Chalk board - Let's make a fashion trend with our own hands! It is cheaper to do it yourself: we make and paint a chalk board Technology for the manufacture of chalk boards.

DIY, DO IT YOURSELF!

The chalk board is increasingly finding its use outside the walls of educational institutions. The strict rules for the design of a classic school board have blurred, in their place have come interesting forms and a decorative appearance. The chalkboard has become a part of the interior, allowing not only to decorate the room, but also to bring a useful component to it. Picking up on newfangled trends, designers began to widely use slate surfaces in their projects, photographers included chalk boards in the list of necessary props for photo shoots, calligraphers began to paint slate photo zones at weddings and presentations. Such a creative boom was due to a new look at the good old chalk board.

So I, imbued with this idea, decided to make a chalk board with my own hands. Only I could not find a special paint with the effect of a slate board. As often happens, if you light up some idea, you need to start implementing it on the same day. Patience is not enough, hands itch to get to work. I started looking for an alternative, as it turned out, there is a simple and budget option, which I will talk about in today's master class.

In order to make a slate board with our own hands, we need:

Acrylic paint for wood;

Matte black (or other to your taste) acrylic paint for the working surface of the board;

White Spirit;

Fugue for tiles (grout for filling tile joints);

Electric jigsaw or hacksaw;

Construction primer;

Brush and foam roller for decorative paint;

Sandpaper;

Screw-ring, screws;

Baguette frame;

Twine (rope or lace).

Tip: To decorate a chalkboard, you need to find a base with a large flat surface on which we will apply paint. The basis can be a wall in a room, a kitchen cabinet door, a baguette frame with a back wall (back), a sheet of plywood or fiberboard.

An old baguette frame was found in the attic. According to the dimensions of the frame, the back wall is cut out of fiberboard (48x38 cm, thickness 0.5 cm). Since the baguette frame lost its pompous appearance from time to time, and the stucco molding partially fell off, it was decided to remove it and clean the frame of paint.

Gypsum stucco is well removed with a spatula, and old paintwork with sandpaper. We clean the plaster and paint, apply a primer to the cleaned surface. After the primer has dried, cover the frame with two layers of paint with an interval of 24 hours. It remains to decorate the frame itself. We take paint and a brush. With light strokes, without painting over completely, we apply paint to the surface of the frame.

After about forty minutes, we moisten the cotton wool with white spirit and erase with it those places that came out unsuccessfully when stained. You can also walk along the surface to be painted so that the unpainted areas acquire the shade of the decorated paint.

Leave the decorated frame to dry completely. Now it's time to work on the back wall, which will be the basis for the slate board. For reliable adhesion of the paint and the fiberboard sheet, we clean its smooth surface with sandpaper. Then we cover with a primer, after about an hour, we apply a base coat of matte acrylic paint.

We apply homemade slate paint on top of the base layer. In order to make a paint with a slate effect, we need the acrylic matte paint itself and a fugue (tile grout). We take 3 parts of paint and one part of the fugue (3: 1) and mix with each other until smooth.

Tip: In order to minimize the formation of lumps, add the fugue gradually while stirring the paint at the same time. Paint color can be chosen to your taste. If the paint is not light, then the chalk on it will also be clearly visible.

After the mixture of paint and fugue is ready, we roll it out with a foam roller on the surface of the future board. Roll out the paint evenly and in one direction with a roller. The roller needs to be pressed a little when rolling on the fiberboard in order to roll out small lumps and press the fugue particles into the paint. If you want the chalkboard to last for a long time, then cover the base of the board with at least 3 layers.

After the paint on the frame and on the base of the slate board has dried, we combine the frame and the back wall together and fix them together with clamps. On the reverse side, we mark the markings with a pencil, along which we will fasten the frame to the back wall with screws. We take a drill with a drill of a smaller diameter of the screw thread, drill holes and wrap the screws in them.

Tip: By screwing the frame to the fiberboard, we will get a gap between the frame and the fiberboard sheet. Chalk dust will fall into the gap (where glass is usually inserted), which will prevent everything around from being stained with chalk.

Having decided in what position the board will hang (horizontally or vertically), we drill holes for fastening the screw-ring. A ring screw is a screw that has a ring instead of a head. Through this ring, you can thread a rope and hang the board on the wall. According to the thickness of the frame and fiberboard, we measure the length of the screw-ring so that when twisting it does not crawl out onto the front side of the baguette frame.

We clamp the ring screw in a vise along the measured length and bend it. Then we wrap the screw with the ring into the holes until the fold. We insert the rope into the rings and tie it - the chalk board is ready! With proper decoration of the baguette frame, the made coated board can fit into any interior.

Tip: To extend the life of your chalkboard, use soft crayons or a chalk marker.

In the way considered in today's article, if necessary, you can paint any objects and surfaces. With the help of colored crayons, you can create unique props for photo zones, wedding photo shoots and signs for messages to your loved one. If you cover a metal surface with homemade slate paint, then magnets can be attached to the chalkboard. Such a slate-magnetic board will be a great alternative to the refrigerator door. Housewives will appreciate the slate surface in their kitchen.

The chalkboard is great for a kid's room. On it, you can learn the alphabet, train to draw letters with chalk, draw and develop creative abilities in a child.

Such a useful recording tool will become an indispensable assistant in the workshop. It doesn’t matter whether it is sewing or locksmith, there is always a need to make a drawing that will always be in sight when doing work. The most important thing is that at any time you can make changes, erase everything and draw again.

The chalk board fits well into our interior and has become a good helper for organizing time and affairs. In addition, the home organizer from time to time becomes a message board.

The other day I got a large baguette frame from the attic, which I also plan to remake and hang in the room. What will come of this, you will find out in the next article. Subscribe to site updates, join groups on social networks, and you will be aware of new publications!

It is not always convenient to leave messages on a smartphone. For example, the mother left for work before the child woke up to go to school. And he has to give something. A text message can wake up a baby even if the smartphone is on vibration. And later, the mother risks forgetting to convey the message to her child. In this article, we will look at options for making slate reminder boards with your own hands, with which you can easily leave short messages to each other.

Variety of options

Many people prefer to use ordinary black paints, flavored with powder for grouting tile joints, to create slate boards. But few people know that special slate compositions are sold in stores. They are intended for painting surfaces on which they will later write with chalk. Their cost, as a rule, is quite high, but there is less fuss with the preparation of artisanal slate paint.

The same should be said about paints with magnetic properties. If you want to make a magnetic slate board, on which, if desired, you can hang a funny magnet, then they will come in handy for you.

The plane itself can be of any shape. To create small boards, you can use dense multi-layer plywood; for more bulky, a thick sheet or OSB board is suitable. If the household has a jigsaw, you can cut any blanks for boards from a piece of plywood. For example, a slate for a refrigerator can be in the form of a cloud, a polyhedral star, or a simple oval. Subsequently, the product can be enclosed in a frame, like a real picture, or you can equip it with a stand and make it desktop.

Making a board with acrylic paint

  • a blank cut from plywood, sanded and sanded along the edges with sandpaper or a simple cutting board;
  • black glossy acrylic paint;
  • powder for grouting tile joints;
  • small medium hard brush for painting;
  • container for the preparation of slate paint.

The surface painted with glossy paint will be perfectly flat. It is useless to write with chalk on such a board, since the chalk fractions will simply have nothing to cling to. The block will slide across the board without leaving a trace. That is why the paint should be roughened, and in this case the process of making a slate board begins with the preparation of a special paint. So, let's get started:

  1. Pour the amount of paint necessary to cover the surface of the workpiece into the prepared container, and mix it with the grouting powder in the proportions: part of the powder to one and a half parts of the paint (by volume). Then mix all the ingredients thoroughly. The paint is ready.
  2. Let's start painting. We apply the composition quickly, since the paint mixed with the powder dries up instantly, and stains may remain on the surface of the future slate board.
  3. Let dry thoroughly and test. Chalk adheres well to matte and slightly rough surfaces, the inscriptions are clear and durable. The resulting board, when properly painted, is in no way inferior to the store.

Matte acrylic paint for work

Here everything happens in the same order and in the same way as in the previous version, except that no grouting powder is needed. Matte acrylic paint itself has all the properties of slate. Chalk clings to it perfectly, and therefore you can immediately start painting.

After hardening, you will get the same wonderful board as in the first case. We make a couple of holes with a drill, thread a rope, tie it in a knot and hang it on a hook on the wall. The slate board is ready to use.

Making a board with slate paint

The fastest and easiest way to make a slate chalk board is with a special slate paint. The composition initially has all the necessary properties, and if you purchase it in a special can, then even a brush or roller is not needed for application.

Just apply a layer of slate paint to the sanded surface of the workpiece and let it dry. If the layer of paint did not suit you, and the wood absorbed it with excessive zeal, after it dries, you can apply another layer again. After the final drying, the board will be ready for use.

Production with special paints

There are many paints intended for the manufacture of slate boards, but you can not buy them everywhere. If desired, you can order online or purchase in specialized stores.

In this case, the following materials will be required:

  • cleaned wooden blank-base;
  • a jar of primer on wood;
  • slate paint (depending on preference or circumstances, this can be a special slate paint, matte acrylic or a mixture of glossy acrylic paint with grout powder);
  • brushes of medium hardness or small rollers for painting.

How to make a whiteboard with magnetic paint

The procedure in this case is as follows:

  1. So that expensive magnetic paint does not soak into the wood, losing its properties, or, conversely, so that its layers do not fall off the wood along with the magnets, a primer layer is initially applied to the base.
  2. After the primer dries, an even layer of magnetic paint is applied to it.
  3. And only when, in turn, the layer of magnetic paint dries up, a layer of slate paint is applied to it.

After complete drying on such a board, it will be possible not only to write with chalk, but also to place various funny magnets.

We use galvanized steel

The process of creating magnetic slate boards based on galvanized steel sheets is more laborious. And a set of tools with consumables here will need much more impressive. In particular, for the forthcoming work it is necessary to prepare:

  • galvanized sheet;
  • a sheet of thick plywood (or OSB);
  • scissors for cutting tin;
  • Double-sided tape;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • primer for metal;
  • slate paint (any of the above);
  • brushes or rollers for applying primer and paint;
  • plastic decorative corner.

The process of manufacturing magnetic slate boards based on galvanized

Production begins with the choice of sizes and other figurative features of the future board. When we have decided on the size and shape, we proceed directly to the process.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. The future base is cut out of a sheet of thick plywood (OSB).
  2. Galvanization is cut according to the same dimensions.
  3. Double-sided tape is glued in frequent stripes to the front side of the wood base.
  4. A galvanized sheet cut to the size of the base is applied to the tape strips, after which it is carefully pressed for a good grip.
  5. After the galvanizing is glued to the wooden base, you can start applying the primer to the galvanizing.
  6. After the primer has hardened, a layer of slate paint is applied on top of it.
  7. Wait for the slate paint to dry. Then you can start framing the future board into a frame from a decorative plastic corner.

After that, it remains only to equip the product with brackets of your choice. In specialized stores they are not counted. There are just hanging ones, there are with a changing angle of inclination, there are revolving from side to side. Agree, such a magnetic slate board on the wall, the photo of which is presented in this material, will look great in any interior.

Equipping the product with lighting

To make the slate board more elegant and aesthetic, you can frame it around the perimeter with an LED strip hidden in the groove of the wooden corner of the intricate frame. Also, the original frame can be made from the same decorative plastic corner, purchased 5 mm wider than the size of the wooden base. It must be fixed on the curb of the wooden base with an overlap, and place the LED strip in the resulting groove between the front side of the corner and the edge of the board surface.

Such a slate board will surely become the subject of your special pride. Firstly, you made it with your own hands, and secondly, you also achieved that it looks no worse than a store-bought one, plus it is equipped with a backlight functionality that expensive factory models do not have. It will not only faithfully serve you in accordance with its intended purpose, but will also become an excellent kind of lamp that can perfectly decorate any interior.

Information in conclusion

Those who are satisfied with our master class on how to make a slate board with their own hands at home can take note of the suggested tips.

And who is not enough - can watch another video for complete satisfaction. The video shows how real masters of "handicraft architecture", burdened with the dominance of useful proprietary technology, approach the manufacture of slate boards.

We hope that the boards made by your hands will be no worse than those shown in this video.

How to make a fashionable element of any interior and holiday yourself, and even 4 times cheaper than from a store? And we are silent about lettering.

We asked to teach us lettering and preparation of chalk boards Alexey Koval, creator of the Minsk Schools of typography. Aleksey creates fonts, teaches adults and children to write beautiful letters, and invites foreign calligraphers to Minsk.

WHAT HOW MUCH

Tablet 40x50 cm - 70,000 rubles.
Paint for chalk boards (100 g) - 35,000 rubles. (about 300,000 rubles per liter)
Crayons (packing) - 10,000 rubles.
And one more thing: a roller or a brush, a sharpener or a knife, a damp cloth.

DYE

The cheapest option - make paint by yourself. In one of the "Apartment shootings" architect Tatiana, how to do it: mix black acrylic with a fugue. Ordinary acrylic will cost you 50,000 rubles. per jar, but the surface is grainy and the chalk grinds off very quickly. Still on sale vinyl film for chalk boards. She can close absolutely any surface, but it looks unnatural - chalk leaves a very clear mark on it.

The cheapest option is to buy spray paint for a chalkboard, in building hypers it is sold for a hundred and kopecks of thousands of rubles. We chose convenience and touched on the future, we bought can of special paint: open it will be stored for a year, so you can paint everything. Even special paint washes better. Now there is not only black, but also other colors. Such a can of paint is enough for 18 m 2 - not only a board, but a wall can be painted! Shake it well before you start.

WHAT TO COLOR

Can buy cardboard stretcher(about 30,000 rubles), you can use a canvas stretched on a frame (although it bends - it’s not very convenient to draw). plywood tablet 40x50 cost 70,000 rubles. - it will turn out a decent board. The larger the format, the easier it will be to work.

Another option - building stores now do free plywood cutting. When you need a lot of boards, you can take a large sheet of chipboard and cut on the spot. This option is good for small jobs, because in large formats, chipboard will be slightly curved. It is possible and make your own plywood in different shapes- like a god for the soul to cut out of scraps. But you need a jigsaw.

To prime or not to prime is a matter of having money and time: in principle, the paint lays well even without a primer.

WHAT TO COLOR AND HOW LONG TO DRY

Ideally you should buy the best roller in the store, it’s better to ask a consultant, it will cost about 25,000 - 45,000 rubles. Can also be painted with a brush. The better you shake the paint, the better the result will be. On the bank it is written that it is recommended to start painting 24 hours after application, but in fact it is possible earlier. We were waiting three hours, three o'clock, painting over 3 layers. It is better not to be stingy, put 2-3 layers.

CHOOSE CHALK

Many people remember the 1990s, when pressed gypsum appeared in schools instead of normal chalk - it sometimes creaked disgustingly on the board, so some teachers bought and carried normal soft crayons with them.

Yes, chalk is real (10,000 rubles per pack), and there is pressed gypsum - it is cheaper and harder (up to 5,000 per pack). It is better to buy thinner crayons - we sell Giotto and Maped. There are also greasy crayons, called "sols". They give a bright color. There are also chalk markers.

Chalk is best sharpened - with a sharpener or a knife. You will also need a rag.

BASIC TECHNIQUES IN LETTERING

You can do the usual strokes and build up myasko-vertical thickenings, drops on this skeleton. You can add shadows, additional strokes, volumes, highlights, shading, tint some of the letters.

There are two approaches - super-perfectionism and bluff, and everyone chooses for themselves. When Igor Mustaev came last year with a master class, he said that colored chalk mixes well: you apply one, the second, then rub it.

Ribbon version - when we first write a letter and begin to draw a ribbon in two contrasting colors - we need to show how it would wrap. Great brain workout! One color for vertical strokes, another color for connecting strokes.

You can work with your handwriting - just write like on the board at school, and then add beauty. You can hide everything with color. If the letters stick together, then we can make a shadow or shading where there is a lot of space. First we make a parallel contour, then hatching, you can add all sorts of strokes.

Here's another interesting trick: we mark the format into segments according to the number of letters - we start drawing a line from the edge and write small letters at the marked points, connecting them with a long line. In any case, it is better to count the letters, estimating from the middle.

HOW MUCH SAVE

In the store you can buy a green board in an aluminum profile, larger than ours, for 120-150,000 rubles. But she doesn't look very good. Prices on the Internet for the same board as we did, up to 400,000 rubles. We spent 105,000 rubles on the board, almost 4 times cheaper!

It is not always convenient to leave messages to your relatives on the phone. Imagine such a situation, a mother left early for work, and she wants to give certain instructions to her child. By sending a message to the phone, she can wake him up.

And sometimes you forget what you wanted to say.

DIY slate board

Making a slate board is very exciting and it is not at all difficult to make it.

The instructions described in this material will give you the knowledge of how to make a slate board yourself.

Materials such as:

  • one of the types of bases: a plywood board, a special sanded blank or a regular cutting board;
  • glossy acrylic paint;
  • a special powder that is used to grout tile joints;
  • brush for painting medium hardness;
  • a bowl for preparing paint for coloring the board.

The paint for the slate board is made according to a special recipe. If you start painting the board only with glossy acrylic paint without adding certain components, then all the work will be done in vain.

All because it is impossible to make inscriptions on this board. The recipe for making a coloring agent is as follows: in a bowl, mix the coloring agent with the mashing agent, observing the dosage - one share of the mashing agent for 1.5 cans of the coloring agent. Now you know how to paint the reminder board.

It is necessary to make paint strictly according to the instructions. Coloring should be done quickly and accurately. This is due to the fact that the paint with the above powder dries very quickly and bumps and lumps may remain.

After the board has been painted, it needs to dry thoroughly. Upon completion of drying, the board can be tested. Due to the fact that the surface of the board turned out to be rough, it is good to write on it with chalk. The inscriptions are quite clear and persistent. A do-it-yourself board can be many times superior to the store version.

When painting the board, you can safely experiment with the color palette, so you can get the following options:

  • gray slate board;
  • black slate board;
  • green slate board;
  • slate board white.

As you can see, it is not necessary to follow the classic black slate version.

How to make a magnetic chalkboard

Often, the store version of a magnetic slate board is much inferior in quality. Over time, it becomes more and more difficult to write on it with chalk.

The surface of the board deteriorates, as a result of which the chalk scratches the board and thus the inscriptions are harder to wash off.

Contrary to this, the situation can be corrected by making a magnetic board at home.

To make it, you will need materials such as:

  1. The basis. The basis can serve as materials such as: chipboard, plywood with a thin layer, PVC.
  2. magnetic ground. It contains metallic particles.
  3. Slate effect paint.

You can make your own paint with the effect of a slate board.

You'll need:

  • latex paint - 1 glass;
  • cement - 2 tablespoons;
  • capacity;
  • large mixing spoon

IMPORTANT!!! Pay attention to the fact that there is no sand in the cement.

Cooking method

Pour two tablespoons of cement into a mixing container and mix with one glass of latex paint. We mix everything well. Paint is ready!

As for the manufacturing process itself of the above board, at the initial stage the board must be covered with magnetic soil. It should be noted that the primer is applied to a degreased surface. Magnetic primer should be applied in four layers. The more layers, the better the magnets will stick. Now you need to leave the board to dry for a whole day.

Then you can paint it. You need to paint with a special roller or brush.

The paint usually dries within one day. Further, the board can be safely tested and various magnets can be attached to it.

Now you know how to properly make a slate board at home without spending extra money.

Now you can easily decorate your home interior and thereby surprise your family and friends.

Almost all young children are very fond of drawing, often using the floor, walls and pieces of furniture as a “canvas”. Taking into account the needs of their child, resourceful parents make certain adjustments to the home interior, using a special paint, which is easy to apply and just as easy to remove chalk. In this case, it is not at all necessary to paint an entire wall or cabinet. A small chalk board is quite capable of satisfying the creativity of a child, which can also be useful for adult family members if you use it, for example, for notes and reminders of important matters.

The paint, which has the effect of a slate board, is very often used to restore furniture, making the coating matte, velvety and pleasant to the touch. Its creator is British designer Annie Stone. In 1990, she developed a special finishing material, which she began to sell under the brand name "ChalkPaint".

Making a chalkboard opens up a wide range of creative possibilities

Note! Given the name and consistency of "ChalkPaint", it is logical to assume that one of its components should be chalk (calcium carbonate). However, the problem is that for more than 20 years, the original recipe has not been revealed by its creator. Therefore, many clones have appeared on the market, created on the basis of a variety of materials.

In addition to an interesting visual effect, chalk paint has a number of operational advantages:

  • fits well on almost any material (wood, wood substitutes, metal, drywall, plaster, brick, tile and glass);
  • has excellent adhesion to the surface;
  • has good hiding power, hiding most of the defects of the old coating;
  • dries quickly;
  • does not have a strong odor;
  • non toxic.

The disadvantages of such a finish include its price and scarcity. "ChalkPaint" is not supplied to Russia at all, and its counterparts from the companies "Tikkurila" and "Siberia" are an order of magnitude more expensive than conventional paints and varnishes. Therefore, in order to save money, many people try to make a slate coating on their own, using more accessible and inexpensive components for this.

Factory slate paint is available in several colors

5 homemade chalk paint recipes

To make chalk paint with your own hands, you can use several recipes. The essence of each method is to add a fine loose substance to the usual glossy paint, which gives the coating the necessary roughness.

Acrylic or latex wall paint is suitable as the main component. The second is also made on an acrylic basis, however, due to the addition of rubber to the composition, it has increased strength characteristics. Therefore, if we are talking about the manufacture of a chalkboard, the coating of which will be constantly subjected to certain loads, it is better to stop at the latex version.

As an auxiliary component, you can choose sodium bicarbonate (regular baking soda), calcium carbonate, gypsum, tile grout and even cornstarch. All options have the right to life, and their success primarily depends on the right consistency.

Application of baking soda

Application of baking soda

Required proportion:

  • 2/3 paint;
  • 1/3 soda.

The preparation of such a composition is one of the most affordable options, since soda can be bought at any grocery store. The very process of creating paint is quite simple: you need to mix the two components until a homogeneous mass is obtained. If the mixture is very thick, adding a little water will help bring it to the desired consistency.

Advice! To avoid lumps, soda or any other bulk material should be added gradually.

When using such a composition, the complete coverage of the treated surface occurs when applying 3 layers of paint. After drying, the finish has a rather massive grainy texture. If it is necessary to get rid of such an effect, for example, for a chalkboard, too much grit is superfluous, it is enough to perform a fine grinding of the surface.

Application of corn starch

Required proportion:

  • 2/3 paint;
  • 1/3 starch.

Just like soda, cornstarch is sold in almost any supermarket and has a very affordable price. The technology for obtaining the desired mixture does not differ from the previous version, the only point is that you may need a little more water to get the mass that is optimal for applying to the surface.

For complete painting of the surface, 2 layers of coating are sufficient. At the same time, the need for fine sanding is also present, since after drying strokes will be clearly visible, which can adversely affect the texture of the finish.

Application of calcium carbonate

Application of calcium carbonate

Required proportion:

  • 2/3 paint;
  • 1/3 calcium carbonate.

The price of 1 kg of fine calcium carbonate powder exceeds 200 rubles, so this chalk paint recipe is not the cheapest. But from the point of view of the result, the addition of chalk allows you to get, perhaps, the best composition, which, after drying, has a uniform texture and does not require sanding. Full coverage of the part occurs after applying 2 layers of paint. With such a finish, you can safely open not only a chalkboard, but also furniture.

The use of gypsum

Building plaster

Required proportion:

  • 3/4 paint;
  • 1/4 plaster.

The use of building gypsum (alabaster) is one of the best options, taking into account the price / quality ratio. This material is an order of magnitude cheaper than chalk powder, while the coating after 2-layer processing has a uniform matte texture and, subject to the correct consistency of the paint composition, does not require additional grinding.

Note! Gypsum dries very quickly, so after making the mixture, it should be immediately applied to the surface.

The use of tile grout

Tile grout

Required proportion:

  • 3/4 paint;
  • 1/4 grout.

Tile grout is in the middle price range between calcium carbonate and stucco. The quality of the chalk paint obtained with this material is high enough, so it can be used to safely finish furniture. As a rule, it is enough to apply 2 coats of such a composition that the coating is uniform and does not have visible defects. In this case, fine grinding is not required, and after the surface has dried, you can immediately draw on it or make inscriptions with chalk.

Master class on making a board for drawing with chalk

Making a chalkboard with your own hands with the necessary components is very simple, especially if the master has detailed instructions with intelligible illustrations at his disposal.

Tools and materials

For work you will need the following materials:

  • glossy acrylic latex paint;
  • finely dispersed bulk component (one of those mentioned in the previous section);
  • container and stick for making the mixture;
  • medium hard brush or roller;
  • paper tape, if you need to protect the edges;
  • base for painting.

If the work will be carried out in a residential area, it is desirable to protect the working space from accidental ingress of paintwork material. To do this, you can use oilcloth or old fabric.

Note! The color of the paint for the chalkboard is selected individually. The choice does not have to be limited to the black option. Chalk will be clearly visible on brown, burgundy, blue, green and any other dark surface.

To make a slate board, a standard paint tool kit is used.

Main stages of work

  1. Any material can be used as a base for the board: plywood, chipboard, fiberboard, MDF, natural wood or drywall. It is desirable that the base be smooth, without visible defects. Otherwise, it is necessary to sand the surface with sandpaper. The same procedure (grinding) should be performed if the workpiece has a glossy finish. In order for the paint to have good adhesion to the surface, the gloss must be removed.

For this master class, an ordinary cutting board was chosen as the basis, which is available to any hostess

  1. Chalkboard paint can be prepared using any of the methods listed above. Most often, a combination of latex paint with gypsum or tile grout is used for such purposes.

If the surface to be treated has a small area, you can prepare the finish in any improvised container

  1. The resulting mixture should be applied immediately after preparation, as it dries quickly. In order for the coating to turn out uniform, brush strokes should be fairly smooth.

2-layer processing is usually enough to completely paint over the workpiece.

  1. Drying time for chalk paint is in the range of 30 to 60 minutes. If everything has been done correctly, the surface will soon become matte and velvety.

If there are visible irregularities, light sanding with fine-grained sandpaper should be carried out.

  1. After drying, the slate board can be tested for functionality by making a small note or sketching a fun drawing.

The colors of the chalk and the board should be contrasting so that the inscription is well read.

How to care for a slate board

Despite the excellent performance of chalkboards, they can be easily scratched by hard objects. Therefore, you should not draw with cheap chalk, since it often contains impurities of sand and small pebbles. For home use, it is better to buy special crayons for drawing, which tend to respect the surface.

Note! The composition of crayons for drawing, in addition to calcium carbonate, includes a coloring pigment and a binder designed to reduce dust formation during operation.

Do not use abrasive material or aggressive cleaners to wipe the inscriptions from the board. To erase the chalk, just apply a damp soft cloth or sponge.

The use of a soft material to clean the board from chalk will significantly extend its service life.

A do-it-yourself chalk board for drawing or writing will allow you to solve several problems at once. Such an accessory will decorate almost any interior, and all important things will be recorded, which means they will be completed. But most importantly, the results of children's creativity will move from the walls, floors and furniture to the surface intended for this.
