should also be taken into account that each mowing is a big stress for plants. It is easier for them to recover if no more than 1/3 of the stem is cut at a time, no matter how high it is.

The soil for the lawn should be sufficiently moisture-absorbing so that the plants do not experience a lack of moisture. At the same time, water should not accumulate on it, as this leads to the loss of plants.

A proven planting method that gives excellent results, but is more time consuming is the following:

Red fescue forms a dense turf only in the second year, but does not require watering, tolerates drought and shading. Loves fertile light soils.

If you are sowing by hand, divide the seeds into two equal parts and sow in two steps, in two mutually perpendicular directions. Slightly thicker sow the grass along the edge of the site and along the paths. Seeds must first be mixed with sand or soil; 1 - 3 parts of sand are taken for one part of the seeds.

After mowing, there is no need to remove the cut grass. These particles are easily absorbed by the soil, which will only benefit the lawn.

The top layer of soil is removed from the cleared site to a depth of 40 ... 45 cm.

After completing the preparation, you can start sowing the lawn. They choose a lawn in accordance with the weather conditions of their region, as well as the purpose of the future lawn - for games, recreation, a lawn, a simple carpet for greenery, a flower meadow, or in the English manner.

Watering. Firstly, after each haircut, and secondly, as needed, depending on the weather. You must remember that the earth must be moist so that the roots do not dry out.

First condition: preparatory work

gardener. What do you need to have for this day? Seeds, seeder, rakes, buckets, roller, lutrasil, staples, shovels, wheelbarrows, sifted garden soil. Decide in advance which direction you will be planting. Mix the seeds well in the bag and do this periodically, pour into the planter (the planter must be pre-adjusted) and sow a strip with a width slightly larger than the width of the roller. In a small area, the lawn can be sown by hand with the "sower's movement". Lightly fill this strip with prepared earth with a layer of approximately 1.5-1 cm and roll it with a roller. Approximately a meter of lawn along the paths and the blind area should be sown 2 times thicker: these places, firstly, are trampled down the most, and in winter, snow is dumped here. Close the sown area with lutrasil and pin it with studs 15-20 cm long. Overlap the lutrasil and fix it with studs after 1-1.5 m. Less often it is bad - the wind will raise the shelter. What is it for? Firstly, so that the birds do not peck at the seeds, secondly, so that heavy rain does not knock out and wash them away (after all, it is very important that they are evenly distributed over the surface!), Thirdly, so that pets cannot harm the future lawn . After everything is closed, pour water from above through sprayers. You can’t water the lawn with chlorinated water!

The first rule is to prepare the site. By applying the right fertilizers and digging the site to the appropriate depth - approximately 20 cm, soil fertility can be achieved.

The first mowing is usually carried out when the soil and grass are dry and the latter reach a height of 10 cm. For the first time, the very tips of the grass are cut, no more than 1 cm. Lawn mower knives must be sharp. During subsequent haircuts, the knives are gradually lowered lower and lower.

Drainage

After the ground on the site has been prepared, about 1 cm of soil should be removed and poured into an area where grass is not planted.

The second condition: watering, in which your lawn will be thick and beautiful

Perennial ryegrass - a temporary lawn for one year. This is a moisture-loving plant that freezes during cold winters. Requires shelter for the winter. Does not tolerate even spring frosts. Open it after the threat of frost has completely passed. The best soil for planting it is well-drained loam. The plant quickly sprouts and in two weeks completely covers the lawn with young shoots. Requires regular fertilizing with complex fertilizers and watering. In the second year, grass reseeding is necessary. Seed consumption - 14-15 g per 1 sq. m.

The weather for landing must be calm. Having distributed the seeds over the surface of the soil, they are shallowly covered with a rake, and then the entire territory is evenly rolled with a roller, increasing the area of contact of the seeds with the ground. This procedure allows you to accelerate the emergence of seedlings by 2 to 4 days and stimulates the growth of herbs.

Third condition: land without weeds

The main mistake is too frequent watering. This causes the grass to grow too actively, since the root system remains almost at the surface of the soil. That is why artificially created clearings are watered rarely, but always plentifully.

A layer of broken brick, crushed stone or gravel is laid out at the bottom.

1 year

Fourth condition: planting high-quality and properly selected seeds for the area

We water the lawn depending on the weather and the soil: if it’s hot, then every day; if sandy soil - 2 times a day. It is necessary to water either before 10 o'clock in the morning, or after 18 o'clock, it is better not to water during the day - more harm than good. The soil should be moist to a depth of 8-10 cm, and watering must be uniform. (Put the jar where you water - it should contain 10 cm of water).

England is traditionally considered the birthplace of lawns. But there is a completely different climate. Therefore, it is best to use domestic seeds of different varieties. This needs to be done so that they kind of insure each other. If one variety falls out of the herbage, the other will gain strength. The most common mixtures are meadow and red fescue, perennial ryegrass, common bluegrass and meadow grass, and others. By applying different ratios of grasses in mixtures, it is possible to obtain lawns of various types. For example, a sports lawn is resistant to trampling, the front lawn has beautiful emerald dense grass.

The density of the grass, its resistance to trampling largely depends on the root system of plants. The more often we mow the lawn and the more we walk on it, the worse the grasses take root, the mass of the roots decreases. To save and restore the root system, give the grass rest periods. This is possible if the ground part grows to a height of 12–15 cm.

Mandatory in those areas where water stagnates after snowmelt, rain, watering. Arrange it as follows.

Back to index

After that, the site is mulched with humus or peat, protecting seedlings from rapid evaporation of moisture and exposure to ultraviolet rays. If the soil on the site is heavy, sand is added to the mulch mixture. It is important that the material used for mulching does not contain weed seeds.

To determine that the lawn needs watering, you can by the following signs:

The next layer is sand (at least 10 cm). It must be carefully tamped.

To properly plant a lawn, you need to know how much seed you need to take on a certain area of the site. To calculate the mass of seeds sufficient for sowing a flat area, they are guided by the following data: per sq. meter is used 25 gr. seed material. For sowing slopes, you need to use a denser sowing.

We have already talked about the first and second haircuts. The third and subsequent haircuts - we cut 1/3 of the height of the lawn. It should grow no higher than 9-10 cm, i.e. after mowing, the height of the lawn should be 6 cm.

Fifth condition: compliance with sowing technology

The most dangerous time for the lawn is the fifth or seventh day after sowing: the seeds were dry, they were watered - they absorbed moisture, swollen, and if there is no watering at this time, they will dry out.

The entire season, the lawn must be carefully looked after: mowed, watered and fertilized.

Next time we will tell you how to protect the lawn in the country from diseases.

Sixth condition: timely top dressing

Remove the fertile layer. A layer of gravel (10–15 cm) is laid on the infertile subsoil and compacted. Then a layer of sand (10 cm) is poured and also compacted. Fertile soil (10–15 cm) is sprinkled on top, rolling it with a roller weighing at least 100 kg. The skating rink can be replaced with a barrel by pouring water into it.

On top of the planted seeds, previously removed soil should be poured. Then carefully tamp it down.

Do-it-yourself lawn in the country: soil preparation, planting, care, practical advice

The lawn should be sown in the spring when positive daytime temperatures set in.

Preparing the soil for planting a lawn

One of the most important and crucial stages is watering. Watering is carried out by soft sprinkling, achieving a uniform distribution of moisture in the soil to a depth of at least 10 centimeters. Make sure that water does not stagnate on the surface of the site.

If you stick a screwdriver into the ground, it will enter with little resistance;

 • Next, a layer of fertile soil is laid on a layer of sand. The minimum thickness is 15 cm. If it is planned to break the ground lawn, then the layer of earth should reach 30 cm.
 • You need to sow manually, trying to scatter the seeds evenly throughout the plot.
2 years old

Seedlings may appear on the fifth - seventh day. When you see friendly shoots, lutrasil can be carefully removed. Before the first

This is the golden rule of lawn care. Top dressing is best done with liquid fertilizers, such as mullein. The lawn needs not only to be fed, but also to ensure its breathing, that is, “comb out” the old grass with a rake and aerate the soil by piercing it with a pitchfork. These two operations are combined in a lawn mower equipped with a perforator-aerator.

Modern landscape design is impossible without a beautiful lawn in the form of a beautiful emerald carpet. It serves as a magnificent backdrop for flowerbeds and shrubs, harmoniously uniting the zones of the site into a single whole.

On heavy clay soils, before digging, from 10 to 15 kg / m2 of sand is added and, while digging, mix it with the soil. On light sandy soils add 4–5 kg/m2 of peat.

Lawn planting

This approach will protect the seeds from birds and enable them all to sprout well.

Lawn Planting Procedure

Before planting, the seeds are soaked for a day in warm water, adding potassium permanganate and means to stimulate seed growth. A day later, the seeds are thrown into gauze, the water is decanted to the state of flowability of the seeds, and as soon as they begin to crumble, they begin planting. It is necessary to sow the lawn in the spring, when positive daytime temperatures come, from about April 10 to 15. During sowing, they check the soil for moisture by squeezing a lump of earth in their hands. If the soil sticks together, then the earth is sufficiently moistened and the seeds thrown into the ground will not dry out. We plant grass in squares, m by m, while marking with pegs. Seeds are sown arbitrarily, first running a hand along the beds, then across. Seeds can be sprinkled with sand, black earth, but you can leave it like that, you just need to pat with a shovel and press them into the ground. You can use a special roller, but if it is not there, then slamming with a shovel also presses the grass seeds quite tightly to the soil.

Water the lawn in the evening; until germination, this procedure must be performed daily. If you sow the lawn in the summer, in dry and hot weather, you will have to water twice a day. Autumn sowing can save you this hassle: frequent rains will ensure a sufficient level of soil moisture. On average, lawn grass seeds germinate within two weeks, but this period can be either shortened or extended, depending on the selected grass varieties, temperature conditions and humidity.

The grass begins to take on a bluish tint;

Prepare a couple of wide boards on which you will walk around the site so as not to leave marks;

The area sown with lawn is treated with a rake, leveling the entire landing, after which the soil is compacted with a special roller. If there is no such tool, you can use ordinary heavy wide boards, which are alternately laid on the surface of the site, trampling them with your feet.

We follow the same rules.

A well-groomed lawn adorns any suburban area.

 • Digging the soil
 • Approximately two weeks after planting, the first shoots will appear, and in a month there will be a young lawn.

The height of seedlings should be no higher than 10 cm. If weeds appear, then they must be weeded before cutting. It is necessary to weed while standing on plywood and very carefully so as not to damage the young tender shoots. Planting a lawn is an important step in arranging the interior of a suburban area.

- one of the most necessary and difficult activities in preparation for sowing. The time for digging the site is dictated by the weather: the soil should be slightly moist, not dry. When trampling down, do not let go of the rake: level the ground, collect stones, roots, debris. In addition, it is advisable to walk on the ground with an ice rink.

Do-it-yourself lawn: site preparation

However, along with lawn grass, weeds will also sprout. Weeds must be removed. A month after planting, the earth is still soft and loose, so the weeds are well removed along with the root.

Be sure to weed the lawn, preventing weed seeds from ripening. For example, quinoa retains its germination capacity for a long time. She will sprout on the lawn for a long time if she is allowed to sow the lawn. The main thing when creating a lawn is the correct ratio of soil. Never water your lawn at night. Grass should never go wet into the night. Before turning on watering, make sure that the grass has time to dry before the evening. Excess moisture contributes to the development of various diseases.

Before planting a lawn, you need to determine its purpose and configuration. This is influenced by the routes along which people are supposed to move around the garden. Usually the shape of the lawn is rectangular or square. But its correct shape can sometimes look a bit boring, so an irregularly shaped lawn will look very original. It should not be forgotten that a too complex lawn shape with sharp corners and all kinds of bends requires more careful, sometimes very difficult care.

After digging, compacting and leveling, it is recommended to keep the area under fallow and for several (4–6 or more) weeks to destroy weeds, dormant seeds or pieces of rhizomes that will gradually germinate. To stimulate the germination of weeds, the site is watered immediately after leveling. These procedures take a lot of time, but very effectively clear the site of weeds.

After a while, the lawn grass will grow and will try to produce seeds. In the first year of lawn growth, it is not advisable to allow insemination. It is important that the grass is well rooted, so you should mow it.

Lawn grasses, lawn planting and irrigation

A green dense lawn will decorate your summer cottage. A dacha plot planted with lawn grass can be a vacation spot for the whole family. In addition, the lawn will protect the ground and retain moisture in it. Planting and caring for a lawn in the country is not at all difficult. If you follow the landing rules, then in a month there will be a result.

To create a green lawn in the country, you need to determine the place. Before starting land work in the country, you need to make a curb of stone, brick or concrete with your own hands. This will make it possible to keep the soil of the lawn from being washed away during floods and heavy rains. You also need to take care of drainage by making a slight slope to drain excess water from the lawn.

Lawns should be watered either early in the morning or early in the evening. Midday watering will not bring any benefit, since the water will evaporate very quickly and will not have time to reach the root system. Seed consumption is determined by a number of conditions:

I will be glad if the article ground cover plants

Grass never leave!

Parterre

It is necessary to remember about the illumination of the lawn. After all, each site, in accordance with the rules for planting lawn grass, should be in the sun for at least some time.

In Europe, lawns appeared after the Crusades. Since the 16th century, they began to arrange lawns for various games. First in the Netherlands - for golf. Then this game (and for her, the lawn!) spread widely in Scotland and England, and later in the USA. At the end of the 19th century, sports lawns appeared in Russia. The first lawn mower was invented by Edwin Budding in 1830 in Great Britain. English landowners can also be considered the pioneers of lawn laying: it was in the first half of the 19th century that the types of grasses that gave the best results when sown were selected.

You can mow the grass with a trimmer or lawn mower. The trimmer is useful for small areas. For large areas, it is better to use a lawn mower. The lawn mower has the advantages it has a grass collector (you don’t have to collect the cut grass), unlike the trimmer, the lawn mower cuts evenly.

There are two problems in preparing the soil for a lawn: leveling the site and removing weeds.

Lawn Care: Mowing

Subject to the entire lawn planting technology and subject to timely watering, the grass will delight with its greenery and require the first haircut two months after sowing. The main thing that a beautiful do-it-yourself lawn needs is the right soil ratio.

When the preparation of the site for the future lawn is completed, it is time to sow. And here it is necessary to find answers to three main questions: when to sow? What to sow? How to sow? In order for the result of painstaking work to create a green lawn to please the eye, it is important not to miss a single essential detail. For autumn, fewer seeds will be required than in spring (about two times). In this case, the planted plants have time to form a strong root system and winter well.

Water the lawn immediately after mowing!

Making a lawn requires the presence of soil of appropriate quality. To do this, you first need to clear the area where the lawn grass will be planted. In order not to take moisture from the lawn, it is necessary to uproot weeds and tree shoots and remove all debris.

The main lawn care is watering. Lawn grass loves moisture. Sprinklers are used to water the lawn. Any type will do. It is important that the area of watering corresponds to the area of the lawn.

Purpose and form

There are two ways to level the area:

For sowing any seeds, a mixture of sand, soddy soil and peat in equal quantities is suitable. Instead of peat, you can take black soil, leaf humus or rotted manure. Soddy land must be sorted out and cleaned of all kinds of roots. After removing the sod from the place of land collection, relatively clean soil remains. All these components should be mixed and laid on the territory prepared, enclosed by a curb, in an even layer of 15-20 cm. The laid ground must be thoroughly spilled with water.

Do-it-yourself lawn planting

Be sure to leave a margin of about 0.5 kilograms. This stock will be needed later, for additional grass overseeding.

help you get a beautiful green carpet on the site. See you!

Preliminary construction work

First there was a field of dandelions. They began to mow every week, and the composition of the grass began to change - weeds that do not like weekly cutting began to disappear, and grasses began to grow. The dandelions did not completely disappear, so the rest had to be dug up. Having made a soil analysis, we carried out liming before winter.

The second haircut is carried out in compliance with the same rules: lawn height 10 cm, cutting 1.5-2 cm, i.e. we pinch so that the root system develops in the first year. Every 2-3 weeks it is recommended to apply mineral fertilizers throughout the growing season. It is advisable to use special fertilizers for lawns.

It is created at the main nodes of the composition, in front of the facade of the building, near fountains, ponds, monuments. Grasses should be low-growing, give a dense herbage, a bright green color. For these purposes, red fescue, common bent grass, meadow bluegrass (100% of only one species) are used. A mono-lawn in this case is the best. If you use a mixture, then you need to trust the company whose seeds you buy. It is undesirable to make the mixture yourself, since the seeds are selected according to many parameters, including the color of the grass. You can’t walk on the parterre lawn.

How to make the land fertile?

For sowing, as a rule, mixtures of herbs are used, and not individual species. A mixture of several (3-5) types of grass adapts and survives on the site more easily under various weather conditions than one type of lawn grass.

The lawn should be watered regularly. It is not permissible to leave the lawn without watering for a long time. In the hot months, watering is necessary 2-3 times a week. If the weather is cool, then 1 time per week is enough.

Tear down the mounds and fill in the holes, then dig the site. This method is good if you have free land, or the land torn from the mounds is enough to fill in the holes.

Requires thorough knowledge and adherence to technology.

The use of dressings

Before planting, mineral fertilizers must be applied to the soil. Make sure they contain a high percentage of nitrogen. Consumption: per hundred square meters - 1.5 kilograms of fertilizer.

The biggest work was leveling the surface - where there were small irregularities, they covered them with earth mixed with sand (see Fig. 3). Where there were large irregularities (see Fig. 4), we cut the sod into squares, pulled it out, put it in the shade, leveled the ground and returned the sod to its place. Then they tamped and watered properly.

The last mowing of the young lawn is September 10-15, the old one is September 15-20. But if in autumn the weather is warm for a long time and the lawn continues to grow, then you can mow later. In a dry autumn, at least once the lawn must be shed well.

Lawn grass care

Garden lawn

The soil under the lawn is leveled, all holes and bumps are removed.

The composition of the mixtures usually includes the following types of herbs: fescue (red, sheep, reed), bent grass (thin, or shoot-bearing), meadow bluegrass, perennial ryegrass. They are unpretentious, have a low growth rate, high winter hardiness and drought resistance, actively resist pathogens, pests and weeds.

We have covered everything you need to know about the lawn, as well as possible planting methods and their features. Planting a lawn in the country with your own hands is within the power of everyone. However, in order for the lawn to always please the eye, it must be regularly looked after.

First, dig the site, and then dismantle it with a rake, thereby leveling the site. This is a rather laborious, but universal way. Strong watering of the lawn will compact the soil. Just do not forget to level the entire area with a rake with long teeth before this. This will help, in case of imperfections in the relief, to eliminate all irregularities and, by adjusting the thickness of the soil, make a slight slope towards the flow of water during irrigation and heavy rains.

Lawn grasses can be sown at almost any time: spring, autumn, and summer sowing is practiced; sometimes the lawn is sown even before the snow melts, right on the ice crust. Therefore, the answer to this question must be found individually; it depends on various factors, including: climatic conditions; type of soil on the site and its condition; the ability to provide sufficient watering.

1LandscapeDesign.ru

The area after planting must be mulched. To do this, you can use either peat or humus. The soil should be covered with a layer of about 0.5 cm.

I welcome you friends on the site advice to gardeners. Many summer residents and just owners of private houses are interested in how to grow a lawn with their own hands. The same should be done if you have a reverse slope (remember, the lawn slope should be from the house!). After two weeks, the lawn must be fed (and before that it must be watered).

Before going into winter (before the last haircut of this season) - comb the lawn, cut the turf, spend. The grass should have a beautiful bright color. These should be shade-tolerant perennial grasses, resistant to trampling, with a well-developed root system. Mixtures of herbs are used for such a lawn: bluegrass (common and forest), fescue (sheep, oriental, bearded), ryegrass (multicolor and annual), wheatgrass (Siberian and comb-shaped) are added to those listed above. Next, the territory of the future lawn needs to be leveled and all depressions and bumps removed. In accordance with the rules for planting a lawn, the site for it should not be perfectly flat. Landscape designers recommend a slight slope towards the center of the lawn in order to allow excess water to run off and prevent it from becoming stagnant. To eliminate excess moisture, the rules for arranging a lawn require the installation of a drainage system.

How many seeds are needed for sowing? However, as with most plants in the country, the basis of care is regular watering. If you do not live in the country permanently, then this becomes a big problem. You can solve it by making an autonomous irrigation system based on a programmable irrigation timer.

Landing site preparation.Back to index

The preparatory stage of creating a lawn

When sowing in autumn, it is important that at least one and a half months remain until the first frost. Optimal weather conditions - cloudy warm weather, regular moderate rainfall. In the middle lane, this is usually the second half of summer - the beginning of autumn. For the central part of Russia, the most favorable dates are August 10 - 25. How to grow a good lawn? To do this, you need to properly land. If you have to sow the grass with your hands, then the following scheme will do: divide the entire volume of seeds into two parts and sow in two approaches. Moreover, the sowing directions should take place in 2 mutually perpendicular directions. Each part must be mixed with sand in a ratio of 1: 3.

How to grow a lawnIn regards to mowing, the same rule must be observed - cut only 1/3 of the height. If you could not mow the lawn in time and it has overgrown, proceed as shown in fig. 5. With regard to watering and top dressing, there are no such strict rules as for a garden lawn: be guided by weather conditions, your desire and the state of the lawn.

Meadow.

When arranging a lawn, you need to constantly fight against the emergence of weeds, which will simply “clog” the ornamental grass, and its appearance will look rather unattractive. To remove weeds, use preparations specially designed for this. At the moment, roundup and raglon are considered the best. But planting lawn grass after the use of these drugs should be carried out only after 2 weeks.

Sow 40-50 g / m2, or 4-5 kg per 1 weave. When buying seeds, keep in mind that in the spring of next year, for overseeding and repairing the lawn, an additional approximately 0.5 to 1 kg of seeds per hundred square meters will be required. When stored for a year, the germination of seeds decreases, but only slightly (by 1–2%). If the land in the chosen place is flat, some kind of grass grows on it, you can just start mowing it regularly - and you will have a green lawn. But if there was a forest on the site of the site, or the land needs to be dug for other reasons, you will have to start planting the lawn in accordance with all the rules. We will tell you how to make a lawn in the country with your own hands, what kind of lawn grass to buy, how often the lawn needs watering and mowing.

Lawn planting

Removing weeds from a lawn planting site is the most difficult, almost impossible task. When planting a lawn industrially proceed as follows. The area is sprayed with a special solution so that all weeds die. After that, 10 cm of the top layer of the earth impregnated with chemistry is torn off. Next, new specially prepared soil is poured, or a rolled lawn is laid. So that there are no weeds, in the fall the ground is covered with spunbond. Summer sowing is not applicable in hot and dry regions: direct sunlight is detrimental to tender seedlings, and even regular watering often does not save the situation. Spring planting is preferable here, and in the case of autumn, preliminary plentiful watering is necessary, which allows the soil to be saturated with moisture to a depth of 50 cm or more.

How to properly water your lawn

After the seeds have been scattered, lightly work them into the soil with a rake. After that, you need to walk the skating rink over the area of the entire site. This will provide the seed with a closer contact with the ground, and also accelerates the germination of seeds by 2-4 days.

And so that the quality of the coating does not differ from professional lawns. There is nothing difficult about this, it is simply necessary to strictly follow the recommendations that have been made.

Mowing the lawn: a few important rules

Before winter, it must be cut, watered and collected all the leaves and debris so that it leaves clean in the winter. In the spring, the lawn needs to be combed out, fed, rolled up if the earth is very swollen, and then ... However, you already know what to do. Then trim and water. This includes legumes - red, pink, white clovers, bird-foot, yellow alfalfa, blue, sowing sainfoin. Such lawns are cut from 1 time per month to 2 times per season, depending on how wet the weather is.

 • Best time to sow a lawn
 • What is a lawn? This is a specially arranged, leveled area, sown with various turf-forming or creeping low-growing plants. Lawns can be sports, decorative and special purpose.
 • If we are talking about planting a lawn in an ordinary country house, then an industrial method of preparing the land is hardly possible. Therefore, we have to resort to another method, which may not be as effective as the industrial one, but accessible to everyone.

If you create a lawn on the native land of a summer cottage, then it is best to prepare the land a year in advance. When early spring comes and the soil allows, you need to start digging up the site so that the roots remain in the sun and the greens go down. Two or three diggings will destroy all vegetation in the dug up area, and rotted roots will give nutrients to the ground. To protect the land from sowing seeds with weeds, at the end of July, a black film is placed on it - spunbond. In the fall, the dug-up area is once again covered with a spunbond, and in this form it waits out the winter. The film will protect it from sowing with foreign seeds.

Lawn - wintering

The final stage of planting is watering. This is where the soft rain effect comes in handy. It is important that moisture does not linger on the surface of the soil, but evenly soaks the deep layers. Water the planted area only in the evenings. Until the first shoots appear, watering is carried out daily. First of all, it is necessary to choose and properly prepare a site for the future lawn. It must be freed from any vegetation: weeds, shrubs and trees growing here.Natural

It is very good to cover the lawn for the winter: powder on top with a layer of 1-2 cm with a mixture (peat + sand + garden soil) and roll.

Let's stop on the garden lawn

The soil under the lawn is fertilized and covered with grass seeds.

- spring (May) or late summer (second half of August), when the soil is warm and there is enough moisture. You can sow throughout the summer, even in the very heat, if you regularly water the plants and protect the crops with covering material (lutrasil, spunbond). Covering materials can protect the lawn from birds and wind.

Sports lawns are created at stadiums, hippodromes and other sports grounds. Special-purpose lawns are needed at airfields, slopes of highways and railways, hydraulic and other structures. Ornamental lawns adorn gardens, parks, boulevards of cities, backyards and summer cottages. Depending on the location and composition of growing herbs, they are divided into the following classes.

Lawn care throughout the year

First you need to dig the area under the lawn. This is advisable if the land has not been dug on the site for a couple of years. If the land is loose, then it is enough to pull out the weeds and proceed to cultivation. When digging, it is important to remove all weeds and root elements. The work is not easy, but it gives a good result. If you want to sow the lawn in the same year, you will have to work hard. You need to dig up the earth with your own hands in small sections, carefully sorting through each lump of earth and choosing the roots. The land ready for sowing must be treated with herbicides (for example, Roundup is well suited for this). Before sowing, complex fertilizers are added, which can also be dissolved in water by watering the ground before planting. According to lawn planting technology, seeds are sown in spring, but there are some types of grasses that can be planted in August. This is meadow bluegrass. Lawn planting

If hot and dry weather persists after planting the lawn, then the area should be watered twice a day. But in autumn, rains will take over the irrigation function. Ideally, the lawn field should have a completely flat surface, but in reality it is impossible to find such a site. That is why the surface of the site needs to be leveled, see how to do it here. ("wild") lawn

In winter, in no case do not pour salt on the paths! In March, scatter the snow piles on the lawn that formed after cleaning the paths and paving. If an ice crust has formed somewhere, then break it, otherwise the lawn has nothing to breathe.

Lawn mowing plan by year.

. It is believed that in our climate the ratio of open and closed space is optimal as 2: 1 (“open” is considered the part of the site planted below eye level), naturally, the lawn also enters this open space. You have to figure out how much area to allocate for it, evaluate the illumination of the place. It is desirable that the lawn be of the same type - either sunny or penumbra. When preparing a site for a lawn, special attention should be paid to the fertility of the earth. If the soil is clayey and heavy, the rational solution is to dig it up and add some sand. To increase fertility, fertilizers and peat must be added to the soil. Fresh manure cannot be used to fertilize the land, as it may contain a large number of weeds or their seeds. When sowing a lawn, it is recommended to use boards, short but wide skis or a sheet of plywood so that there are no footprints on loose soil .First class (highest) - parterre lawns. After digging, it is necessary to process the area with a cultivator. The cultivator will chop up the remains of the roots, which will increase the chances of destroying weeds, and loosen the soil.

Natural (wild) lawn

It is advisable to use a mixture of herbs. This allows you to provide greater resistance to changes in weather conditions than when sowing grass of one type. When compiling the mixture, three to five types of herbaceous plants are taken with different characteristics and preferences. The average germination time is two weeks. The term can be both reduced and increased. Everything will depend on the type of grass chosen, the air temperature and the level of humidity. There is no need to achieve a completely flat surface. The main thing is that obvious potholes and local irregularities are not visible. It’s just great if, as a result of leveling, the site acquires a slight slope.

- this is the one that grows in the garden "by itself", it must be cut for the first few years every week, then - less often, it is thick, beautiful (but not emerald green!), Easy to care for and winters well.

After the snow melts, comb the lawn well. Then, when the grass dries, aeration is necessary - piercing with a pitchfork or special slippers to a depth of 10-15 cm.

Before purchasing

The growth of lawn grass depends not only on the composition of the soil, but also on the quality of the seeds used for sowing. When planting a lawn, a mixture of several varieties of grass is usually used. They have different properties and complement each other. The choice of seeds must be approached with all responsibility. They should match where the lawn is located - in the shade or in the sun, and the composition of the soil. Only using high quality seeds, you can achieve a lawn that will not subsequently require constant mowing. Landscape design experts recommend using seeds that are adapted specifically to our climate, that is, domestic breeders.

Before sowing, the seeds are thoroughly mixed by adding sand or dry earth (1: 1). The mixture is divided into two (or more) equal parts and one part is distributed over the surface of the soil, passing along the site, the other - across. Places along the paths and along the edge of the lawn are sown somewhat thicker. The sown seeds are lightly covered with a rake into the ground - this will protect them from drying out.

They are created in the main parts of the architectural composition of the garden, near fountains, sculptural groups, decorative ponds, etc. The main requirement when designing parterres is that the area of the main background should prevail over the area of flower beds and other details in the composition. If the area of flower beds is equal to the area of the grassy base or prevails over it, an impression is created of fragmentation and variegation, there is no integrity in the perception of the whole picture. The lawn should be planted in such a way that it can be mowed at least 2 times before frost. In other words, it is good to plant a lawn until mid-summer. Creeping bent grass grows rapidly with careful watering, spreads along the ground, thereby creating a carpet of greenery. How to feed tomatoes after planting Do-it-yourself drip irrigation scheme

Watering is one of the most important lawn care items. Proper and timely irrigation will provide a beautiful view, stimulate plant growth and create a favorable climate. With a lack of moisture, the growth process slows down, the lawn grass turns yellow and begins to fade. Lawn watering is necessary in spring, summer and autumn.

How do you know if your lawn needs watering?

With a lack of moisture, the grass itself will demonstrate this to you. It is better to get ahead of drying by the first signs:

 • The grass began to curl up;
 • The lawn began to be trampled down, the grass rises for a long time after being pressed down;
 • When dry, the grass turns brown;
 • The grass withers or turns yellow;
 • Spots appear.

Wilting is most noticeable on old grass. The first to suffer from drought are common bluegrass and white bentgrass. The average requirement for soil moisture in bluegrass meadow, chaff. The least whimsical fescue.

With a lack of water, drought-resistant grasses remain alive. If their leaves and root system dry out, the plants go into dormant mode. When the soil is moistened, they begin to grow again. Despite the fact that the grasses survived, their appearance during drought leaves much to be desired. A yellowed lawn is unlikely to please the eye.

When is the best time to water your lawn?

The most common question is when to water - in the morning or in the evening? Each case has its own peculiarities and subtleties.

Watering is best done in the early morning. In cool, calm weather, water evaporates less and the grass has time to dry before the onset of heat.

Daytime watering is also acceptable, but it should be borne in mind that in the scorching sun, wet grass can get burned: water drops create a lens effect. Moistening the herbage in the heat is called harmful watering, spots appear on the blades of grass. Therefore, cloudy days or the autumn period, when the sun is less hot, are better suited for daytime watering.

Evening watering in the summer is recommended to be done between 16.00 and 18.00. This is due to the fact that the grass must dry out. If the turf stays wet all night, this can adversely affect its condition and lead to fungal diseases.

How often should the lawn be watered?

To accurately answer the question of how many times you need to water the lawn, you need to consider the following factors: soil type, weather and root depth. The weather is the most important factor. In the driest hot summer weather, watering is recommended every day. On average in Russia, in the heat and on sandy soils, the lawn must be watered 2-3 times a week. In autumn and in cool weather, the rate of grass stand moisture is reduced to 1 time in 10 days. The main thing to consider when watering is that the earth between waterings should have time to dry out. This will stimulate the growth of the root system: the roots begin to grow deeper, extracting the remaining moisture. In October, a week before frost, you should stop watering completely.

One of the most difficult questions is how much water is required to water the lawn. For the middle lane, there is an irrigation rate, which ranges from 20 to 40 liters per 1 sq.m of lawn. Watering should be moderate. The formation of puddles and accumulation of water is unacceptable. The frequency of watering is determined by the composition of the soil and weather conditions. For light sandy loamy soils, the frequency of irrigation is once every 3-4 days. For clayey times every 7-10 days. Additional hydration is carried out after shearing, during the period of active growth and when fertilizing with fertilizers. Excessive watering of the lawn leads to the overgrowth of moss and the development of fungal diseases.

If the lawn was made recently, the grass on it has not yet risen, then the soil must be constantly kept moist. Watering in this case is required daily. The soil without vegetation and turf does not retain moisture, the dark surface of the earth heats up, the water quickly evaporates. On average, daily watering should be carried out for about 7-10 days. Further, the frequency of soil moisture is determined by the composition of the soil and the average daily temperature.

Irrigation types

For young grass, or immediately after planting, some water is needed: the root system has not yet formed a layer of turf to absorb and retain moisture. Therefore, you can not water a lot, but often.

Deep plentiful watering should be done in a drought, in the summer.

Incorrect or harmful watering is usually oversaturation of the soil with moisture or moisture on a hot day. In both cases, the grass turns yellow and wilts. Dry watering is best done in the early morning.

Lawn watering products

Everyone chooses the means and methods of watering a green lawn for himself. Depending on the area of the lawn, the complexity of the relief and its forms, the following irrigation options can be considered:

A garden watering can is the easiest way to water your lawn with your own hands. Ideal for watering a small lawn at home. You can’t do without a watering can for moisturizing problem areas, in places where a hose stream doesn’t reach or so as not to wet garden paths once again.

Garden hoses are a simple and versatile way to water. In combination with spray nozzles, it perfectly irrigates the soil, does not wash off the soil and does not damage the root system. You can water the plants without the use of special nozzles, slightly blocking the jet with your finger. Due to the fact that watering is done by hand, the earth will be thoroughly moistened over the entire area. The downside is that you have to spend your time moving the hose with the nozzle across the lawn.

Perforated hoses differ from conventional hoses only in that they have a mass of holes all over their surface. The hose is deployed over the territory of the lawn, and rather large areas are irrigated through the holes.

A sprinkler is a handy device that turns a powerful jet from a hose into rain. The use of such a nozzle does not allow water to destroy the soil surface during irrigation. The disadvantage of the device is a large proportion of water evaporation during irrigation. Small particles of water are blown away by the wind.

The circular sprinkler looks like a fountain during operation. They are usually installed in several pieces, perfect for watering lawns of a small area.

Rotary sprinkler - this device is a sprinkler with the ability to regulate the jet. This irrigation system allows you to adjust the irrigation distance so as not to flood the garden paths or swings.

An oscillating or oscillating sprinkler is designed specifically for watering rectangular and square lawns. The device allows you to adjust the range and degree of watering.

Automatic watering systems are used on large lawns when do-it-yourself watering takes a very long time. The most important aspect is that irrigation systems are installed in front of the lawn. There are two types of sprinklers used in these systems: stationary (or visible) and recessed. Recessed sprinklers appear on the surface of the lawn only during watering.

The automatic irrigation system consists of an underground pipe and hose system, sprinklers, a large capacity water container, pumps, tensiometers, rain sensors and a computer. Tensiometers transmit information about soil moisture to a computer. Rain sensors report no need to water at the programmed time, if there is rain. Such systems are calculated and installed by specialists.

A neat green lawn with lush grass requires regular maintenance, which takes a lot of time and effort. To facilitate this task will help the lawn irrigation system, which can work according to a given program in automatic mode.

The irrigation system is designed for full irrigation of the lawn by sprinkling. Thanks to sprayers, soil moistening occurs evenly, without blurring the upper fertile layer, the roots receive enough moisture, and the grass remains fresh and juicy throughout the season.

The irrigation system includes the following units:

 • sprinklers spraying water;
 • pumping station providing stable pressure in the system;
 • fine filters designed to trap foreign particles;
 • pressure regulators - they are used when installing various types of sprinklers to equalize the water pressure;
 • solenoid valves that turn on and off the water supply to individual groups of sprinklers;
 • HDPE pipes connecting the elements of the system;
 • controllers that control the entire system according to a given program.

Sprinklers (sprinklers) are devices that spray water flowing through pipes in the form of small drops. In non-working condition, they are almost invisible on the surface of the lawn. When water is supplied, the sprinklers move up.

Sprinklers are:

 • static having a strictly defined direction and angle of spraying;
 • rotary, with a jet of water rotating due to an internal turbine;
 • impulse, in which the water jet is rotated by a built-in ratchet mechanism.

Static sprinklers are installed where a precise spray angle is required (usually along lawn edges, along buildings, fences, and paths). Rotary and impulse sprinklers have a certain spray radius, they are mounted in the center of the lawn in such a way that there are no unwatered areas.

Underground garden sprinkler

For uniform irrigation of the entire surface of the lawn, sprinklers with different spray radius are used. They are connected through individual pressure regulators.

The pumping station is installed at a water source - a water supply system, a well or a well. The power and throughput of the pumping station is selected based on the size of the lawn and the required irrigation volumes. The pumping station must be equipped with a fine filter to avoid sand, rust and other small impurities from entering the system.

With a large area of the site, it is advisable to divide the sprinklers into separate groups, which are switched on in turn. In this way, the required power of pumping equipment can be reduced and purchase costs can be reduced. The inclusion of sprinkler groups in this case is carried out using solenoid valves controlled by the controller.

The controller and the control unit are placed in a convenient place, connected to the electrical network and powered from it by the pumping station and solenoid valves. Control cables are laid hidden (underground) in a corrugated metal pipe.

PND plastic pipes and connecting threaded fittings are used as pipelines.

They are assembled quickly and without the use of complex equipment, resistant to low temperatures, do not rot. The diameter of the pipes is selected based on the required throughput according to the results of the calculation.

When laying pipes at a shallow depth, in a freezing layer of soil, at the end of the system branches, drainage wells and drain valves are equipped to drain the system and preserve it for the winter. Access to drainage wells should be easy and convenient.

The system can also be connected to trunk irrigation for trees / shrubs and drip irrigation for flower beds and flower beds. Such irrigation is connected through a reducer that lowers the water pressure. To exclude the operation of the irrigation system in inclement weather, a rain sensor is included in the circuit - it is installed in an open area and connected to the controller.

Note! The choice of components and assemblies for the irrigation system is carried out only after the calculation and preparation of the sketch.

Irrigation system design and sketch

To start designing, you need an accurate site plan indicating the dimensions and objects located on it. On the plan, you need to indicate paths, recreation areas, buildings that should not fall into the irrigation area. With combined automatic irrigation, it is necessary to designate large trees, bushes and flower beds, to which root watering is brought.

The project can be divided into stages.

Step 1. Watering zones. If the lawn is divided by paths or a recreation area, the total area must be divided into separate sections. Water jets during irrigation should not cross their (sections) boundaries.

Step 2. Throughput and pipe diameter. At this stage, it is necessary to determine the maximum and optimal throughput of all pipeline branches. First, find out the diameter of the supply pipe at the point of connection to the water supply and pumping station. Table 1 can be used to determine throughput.

Table 1. Capacity of HDPE pipes depending on their diameter.

Pipe outer diameter, mmWater consumption, l/min.Water consumption m3/h
20 15 0,9
25 30 1,8
32 50 3,0
40 80 4,8
50 120 7,2
63 190 11,4

If the lawn is divided into sections, branching is done according to the collector scheme - this will ensure equal pressure on all pipeline branches. The diameter of the main pipe to the collector should not be greater than the diameter of the supply pipe, the diameter of the branches - less than the main one.

Step 3. Selecting the number of sprinklers. First you need to determine the location of installation of static sprinklers with a limited irrigation angle. They are installed at the corners of the lawn and along paths and objects, directing the spray pattern onto the lawn. It is convenient to mark the irrigation zone on the plan with the help of a compass.

Sprinklers with radial irrigation, static or rotating, are then distributed in the center of the plot. The irrigation zone of each sprinkler is outlined with a compass on the plan. In this case, sprinklers with different irrigation radius can be used.

Step 4. Select sprinklers. According to the sketch, suitable sprinklers are selected, taking into account the radius and angle of irrigation, the diameter of the thread. In this case, an error of 10-15% should be taken into account and sprinklers should be selected with a margin.

Step 5. Place of installation of EM valves and controllers. A separate solenoid valve must be installed for each separately turned on irrigation branch. If possible, they are installed in one place, this ensures ease of maintenance. The control controllers are located in a secure location, but at the same time, care should be taken to ensure easy access for control and programming.

Mark the position of EM valves and controllers on the plan.
1. Controller at the entrance to the house.
2. Solenoid valve block.
3. Pumping station.

Step 6. Location of pipelines. Pipe laying lines are marked on the plan, choosing the minimum length and number of turns. Branches are grouped whenever possible. The pipe diameter is matched to the sprinkler thread diameter. Mark pipes and necessary fittings on the plan.

Step 7. Selecting the performance of pumping equipment. When installing a pumping station, it is necessary to coordinate its performance with the flow of water for irrigation. The total water flow of all simultaneously operating sprinklers is determined, possible losses, which can reach 20%, are taken into account, and a pumping station is selected.

Step 8. Drainage wells. They are installed at the lowest points of the site. One or more branches of the pipeline are brought into the wells. The location of drainage wells should be chosen so that they are not conspicuous, but are easy to maintain. In the figure, the position of the wells is indicated in blue.

Step 8. Accessories. Filters and valves are selected according to the parameters of the pipeline, and the place of their installation is marked on the plan. They also design the installation of rain and soil moisture sensors.

For ease of reading the drawing, the irrigation zone can be highlighted in different colors, as well as indicate the designation of elements with conventional signs.

Note! For convenience, along with the plan, a specification is drawn up, into which the number and characteristics of the selected elements are entered.

Do-it-yourself lawn irrigation system installation

For self-installation of the irrigation system, skills in electrical and plumbing work are required. In their absence, it is better to contact specialists. Step-by-step instructions for installing and connecting an automatic lawn irrigation system are given below.

Step 1. Marking the lawn. With the help of special ecological paint or chalk dumping, the location of the pipeline, installation of equipment and drainage wells is marked according to the sketch. If the system is installed before laying the lawn, the marking can be done using pegs and twine or signal tape.

Step 2. Preparation of trenches for the pipeline. Dig trenches of the required depth according to the markings. For a non-draining system, pipes are laid below the level of soil freezing - at a depth of at least 1 m. For a system with the possibility of draining, a depth of 30-40 cm is sufficient, while observing a slope of 1-3 degrees and equipping each branch with a drainage well with a depth of at least 1 m, diameter - 0.3-0.4 m.

If the system is being installed on an existing lawn, before excavation, the sod is carefully cut in layers or rolls and set aside on a separate site. Rolls or sheets must be moistened regularly. The soil from the trenches is removed in layers with a shovel and set aside (on a film) so as not to damage the rest of the lawn surface.

Step 3. Connecting the pipeline. Pipes of the selected diameter are laid out along the dug trenches. With temperature fluctuations, the linear dimensions of HDPE pipes change, so laying is done without interference with a margin of 5-10% - this must be taken into account when cutting. Connect the pipeline segments using fittings according to the sketch. Carefully lay the pipeline on the bottom of the trench, observing the slope. To fix the pipeline, it is lightly sprinkled with soil at certain points.

Step 4 Equipment for drainage wells. For wells, special containers or a pipe with a diameter of 0.3-0.4 m and a length of 1 m are used. It is dug in vertically, the bottom is covered with rubble by 20-40 cm. The pipes are led into the well and closed with a shut-off valve. The top of the well is equipped with a lid.

Step 5. Mounting the manifold assembly and solenoid valves. Pipeline branches are connected through solenoid valves to the collector assembly. The valves are installed near the pumping station in a place convenient for maintenance in protective boxes.

The valves are controlled from the controller, it can be installed both in a box and in a place convenient for control (in the second case, it is necessary to provide for laying a cable from the controller to a protective box with EM valves). The cable is laid in the ground in a protective pipe or corrugated metal sleeve.

Step 6. Connecting the pumping station. Pumping equipment is placed at the point of connection to the water supply or well in a protective box, caisson or inside the building. The connection diagram of the pumping station is shown in the figure.

Pumping stations can be equipped with an automatic control system, which prevents the pump from being switched on in the "dry running" mode and controls the operating parameters. The automation unit can be placed directly on the pump housing or in a separate control box. When installing a remote automation unit, it is convenient to combine it in one box with the irrigation system control controller.

Step 7. Connecting the irrigation system. Branches of the irrigation system are connected to solenoid valves mounted on the manifold. The main pipeline is connected to the pumping station and the collector through a fine filter.

Step 8. Check and test run the system. Shut off all valves on drainage wells. The pumping station is turned on and the necessary pressure is built up in the accumulator, after which the valve is opened on the main pipe of the irrigation system.

From the control unit, open the solenoid valves in turn on each branch and check all connections for leaks. During the test, water flushes the system from foreign particles that have entered the pipeline during installation.

Note! During trial runs, it is recommended to reduce the pressure from the pumping station to the minimum passport value.

Step 9 Attach sprinklers. Sprinklers are connected to the pipeline according to the sketch, while for static sprinklers it is necessary to observe the direction of spraying. Start the system again and check its performance.

Step 10. Backfilling the system with soil and laying the lawn. The pipelines are carefully covered with previously excavated soil, observing the slope of the pipes, and rammed in layers. Backfilling of the last layer is carried out with fertile soil with the addition of special fertilizers for the lawn. Pre-cut layers of turf are laid in place, watered and pressed. If necessary, sow lawn grass.

Lush vegetation on the lawn and beautiful flowers in the flower beds require constant attention and care. Over time, regular watering turns into a boring duty. Automatic drip irrigation of the lawn can help, which is so simple and understandable in terms of device and installation that you can do it yourself. Is it worth choosing this type of irrigation and how does it differ from sprinkler? Let's figure it out.

Drip irrigation is recommended for irrigation of greenhouse plants, trees and shrubs, flower beds, beds, plantations. It is also suitable for watering lawns if it is not possible to install a sprinkler system (for example, if the lawn is narrow or has a complex curved shape).

The main part of the system is a long hose with holes located along its entire length. Spot irrigation provides an even and constant distribution of water. The system works at a speed that allows water to hit the surface of the soil and soak in a certain period of time. In 2 hours, one drop point of the soil is saturated with water 10-15 cm deep and the same in a radius, provided that the system is adjusted for watering flowers.

Drip irrigation for the lawn is installed in areas where it is not possible to arrange sprinkler irrigation. In this diagram - a narrow section on the right side

Benefits of using a drip system:

 • distortion of the irrigation sector is excluded (unlike sprinklers, which are partially dependent on the direction and strength of the wind);
 • watering of a specific root area of the plant is provided;
 • water does not enter neighboring landscape zones;
 • watering is evenly distributed over the entire area of the site;
 • there is no crust on the soil surface;
 • installation of the system does not require earthworks, takes little time;
 • there is a possibility of feeding plants with mineral fertilizers;
 • saves both water and personal time.

Another indisputable plus is the budget cost of the entire set of equipment. The minimum set, including the main pipe, fittings, droppers, drain pipes, drip tips, a timer, a punch, costs no more than 3,000 rubles. Separately, a water tank and a submersible pump are purchased. Do-it-yourself automatic irrigation system is an opportunity to save on the purchase of expensive equipment.

Users of drip irrigation systems note only two disadvantages:

 • short service life (from 2 to 5 years) - which means that as the parts of the system wear out, it will be necessary to replace them with new ones;
 • the possibility of damage to the dropper (hoses) by rodents or pets.

The minimum set for automatic drip irrigation includes a set of droppers, a timer, fittings, plugs, taps. Submersible pump, if necessary, purchased separately

System Mount Order

The correct automatic watering device depends on the area of the treated area. As an example, let's take the installation of an irrigation system on a lawn 6 meters long. Suppose flowers are planted along the edge of the lawn, the distance between which is 40 cm.

Hardware assembly steps:

 • It is better to start by installing a water intake tank. You can use any suitable barrel or buy a plastic tank from the store.
 • Installation in the tank of a submersible pump. When buying it, you should pay attention to the technical characteristics - the pump power should be enough to irrigate the entire lawn area.
 • Connection to the main pipe pump (a pipe 16 mm in diameter will do). There are two ways to exit the pipe from the tank: through the tank lid, if the pump power allows, or through a specially drilled hole with a diameter of 16 mm in the bottom of the tank. A fitting with a seal is inserted into the hole, and already a pipe is inserted into it. Seal the joint with sealant.
 • Distribution of the main pipe for 3 or 4 droppers using fittings. Droppers are laid to the end of the lawn. Plugs are installed at the end of each hose (or pipe).
 • Layering for separate watering of flower bushes - droppers run along the planting, near the root system.
 • Using a punch, holes are made in the main pipe for droppers (ready-made options for droppers are marked, you just need to select the one you need - for example, 8 l / h or 12 l / h). In droppers under flower bushes, holes are punched near each plant. When using additional tubes, their ends are equipped with drip tips that are stuck near the root system.
 • Setting a timer that regulates the operation of the pump. At a certain moment, he turns on the supply of electricity, starts the pump - and the system operates for a given period of time. For example, you can set the system to turn on at 8:00 and turn off at 8:30. If the dropper has parameters of 2 l / h, during this period each plant will receive 1 liter of water. The timer is electronic, powered by batteries, and mechanical.

As a container for drip irrigation, many use an ordinary barrel, setting it at a certain height

Starting taps connect the main pipe and droppers (hoses)

A timer to adjust the watering time can be purchased with the irrigation system

Operation and maintenance of equipment

In order for our automatic lawn watering to function properly, it must be tested, and at the same time washed. To do this, remove the plugs at the ends of the droppers and turn on the water. Clear water flowing from all hoses is a sign that the system is tight and working properly. Such flushing should be carried out from time to time to prevent clogging of pipes and hoses.

Visual inspection of hoses and pipes will help to eliminate blockages in time. After turning on the system, you should go along each dropper, paying attention to wet spots near the holes. Depending on the adjustment, they should have a diameter of 10 to 40 cm and be the same size. If there is no stain or it is smaller than the others, you will have to clean or replace the dropper. Puddles of water also indicate that the system is not working properly - most likely, the tightness is broken.

The test of the drip irrigation system can be carried out in parts: for this, it is necessary to open the start valves only on certain hoses

The correct operation of droppers is easy to check by the size of wet spots on the soil.

There may be a problem - automatic watering of the site will stop. The reason, most likely, will be a blockage in the dropper.

What types of blockages are there and how to eliminate them?

 1. Mechanical. Pipes and hoses are clogged with suspended particles - sand, silt, undissolved fertilizers. There will be no problem if you use special filters that need to be washed periodically.
 2. Chemical. It occurs due to too hard water. Normal pH values are 5-7, to maintain them they resort to acidic additives recommended for irrigation systems.
 3. Biological. Blockages of this type are associated with the vital activity of organisms, as a result of which plaque, mucus, and algae appear. Light chlorination and regular flushing will rid the equipment of biological contaminants.

In autumn, at the end of the irrigation season, the equipment is washed, dried and dismantled. There should be no water left in pipes and droppers. Electronic and mechanical devices - pumps, timers, controllers, sensors - are best moved to a heated room. Hoses and pipes can be left in the ground for the winter, but their service life will be significantly reduced from this.

Filters for drip irrigation systems are a barrier to mechanical and biological contaminants

If at the end of the season the drip equipment is rinsed and put away for the winter, it will last much longer.

That's all. By arranging automatic watering with your own hands in early spring, you can enjoy a green lawn and lush flower beds all summer without any hassle.

Watering the lawn is one of the prerequisites for its healthy and beautiful appearance, especially in regions with hot, dry summers. If it rains infrequently, and watering is done irregularly, the grass burns out, yellow spots appear on the lawn. To restore the lawn to its former beauty, it will take a lot of time and a large volume of water, since surface wetting will not be enough: water must penetrate into the soil by at least 5-6 centimeters.

How to water correctly? You can, of course, use a hose, but the best solution to save water and time spent on watering is to create an automatic irrigation system. Pipe laying is carried out after preparing the soil for the lawn, before sowing the grass mixture! On an adult lawn, the opening of the turf and its subsequent restoration upon completion of work will be required. A simpler solution in this case would be to organize automatic irrigation using a drip irrigation system, but such a system can only cover a small area.

1. Irrigation system with sprinklers

Installation of an automatic lawn irrigation system equipped with sprinklers involves the performance of work according to a specific plan. First of all, it is necessary to draw up a project: draw a site plan, marking on it the areas that need irrigation. In accordance with the irrigation area and the shape of the lawn, the required number of sprinklers, their type and brand are calculated, and a diagram of their placement is applied to the plan. The next step is to determine the place of connection of the power supply of the system and water intake (water supply, well or well).

The principle of operation of the system is as follows: a pump or pumping station is connected to the water intake point, which supplies water through the filter and electromagnetic caps through the pipeline to the sprinklers. If not enough debit(capacity) points of water intake or pressure water, then the water is first pumped into the storage tank, and from there it is fed into the irrigation system. Water supply pipes are laid in trenches. For automatic control, the system is connected to the controller.

Lawn watering equipment

1. Pump or pumping station.

Via pump or pumping station, water is delivered from the water intake point (well, well, water supply) to the irrigation zone. For the system to work correctly, it is important not to make a mistake with the power of the equipment.

First, let's define the required water consumption for watering the lawn.

The water consumption of one sprinkler per minute is multiplied by the number of sprinklers. For example, 2 l/min * 10 pieces = 20 l/min flow of all sprinklers in the system or 20*60=1200 l per hour = 1.2 cubic meters per hour.

For sprinklers to work water pressure in the system must meet the manufacturer's requirements (this value can be found in the instructions). In this case, the radius of the irrigated sector depends on the pressure value.

For example, the Hunter PGJ-12 rotary sprinkler:

 • recommended range pressure: 1.7 to 3.8 bar;
 • consumption water: 2.2 - 20.5 l / min,

with a minimum irrigation sector, the water consumption per hour of 10 sprinklers will be 2.2 * 10 * 60 = 1320 l / h = 1.3 cubic meters per hour

The instructions for the pump usually indicate its performance (cubic meters / hour) and pressure (in meters). 10 meters is approximately equal to 1 bar.

For example, pumping station Dzhileks Jumbo 50/28 Ch-14:

 • productivity 3 cubic meters per hour
 • head 28 meters = 2.8 bar

It should be borne in mind that when water passes through the pipes, part of the pressure is lost. This loss is approximately 1-1.5 bar per 100 meters.

As a result of the calculation, we found out that the capacity of this pumping station with a margin covers the needs of automatic irrigation from 10 sprinklers. (Note that more powerful hardware costs more.)

If the automatic irrigation system is connected directly to the water supply, it is necessary to measure the water pressure in it using a pressure gauge. Measurements are taken twice - with one faucet turned on, which provides only the irrigation system, and with two or three faucets turned on. Next, we determine the flow of water per minute using a stopwatch and a container with a known volume (for example, a 10-liter bucket).

If water supply will be provided by water from a well, it is necessary to take into account its flow rate (indicated in the well's passport). If there is no well passport, measurements are carried out in the same way as in the case of a water supply system.

We calculate the required daily volume of water, based on the rate of watering the lawn. Lawn watering rate - 10 liters per square meter. meter, respectively:

S (lawn area) sq.m. * 0.01 cubic meters / sq.m. = daily volume of water for irrigation m.cub.

We divide the daily volume by the time of watering (no more than 6 hours). The result obtained should not exceed the maximum flow rate of the well. If the well flow rate is not enough even with an increase in irrigation time, it is necessary to install a storage tank. Capacity should have time to accumulate during the time between watering.

What kind of pump is needed for an automatic lawn watering system?

Centrifugal pumps are considered the most suitable for organizing automatic irrigation. Such pumps are distinguished by ease of operation, the ability to maintain constant pressure for a long time, and reliability.

For proper operation, the pump container must be filled with water before switching on.

The pump can be submersible and surface.

When irrigating from a well or well, micro-pollutions - particles of soil, silt, sand - can enter the system. To avoid clogging of the sprinkler nozzles and prolong their life, it is necessary to install a filter.

If the pressure in the system is not constant, then for the correct operation of the automatic irrigation system, a special regulator is required that maintains a preset water pressure at the outlet.

4. Pipes.

The pipeline consists of two parts:

 1. the main pipe that connects the water supply to the solenoid valves, and
 2. sections of the pipe through which water is supplied to the sprinklers.

It is necessary to lay pipes as straight as possible, avoiding unnecessary turns and branches, since in these sections there is a large loss of water pressure.

The correct choice of pipe diameter determines the pressure with which water will be supplied to the sprinklers and its volume. This parameter is also consistent with the outlet on the pump - if the diameter of the outlet is 1 inch, then the central line pipe is taken with a size of 25 mm or 32 mm. In the secondary sections (branches), the diameter of the pipe is consistent with the diameter of the solenoid valve outlet. Smaller diameter pipes than the main line pipe can be used to maintain pressure on the branches.

Fittings for automatic watering are needed to create branches and turning sections, connect pipes, and change from one pipe diameter to another.

6. Solenoid valves.

Valves open and close the flow of water to irrigation areas. Valves are sized according to water flow. They are located in the ground, in special plastic boxes with a top cover that opens for maintenance. The valves are controlled by the controller.

7. Controller.

A device that is installed to control the entire irrigation system. The entire automatic system is controlled by a program that opens and closes solenoid valves at a certain time, ensures watering according to a given schedule. The controller can be connected to weather sensors that signal rain. While it is raining - watering does not work, as soon as the rain stops - the program returns to the water supply mode for irrigation.

8. Sprinklers (other names: sprinkler, sprayer, sprinkler, sprinkler)

There are two types of sprinklers used for lawn watering: rotary and fan (static). Fan sprinklers spray water 360 degrees. The radius of their watering can reach 6 meters. Some fan sprinklers are equipped with removable (replaceable) nozzles.

Rotary sprinklers rotate, gradually watering certain areas. For advanced models, the irrigation angle is adjustable.

The use of different types of sprinklers in the same irrigation zone is undesirable. Fan sprinklers are more often used for small lawns, while even golf courses are watered with the help of rotary sprinklers.

The main rule for the location of sprinklers is that the irrigation zones intersect. When choosing their location, it is necessary to ensure that stationary objects are not watered for which humidity is undesirable - a house, a fence, paths, and also take into account the placement of trees and shrubs that will prevent proper spraying and from high humidity can be affected by various diseases.

9. Water intake sockets.

This is a convenient additional option for an automatic irrigation system. Water intake sockets are installed on the main section of the lawn irrigation system and are always under pressure. They are intended for temporary connection for a specific purpose, for example: watering trees or shrubs, replenishing a pond with water, washing a car or paths.

Division into irrigation zones

Sometimes the debit of the water intake source may not be enough for the simultaneous watering of a large area of the lawn. Then several layers are made from the main pipe, creating separate irrigation zones. Before each branch, a solenoid valve is installed. The controller regulates the order in which zones are watered. Also, separate irrigation zones must be arranged if part of the lawn is on the sunny side, and part is in the shade. In the shade, the lawn is watered less frequently.

System maintenance

The lawn irrigation system is not dismantled for the winter, so you need to prepare it for the winter. Water may remain in the pipes, which, if frozen, will damage them. To drain water at the lowest point of the system, a special tap or valve (or several such taps) is installed. If it is not possible to drain all the water, it is necessary to blow out the system with compressed air.

2. Drip irrigation

The drip irrigation system is laid on the surface of the lawn and does not require deepening into the ground, so it is easy to organize it on an adult lawn. Typically, such a system is used on small or narrow lawns where it is inconvenient or impractical to install a system with sprinklers. Basically, drip irrigation is used for watering shrubs and vegetable gardens (including greenhouses).

The equipment for drip irrigation is the same as for an automatic irrigation system with sprinklers, except for the pipes and the sprinklers themselves. Instead, special hoses or drip irrigation tapes are laid. The most modern are ribbons with emitters. Emitters are droppers of a complex device that are located inside the hose at a certain distance from each other.

Advantages of a drip irrigation system:

 • Digging trenches for laying pipes is not required.
 • The watering zone is regulated more clearly and simply, in contrast to watering with sprinklers.
 • The irrigation zone can include those plants for which sprinkling can be harmful: flowers, vegetable beds, shrubs.
 • The influence of the wind is excluded.

Cons of drip irrigation:

 • Tape durability.
 • The need to dismantle all equipment for the winter.
 • There is a risk of damage to the system by animals.

The drip irrigation system can be connected to an irrigation system with sprinklers through a special reducer that reduces pressure.

Conclusion

A properly installed automatic lawn irrigation system will free you from tedious and long watering from a hose, and provide a beautiful view of the grass cover. If the area allotted for the green lawn is small, then it is quite possible to do the installation yourself.
