A highchair created by oneself is a solid piece of furniture for a child. In the process of work, you take into account the dimensions of the seat and back, which are as comfortable as possible for a growing baby, and check the strength of the structure directly at home.

A wooden chair created by your own hands can be decorated to your liking, and not be content with a ready-made solution for purchased furniture.

Necessary materials and tools

To create a chair, you will need various materials. Individual parts will be made from them. First of all, these are wooden bars and boards from which the frame, seat and back are assembled. Instead of natural solid wood, chipboard or plywood can be used, but these materials are short-lived. For fastenings, take self-tapping screws in sufficient quantities. You will need sandpaper of medium hardness.

Bar dimensions (length):

  • supporting legs - up to 20 cm;
  • connecting strips of the seat frame - up to 20 cm;
  • back straps - up to 20 cm.

A handmade wooden chair can be decorated to your liking.

In the manufacturing process for the legs, the thickest bars with a section of 5x5 cm are used. For the slats, parts with a diameter half that of the support ones are taken.

For slats, parts are taken with a diameter half that of the reference ones.

The parameters of the seat board (height and width) should also not exceed 20 cm. The back part may be slightly higher, but preferably no more than 30 cm.

  • they are less durable;
  • the environmental friendliness of such products is not 100% proven.

The parameters of the seat board (height and width) should also not exceed 20 cm.

To make a chair with your own hands, you need the right tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw;
  • wood cutter.

The dorsal part may be slightly higher, but preferably no more than 30 cm.

The assembled chair "requires" the original decor. In addition to the carving option, you can use paint or other materials to apply a pattern or application. You will need a stencil to accurately apply the image.

Deciding on design and construction

For wood products, you can come up with any option. The highchair is usually made with straight supports and the following forms of the spinal structure:

  • solid square or rectangular;
  • wide truncated cone;
  • straight through (with a jumper bar).

You will need a stencil to accurately apply the image.

Creating a product with your own hands requires careful preparation. First of all, you need to make a sketch of the project. Draw a visual diagram of the connections of all parts separately with calculations of sections and lengths. Following the sketches, you will recreate the model in reality with accurate parameters. A chair, where all the thoughtful dimensions are observed, will “fit” the baby, will not create inconvenience.

For wood products, you can come up with any option.

Certain models are created with the expectation that the child sits at a common table with other family members. In this case, high legs are chosen for the product, which are not attached exactly vertically with respect to the seat and floor, but more widely. The lower part of such a chair will look like a truncated cone, connected for stability with wooden bars around the perimeter. The upper part will be about 30-35 cm below the level of the table.

If you have certain skills, then you can assemble a folding product. Such items are easily removed if necessary in storage places.

For the selected design solution, the details are processed in accordance with it.

Manufacturing process: step by step instructions

After preparing the drawing with the exact parameters, we begin to assemble a simple highchair.

  1. Calculate exactly according to the scheme the length of the legs, saw off the excess with a hacksaw.
  2. Saw to size jumper bars that will secure the frame in the seat area.
  3. Connect them to the supporting structure. For reinforcement, add furniture glue.
  4. Attach the pre-fitted back and seat with self-tapping screws.
  5. All parts of wood must be cleaned with sandpaper so that there are no roughness and burrs.

A chair, where all the thoughtful dimensions are observed, will “fit” the baby, will not create inconvenience.

If the parts are disproportionate, "adjust" them according to the design scheme using a hacksaw. To make the highchair created by yourself comfortable, ask the baby to sit on it, ask how comfortable he is.

If all dimensions have been determined correctly, the child will like the new furniture. To make the details smooth, go over the surface with sandpaper again.

Certain models are created with the expectation that the child sits at a common table with other family members.

To varnish the product, use only safe compositions - a special coating for children's furniture, environmentally friendly and having the appropriate certificate.

The upper part will be about 30-35 cm below the level of the table.

After finishing the exterior varnish, let the chair dry well, a day or two. Then you can proceed to the decorative finish, if any. If it consists in carving, then varnishing is done after the completion of the artistic processing and sanding of the parts.

Chair decoration

Use a jigsaw for carving. You can make a decoration in the form of a flower by cutting it in the center of the back, or any geometric shape. First, at the place of the future decor, make a markup with a pencil so that the thread is even. Parts such as legs and back can be carved. The corners of the seat can be rounded off with a jigsaw and sandpaper.

In the manufacturing process for the legs, the thickest bars with a section of 5x5 cm are used.

The top can also be made not strictly rectangular, but a truncated cone, rounded, composite. In the latter option, you will need additional bars and cross bars - one or two. They are fixed due to special holes in the junctions with the dorsal frame. This is a rather time-consuming process, but if you wish, you can choose this option.

For fastenings, take self-tapping screws in sufficient quantities.

All actions for processing parts must be performed before the highchair is assembled - so the work process will be faster, more convenient and more accurate.

If you have certain skills, then you can assemble a folding product.

To make a piece of children's furniture made with your own hands look more interesting, you can put a pattern on the back and seat. To do this, you need to use safe paints. The color scheme should be bright, cheerful. Simple ornaments, floral patterns, imitation of children's toys, such as cars, look great on wooden furniture.

Instead of natural solid wood, chipboard or plywood can be used, but these materials are short-lived.

Due to the fact that the size of the product is small, a large pattern will become a kind of accent that attracts the attention of the child - he will like to sit on such a beautiful chair, play or have breakfast.

In decoration, you can use applications - there are plenty of adhesive bright films on sale.

The image will turn out even if you use a stencil previously cut out of paper or thick plastic.

In decoration, you can use applications - there are plenty of adhesive bright films on sale. The image will be monophonic or multi-color - it depends on your imagination.

First of all, these are wooden bars and boards from which the frame, seat and back are assembled.

It is not recommended to use volumetric (protruding) parts, both small and large, in the decoration of the seat or back of the children's chair. Firstly, it is inconvenient for the child, and secondly, they quickly fall off with frequent use of the product.

To create a chair, you will need various materials.

VIDEO: DIY highchair

For people who know how to hold a hammer and a hacksaw in their hands, and even more so, those who know how to use electric carpentry tools, making a children's chair for feeding with their own hands is not a problem. And in order to get new ideas, your attention is a selection of the most interesting and comfortable home-made children's feeding chairs.

2-piece baby high chair

Such a chair consists of a chair with a small table, which can be used in a low position, or can be installed on a separate stand. This stand can also serve as a more spacious table to an existing chair.

To make a chair, you will need beams with a cross section of 400x200 mm, a board 20 mm thick and a fiberboard sheet with a minimum size of 2000x2100 mm. The details necessary to create a chair will be cut out of the beams, rounded elements for the handles of the chair from the board, and the seat and back of the future feeding chair from the fiberboard sheet. For tables, plywood, wood or laminated chipboard is used - only 750X450mm. If there is no new material, then it is quite possible to get by with the old one, having previously processed it using the decoupage technique.

For the chair you will need:

  • 4 legs 390 mm long;
  • 4 rounded elements;
  • 2 top bars 220 mm each;
  • 2 bottom rails 340 mm each;
  • 3 crossbars of 300 mm;
  • 1 small tabletop (approximately 200x340 mm).

To create a table from wood, you need to cut out:

  • 4 legs of 500 mm;
  • 4 strips of 410 mm;
  • 4 crossbars of 340 mm;
  • 1 tabletop - 380x450 mm.

Technology for creating a children's chair for feeding (with a drawing)

Cooking details

1. The bars need to be cut in half, then cut out the details of the desired length.

2. Finished elements are treated with sandpaper.

3. Rounded parts are cut out of the board according to the scheme, having previously transferred the markings to a wooden surface. The scheme is redrawn so that the wood fibers are perpendicular to the fold angle. Then the part will be solid.

4. The parts are connected using rectangular dowels and glue.

5. Wooden connecting elements (dowels) are cut out with a size of 8X20X50 mm. Under the dowels in the details, holes are made with a depth of 30-40 mm, corresponding to the size of the joints.

We collect the sidewalls

The side of the chair consists of 2 roundings, upper and lower crossbars and 2 legs. Pre-prepared dowels and holes are smeared with glue. First, assemble the legs and the lower crossbar. Make sure the corners are 90 degrees. The next stage is the assembly of the upper crossbar and 2 roundings. When the glue is taken, connect all the elements together, pulling them together with a clamp and leaving to dry for one day. The second sidewall is assembled in the same way. But it will not be superfluous during the assembly to compare both elements to make sure that they came out identical. Finished sidewalls are treated with sandpaper.

Assembling the seat and back

For the seat and back of fiberboard, we cut out 6 parts measuring 300X250 mm.

Two corners are rounded so that the radius of curvature is 50 mm. The ends of the parts are carefully sanded. Then we glue 3 identical parts and place them under the press.

Between themselves, the back and seat can be connected either with a corner and screws, or with a strip of tin 80-100 mm thick, bent in the center, and with screws.

Collecting the whole chair

The sidewalls are connected to each other using crossbars 300 m long. To begin with, try to “bait” the structure and mark the places where there will be holes for the dowels.

4 holes are pre-drilled in the slats under the seat. In the bar supporting the back there are also 4 (2 at the ends for attaching to the sidewall and 2 cylindrical in the bar itself for attaching the back). On the sidewalls, 2 holes are made for the bar holding the backrest, and 2 for the bar to which the tabletop is attached.

When all the holes are ready, check if the dowels fit well, assemble the structure. Only then put the parts on the glue. After the final drying, the entire product is sanded (especially the ends) and varnished.

Putting together a table

The legs are connected to the upper and lower slats (length - 410 mm each). Between themselves, the sidewalls are fastened with crossbars (length - 340 mm each). A tabletop is attached to one of the ends of the structure.

The sequence of actions is the same. We try on, mark a place for connections, cut holes and dowels, assemble the structure, check the corners and whether the connections are suitable, after which we alternately lubricate with glue and assemble the sidewalls, fasten them with crossbars to each other, install the countertop. We additionally process the finished structure with sandpaper, after which we open it with varnish.

To make the child sit comfortably, we cover the seat and back with fabric (leatherette), having previously laid foam rubber or batting and securing it with a stapler. The seat and back can be upholstered even before assembly. Then you need to carefully make a hole in the skin and further process these places.

This is just one of the options (the easiest and most convenient) for a baby feeding chair. Photos will help you imagine all the possible variety of this type of furniture made by yourself.

So, a children's chair for feeding, the seating diagram of which is presented below, is a little more compact, but more difficult to implement.

There are simply attachments to the usual chair for adults.

The simplest, most compact and convenient option is a children's feeding chair sewn from fabric. The price of such a device is quite high. But to make it with your own hands, having a diagram at hand and understanding how such a thing is attached to an ordinary chair, is very simple.

We sew a mobile children's chair for feeding (instruction)

We will need:

  • fabric (linen, lining, cotton) - about 2-3 m;
  • 2.5 m slings;
  • 3 carabiner buckles;
  • as an option - 3 m of thick and durable braid (you can sew it yourself);
  • threads, scissors, needles, sewing machine.

Pay attention to the diagram. This device consists of fastening to a chair and a child seat.

Having put the child in such a device, it is securely fixed with the help of wide straps to an ordinary adult chair. The width of such a pocket depends on the width of the chair. Therefore, it is often made standard or slightly wider, so that, if necessary, the child can be seated both in a home chair and in the one that grandparents have.

From the fabric (not necessarily the same), two parts are cut out, which are sewn together. It is better if cotton or linen is on the inside of the product (smaller detail), and the lining fabric is on the outside (larger detail). If you look at the pattern, then a fold is provided in the upper (rectangular) part of the product. The fabric in this place is folded and attached. The resulting “bag” is put on a chair, then the child is seated and fixed with straps, which are either fastened with a carbine or tied at the back. Loops are provided so that the straps do not fall off at the back, but support the child higher under the handles. In such a chair, it is safe to feed a child not only at home or at a party, but also in a restaurant. You can always carry the device with you.

Ideally, in a family where there is or is planning a small child, there should be both a stationary and a mobile chair. Therefore, both dad, who is friends with carpentry, and mom, who knows how to sew, should know how to make a chair for feeding a child.

When a baby appears in the house, new items appear that he needs. And of course, every parent wants to get all the best for the child. And what could be better than making your own. After reading our article, you can effortlessly make a baby highchair with your own hands. Drawings, dimensions, diagrams - all this will be discussed. And most importantly - it will be comfortable and safe for your baby, because you will be sure of the quality of the selected materials and the reliability of the assembly of the entire structure.

DIY highchair

Your baby will need such a feeding chair when he is six months old, and he begins to sit up on his own. On the chair is the formation of the musculoskeletal system of your baby, and his posture. This will be his first property, thanks to which he will get acquainted with the outside world.

That is why a highchair for feeding should be not only comfortable, but also useful.

General requirements

In order for this piece of furniture to turn out to be practical and comfortable, you need to consider the following nuances:

  1. The chair should not be soft. In order for the child's skeleton to develop correctly, the body must feel secure support. But on a highchair, you need relatively thin soft pads on the seat and back.
  2. Chair material. It is important for a child to use non-toxic, natural, for example, wood, plywood, chipboard.

Important! Do not use plastic, as it contains not always harmless substances.

  1. Chair dimensions. In order for your baby to feel comfortable on the seat, you need to correctly calculate the height of the backrest and the length and width of the seat.

Important! There is a special table, which is made for children's furniture. According to this table, we determine that the height of the seat of the chair should be 20 cm if your child's height is from 80 to 90 cm, and the width, depth is 33 and 26 cm, respectively.

Feeding chair options

The child begins to eat at the common table, starting at six months. Of course, it is necessary that the baby eats with all family members. Various options have been developed for convenience, but by putting the baby in a homemade chair, you must be sure of his safety.

Designs of children's chairs for feeding:

  1. A chair with high legs is made on long legs. Sitting in it, the baby will be on the same level with everyone sitting at the dining table.
  2. Soft cover - looks like a slim, which is attached to a regular chair. This option can be taken with you to the country or to visit.
  3. Combined chair - a small chair with restrictive rings is placed on a low table.

Material selection

For the manufacture of a chair suitable wood coniferous pine or spruce. This type is quite durable and easy to process, the wood texture is pleasant to look at.

Carpentry tools:

  • nails, sandpaper;
  • loops, self-tapping screws, dowels (special connecting elements);
  • saw;
  • a hammer;
  • glue for wood;
  • fiberboard sheet, plywood;
  • fabric, batting or synthetic winterizer;
  • varnish or paint for finishing, brushes.

Important! Choose acrylic-based paint, and non-toxic water-based varnishes, because your baby can not only breathe them, but try them on the tooth.

Do-it-yourself combined highchair

We offer a detailed description of the stages of work on the manufacture of parts and assembly of a combined feeding chair. Here you need to make a chair and a table separately. This assembled option can be used by feeding the child at a common table, and after disassembling it, you can sit the child behind it for various games and activities.

Procurement of parts

The first stage is the preparation of all the details for this chair. You need to prepare the following materials:

  • timber with a thickness of 200x400 mm - for legs and crossbars;
  • a small board with a thickness of 200-250 mm - for cutting out armrests;
  • fiberboard sheet 2x2.1 m for the back and seat;
  • plywood for countertop.

Preparing parts for the chair

To make a chair, you will need the following parts:

  • 4 children legs - workpiece length 390 mm;
  • 3 children transverse bar - 300 mm long;
  • 4 children rounded elements;
  • 1 children tabletop 200x340 mm (can be changed to your taste);
  • 2 pcs. - upper crossbar size 220 mm;
  • 2 pcs. - bottom crossbar size 340 mm.

Important! In order for your do-it-yourself baby highchair to turn out beautiful and even, the dimensions of the parts must exactly match the drawing.

Making parts for the table

It will require:

  • 4 legs 500 mm long;
  • 4 cross rails size 340 mm;
  • 4 plates 410 mm long;
  • plywood for countertops with dimensions of 380x450 mm.

Important! You can not buy all the necessary materials, you can choose the right size using items that are unnecessary in your household.

Now we have already reached the main stage - the assembly of the entire structure. Be attentive and accurate in your work, do everything perfectly, because you are trying for your child, which means that you must ensure him, first of all, safety and convenience.

Wood preparation:

  1. During production, the wood beam is sawn into certain dimensions. After cutting the parts into sizes, you need to remove all irregularities, roughness, scratches with sandpaper.
  2. The detail of the rounded element of the sidewall for the high chair must be rounded off using a carpentry machine or an electric jigsaw.

Important! It is necessary to make roundings of the sidewall according to the drawing of the children's high chair.

  1. It was necessary to fasten with the help of dowels (can be purchased in the furniture fittings department). In extreme cases, the use of self-tapping screws is allowed.

Mounting process:

  1. At the attachment points on the board or bar, we cut or drill holes with a depth of 30-40 mm using a drill.

Important! Carefully make holes without drilling through the parts of the chair.

  1. We connect and insert dowels.

Sidewall assembly

Your chair will have two sides to keep your little one from falling. To do this, you will need for each sidewall:

  • 2 roundings;
  • 2 legs;
  • 2 straps top and bottom.

We collect the sidewall separately each. For this you need:

  1. Connect the legs and the lower crossbar.
  2. Fasten the rounding to the top crossbar.
  3. Glue these two parts together.

Important! Before connecting two bars, the hole and dowel must be lubricated with furniture glue or PVA.

The same collection process will take place for the second part of the sidewall. All elements must be left to dry for a day. After - go over the sandpaper on this part of the chair to finally remove all the bumps.

Important! Make sure that all the corners between the bars are straight and the side parts are symmetrical.

seat manufacturing

Let's start the process:

  • Cut out 6 rectangles 300x250 mm from chipboard.
  • Round off 2 corners along the long side.
  • Sand all edges with sandpaper.
  • Glue 2 plates put under the press.
  • Fix the finished parts with a strip of metal bent along or screw with screws.

Seat assembly

We proceed to the assembly of the chair, for this you need:

  • Connect the sidewalls with transverse strips using dowels, as described above.
  • Fasten the planks to support the back and the plywood countertop using the same method.

Important! In order to make it more convenient to fold the structure, it is required to outline the installation locations for the dowels, drill holes and bait the bars without glue. Carefully review, remove all flaws. Then you can use glue for the final joining of the elements.

Table making

The technological process itself is very similar to the assembly of a chair.

Table assembly technology:

  1. Attach the top and bottom strips to the legs.
  2. With transverse bars 340 mm long, fasten the side parts of the table.
  3. We grind the sides with fine-grained sandpaper.
  4. Tabletop fastening - it is necessary to fasten from the end of the structure.

seat manufacturing

This stage is optional, but for the comfort of your child, do not spare the material and the time spent. For this you will need:

  • foam rubber with a thickness of not more than 2 cm;
  • dense furniture fabric or colorful oilcloth;
  • construction stapler.

Let's start the process, for which you will need:

  1. Cut the foam along the contour of the seat and back.
  2. Glue to chipboard with PVA.
  3. Cut out the patterns of the back and seat, making 4-5 cm allowances for the hem on the seat, and on the back it will take so much to fit two sides.
  4. Place upholstery on the seat.
  5. Fasten on four sides with staples on the reverse side.
  6. Shoot around the circumference of the seat, while adjusting the uniform tension of the fabric.

Important! Using the same techniques, you need to tighten the back of the seat with the difference that here you will also fit the wrong side, while wrapping the fabric diagonally with an envelope.

Mobile high chair

You can take this version of the chair with you to the country or to visit. We offer you a portable (mobile) version of the high chair, which you can sew at home with basic sewing skills.

Personally made furniture keeps the warmth of the soul of its creator. It is especially pleasant when people dear to their hearts use such man-made objects, again and again remembering the craftsman with gratitude. And the best way to show your abilities is, of course, to make a highchair with your own hands.

You can buy a highchair in the store. However, it can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for the health of the child.

This miniature piece of furniture will faithfully serve the precious baby and, in addition, the creator can be completely confident in the safety of the materials used.

Materials and tools

The baby will be able to use such a cute and, most importantly, durable chair for several years. The dimensions of the furniture are ideal for a child aged 2-4 years. Additionally, the product can be decorated by applying a bright ornament or pattern to the back.

To complete the product, you will need the following tools:

To make a highchair, you may need a hacksaw, screwdrivers, pliers, self-tapping screws, a hammer, nails, a screwdriver, etc.

  • saw;
  • electric drill;
  • sandpaper or grinder;
  • self-tapping screws and a screwdriver;
  • building corner and pencil;
  • furniture varnish, brush, thinner.

Of course, every parent wants only the best for their child and tries to take care of his health. Such a chair will help protect the baby from unnecessary contact with materials that emit harmful substances. For the manufacture of a piece of furniture, you can use natural pine timber. It is easy to process and absolutely environmentally friendly. To do you will need:

  • furniture board 20 mm thick for seat and backrest;
  • bar 40 * 40 * 210 - 2 pcs.;
  • bar 40 * 40 * 450 - 2 pcs.;
  • bar 20 * 40 * 160 - 4 pcs.;
  • bar 20 * 40 * 200 - 4 pcs.

Pine bars can be purchased ready-made or cut yourself. If you decide to cut a solid beam or board with your own hands, it is important to carefully monitor the perpendicularity of the cut lines.

After acquiring a furniture board, it is necessary to cut out 2 blanks from it: 280 * 150 mm and 280 * 260 mm. When sawing, it is important to carefully check the correspondence of the angles and the parallelism of the lines with the help of a construction angle. Only a perfect match will save the future highchair from distortions and gaps that the baby can get hurt about.

Preparation and assembly

Scheme of the device of a children's high chair: 1 - upper crossbar; 2 - rear leg; 3 - carved crossbar; 4 - middle crossbar; 5 - boards for the seat; 6 - lower crossbar; 7- side crossbar and tsarga; 8 - front leg; 9 - front crossbar and side.

Before proceeding directly to the assembly of the product, all parts must be carefully prepared. Depending on the quality of wood processing, it is necessary to use a grinder or sandpaper. If there are irregularities and scuffs on the canvas on the bars, it is worth using sandpaper in the following sequence: rough processing - grit 40, intermediate - 80, final grinding - 120. Only after the bars are brought into proper form, you can start assembling the chair.

Details 40 * 40 mm are the legs of the future high chair, respectively, long bars are the basis of the back. Details 20* 40 jumpers fixing the legs. You need to act according to the following scheme.

  1. All 4 legs of the future product must be placed vertically and fastened with jumper bars at a distance of 10 cm from the bottom edge.
  2. After that, attach the upper jumpers back to back with the top of the legs. For fastening, you need to use furniture screws with a large thread pitch. The frame of the chair is ready.
  3. After that, you can fix the seat and backrest. It is better to do this from the back of both parts, which will hide the heads of the screws.
  4. After that, the almost finished chair needs to be ennobled. It must be covered with furniture varnish in several layers and allowed to dry.
  5. To make the coating perfectly even, you can again disassemble the product and process each part separately. This method will avoid lacquer drips and drops that can ruin the final look of the chair. You can assemble furniture after the coating has completely dried.
  6. After the smell of the treatment agent disappears, you can give the new high chair to the child.

High chair made from old chairs

You can also make a comfortable high chair with your own hands. Since this piece of furniture is not used for long, it is not always advisable to spend the family budget on it. All you need is two old solid Soviet chairs and two wooden slats. And, of course, a tool that any homeowner will have.

It is important that the chairs are reliable, equipped with straps connecting the legs, these parts will serve as side rails to ensure the safety of the baby.

One of the chairs needs to be turned over and positioned as shown in the diagram. The back of the lower chair will serve as the front legs, it must be strong enough. The rear legs of the lower chair must be additionally fastened with a strap. After the approximate frame is ready, with the help of wooden slats, both chairs must be combined into a single stable structure.

For the seat, back and tabletop, you can use any smooth boards of a suitable size. You can improve this chair with a soft cushion on the seat, it will make feeding your baby as comfortable as possible.

Whatever method of making a highchair would be chosen, it is important to take care of the safety of this furniture.

All lacquers and finishes must be non-toxic and completely dry before being put into service. For upholstery, it is better to use leatherette, it is pleasant to the touch and easy to clean. The heads of the self-tapping screws must be deep enough and closed with smooth plastic plugs. And, of course, all details must be carefully processed with sandpaper.

And decorating new furniture can be entrusted to its new owner. Joint creativity will allow you to get closer to the child. And the kid will always be proud that a loved one made him such a practical and beautiful gift with his own hand.

One of the founders of the Encyclopedia Denis Diderot was once asked by a familiar lady: at what age should one start raising a child? "How old are you?" he asked in response. "Oh, he's only one day old!" The philosopher shrugged his shoulders: "In that case, you are already a day late."

A child will need a high chair not on the first day of his life, but when the baby begins to sit down on his own, at about 6 months. But his role in the formation of the personality of a new person is by no means small. Firstly, the formation of the musculoskeletal system and correct posture begins on the chair. Secondly, a child learns to handle things from a high chair. This is the first property of his that is not a toy. Children who grew up on the lap of their mother or grandmother, on average, get along worse with others and realize their abilities less well.

The interests of parents, too, of course, cannot be discounted. Feeding a small child often causes a storm of emotions in him, which parents at the moment, perhaps, are simply tiresome. Feeding something that spins like a spinning top on its knees, calmly and kindly, is worth a lot of effort; the child feels it and only gets more excited, which does not benefit him in any way. In addition, you need to protect clothes, carpets, furniture from volleys of porridge, soup or mashed potatoes.

Therefore, from a fairly large number of varieties of children's chairs, the first in importance and time of the beginning of use is a high chair. A little later, after about another 4-6 months, he will need a play/work chair. In that order, we will deal with them.

General requirements

To make a useful and comfortable highchair for your baby with your own hands, you must first take into account ergonomics.

First, the stool for younger children should not be too soft: in order for the skeleton of the child to grow correctly and the muscles to develop, his body must feel a reliable support. It is desirable to make a high chair generally hard, but relatively thin soft pads on the seat and back are needed on the high chair and work chair. The gaming and work chairs are often the same, how can it be?

You can combine these conditions by sewing the size of the seat and back cushions of the following structure (from bottom to top): canvas or burlap - synthetic winterizer 5-7 mm - flannel, calico or bike - decorative fabric. To fix them, you will have to sew on straps that tie / fasten under the seat or behind the back, but it simplifies the manufacture of the chair itself and its care.

Second, avoid plastics. Today, the safety of high-density polyethylene (produced without the use of catalysts) and PET has been unconditionally confirmed for children's items, but there are no suitable blanks from them for home craftsmanship. PVC seat upholstery is a relic of the past: when there were no diapers, diaper rash in babies was more common without it.

The next point is the size of the chair. A table of recommended sizes of highchairs for games and activities is shown in fig. The main selection parameter for it is the growth group. The height of the back is obtained by subtracting the height of the seat from the total height of the chair; in the highchair, it must be determined separately, because. his seat is raised for the comfort of the mother. The table was compiled for children's institutions, the dimensions of a chair for a child in a family can be found more accurately and simply: we look carefully at whom he went with height and complexion; about eyes, eyebrows, etc. disputes later. Then the parent-prototype shows which chair she/he is most comfortable in, take measurements from it and multiply by 0.55. A child on such a seat will be fine from about a year old to 4-5.

Note: Based on the foregoing, all dimensions of the following product samples are subject to adjustment if necessary.

materials

What to make a chair for a small question is also important. Metal is better either not to use at all, or in a small amount (for example, fasteners) and so that the child does not have access to it. The children's body is generally more resilient than an adult, but the skin of babies is very sensitive. This is determined by the instinct of self-preservation: what is simply slippery and a little cold for an adult, for a small one is a danger signal. Since he himself cannot yet avoid her, he has to appeal to his parents. How - whoever has children, they know. But they don’t always understand why, and from that, at least scream yourself.

For example, in fig. on the right - the erroneous use of steel fasteners."Intensive use of the corners" not only does not strengthen the structure, contrary to the assertions of its author, but is also traumatic for the baby. An adult's finger in the corner with a self-tapping screw will go unnoticed, and the baby may get scratched. In general, children do not care about scratches, but if he is regularly put for feeding in something biting, then how will this chair affect the child's psyche? The question is rhetorical.

Processing and finishing

So, we are practically left with only wood, MDF and laminated chipboard of class E0 in terms of the degree of phenol emission. In a high chair for a very young child, it is still better to get by with hardwood or MDF, they are completely without “chemistry”. Hypersensitivity to pine resin or trace phenolic compounds occurs in about 1 in 400,000 babies, but what is the guarantee that this is not yours? It is impossible to detect in advance.

The highchair for babies is exposed to external chemical influences of about the same nature and to the same extent as a kitchen stool, but the sanitary and hygienic requirements for it are much stricter. Therefore, the parts of a children's high chair made of wood must be treated with a water-repellent and bactericidal composition before assembly, and the finished product should be covered with a protective layer.

There is also almost no alternative here: impregnation is a water-polymer emulsion or, instead, PVA diluted three or four times with water. Coating - water-based acrylic lacquer. There is no completely reliable evidence of complete safety for children of other compositions for processing / finishing furniture. Especially beware of stains; varnished children's furniture is best left as is. Design and decor in this case are by no means decisive factors.

About plywood

When making a highchair for the firstborn from wood, an amateur craftsman (who, perhaps, takes up furniture for the first time in his life) will have to face a number of technological difficulties, see below resp. section, not surmountable without a workshop and special tools. Plywood can help out; almost everything can be done from it at home. But - not everyone. Definitely suitable is a simple birch (not waterproof and not baked) and also a simple construction or packaging. The last one is the veneer of the so-called. dry pines, felled in winter. Dry wood pine already contains almost no resins, and during the manufacture of plywood, their residues are completely removed. These types of plywood are made on casein glue, which is absolutely safe for children. Moisture resistance and additional strength are given to them by the impregnation described above, but twice: again after complete drying (about a day) of the initial one.

About glue

PVA is most suitable for gluing and gluing in the manufacture of children's furniture in terms of the combination of qualities. Modern furniture pur-adhesives are much stronger, but also more expensive; for a product whose service life does not exceed 5-7 years, the first is insignificant, but the second can “bite”. But PVA has the following advantages:

  • It is absolutely harmless and safe, which has been verified by more than half a century of experience. As they say, at least eat it; even if liquid gets into the eyes, it is washed off without residue with water, if only rinsed immediately.
  • PVA streaks are easily cut off with a mounting knife, and their remains are also easily sanded clean.
  • The joint on the PVA can be separated by warming up properly with an ordinary household hair dryer. This is important if the high chair needs to be dismantled and put into storage until the next replenishment in the family. Also - if you need to replace its individual parts as the child grows, see below.

The very first chair

The most commonly used schemes for chairs for feeding children are as follows, in order of increasing manufacturing complexity:

  1. Stands / holders - boosters - for feeding the baby on an adult chair, hard and soft;
  2. Typical (classic) home folding high chairs;
  3. Children's sets-transformers and "growing" (for growth) chairs;
  4. Stationary chairs for feeding babies.

The latter are used either in children's institutions for the smallest, or in wealthy households with an excess of living space. In both cases, a high strength is required for a chair: many generations will use it in baby houses, and prestige is important for wealthy owners, and also design. As a result, a stationary chair for feeding children turns into a rather complex product, the manufacture of which requires special tools and production conditions; for an example, see the drawings in fig.

Boosters

These are attachments or devices for feeding a child on a chair and at a table for adults. Hard booster chairs (first 3 from left to right, pos. in the figure) save space in a small apartment, so they are quite popular.

However, it is impossible to make them fully comply with the requirements of children's ergonomics, this time. The second is for children from 6 to 9-12 months. they are of little use. Thirdly, soft attachments to an adult chair (leading manufacturers invest a lot of money in their development) do not give a full guarantee that the squishy fidget, delighted with his favorite juice, will not fall sideways with himself, a booster and dad's chair.

Much more practical are soft boosters for feeding babies, which are no longer chairs, but something like a kangaroo bag, on the right in the upper figure. You can’t use them constantly, there is a risk of spoiling the child’s posture. But at the dacha, picnic or on a trip, a feeding pocket - a booster is very useful, especially since it will hardly take up space in my mother's bag.

Making a soft booster for feeding a baby is already a more feminine thing, because. it is sewn; patterns are shown in fig; they are given without processing allowances.

Note: the slings are wound from the sides of the cape on the back of the chair from under the bottom, through the openings they are brought out and tied or fastened.

home classic

How the familiar folding highchair for feeding babies at home is arranged, and its dimensions are given in fig. Materials - timber 40x20, 75x20 (footboard and leg ties), 16x25 (back slats, seat apron, tabletop frame), board 100x20 (inserts into the frame of the front legs) and plywood 6-8 mm (seat, tabletop). Assembly, except for hinges - on confirmations (furniture screws) 60x6.

The connections marked in red are articulated: the table leans up, and the frame of the rear legs is pressed against the front ones. Bolt heads (M6-M8) from the inside and covered with plugs, red mark with an exclamation point. The seat is hung on the front support bar on card loops.

To fold the chair, the table is first raised and the frame of the rear legs is pulled back a little. Then the seat itself lowers, and the frame of the rear legs is fed forward to the stop - the chair is complicated. And when unfolded, all the kinematics of this chair is stopped without additional clamps according to the principle of a dead center, and let the little eater wriggle there as he wants - the chair under him will stand.

The only technological difficulty in the manufacture of this chair is the rallying of blanks for the sidewalls of the frame of the front legs on dowels (lamellas) in the mustache or dowels. But it can be bypassed by making the front frame plywood, see below. Its operational disadvantage is the thickness of more than 10 cm folded into a bag. For a pantry in a small apartment or a closet in the hallway, this can be too much. And here plywood comes to the rescue, see below.

Transformers and for growth

Children's chairs-transformers for all ages are on sale, 3 pos. on the left in Fig. They are really convenient and functional, but technologically complex: some of the necessary parts can only be made in the workshop at the factory. Accordingly, the cost of such chairs is quite high.

To repeat with your own hands, a kit is more accessible - a chair with a table, on the right in fig. What many do, but it immediately turns out that a set with a shift table takes up more space in the apartment than a high chair and a table separately.

But the main thing is that this building is unhygienic. When the child sits down at the table, the edge of the large tabletop closest to the floor in the feeding position will be under his arms in the literal sense. And also - the undersides of the legs in the position of 6-12 months, which have now become legs, and even uncomfortable protruding upwards.

There are no materials that do not scratch and do not give microcracks. It is impossible to remove stubborn dust from the floor from them, which is what microbes need. Changeling kits for young children have been on sale relatively recently, but cases have already been noted when they became foci of infection. From self-made from wood, the danger is only exacerbated.

The epidemic of fashion for transformable furniture (in this case, you can’t say otherwise) has given rise to real monsters in general, see fig. on right. When the child reaches the “table” age, the chair is simply ... sawn off, and the former supporting pyramid turns over and becomes a table. With the hygiene of a large countertop, everything is clear, see above. As with a too narrow table for feeding: there will be no food on the mother and on the floor, only if a specially programmed robot sits on the chair.

And yet, firstly, put yourself in the place of a child: there is a rigid fence on all sides. It remains, as they say, only to put on a chain. Secondly, a large table will be unusually rolled. Well, have you ever seen tables for adults, neat people, whose legs converge downwards? It’s funny, of course, but whoever starts this at home will probably not be laughing.

"Growing" chairs

In general, if we are talking about a small child, it is better not to experiment with transformable furniture, excluding proven folding designs. For example, let's take "growing" chairs, see fig. left. It’s really possible to sit on this from a fool to his dad, but it won’t be quite comfortable at any age. And in order to adapt the chair to outgrowth for feeding, it will have to be turned into a product comparable in complexity to a stationary chair for babies.

How to take everything from plywood

Highchairs for babies are very often made of plywood. Many homemade designs turn out to be quite practical and good looking, on the left in fig. However, after the need has passed, it is hardly possible to adapt them for something else, the first. The second - see on the right in fig. scattered details. Waste of material - at least 60% by eye Although good plywood can be bought for 300 rubles / sheet 1550x1550, anyway, it would be desirable to do without now useless curved scraps.

Here is the time to realize that an adult folding plywood chair-board is easily adapted for feeding a baby, see next. rice. Dad's for fishing or mom's garden, depending on who is in charge in the family. In terms of sanitation and hygiene, it is better, of course, to make this chair immediately for a small one, and let it go for adult use when it grows up.

From the remainder of cutting opening A, you will get 2 struts of a table for a child with L-shaped paws; grooves will need to be cut out under them in the sidewalls of the chair. For feeding a child, it is desirable to supplement such a chair with a fabric back: it will not reduce the comfort for adults, and it will not interfere with the chair hanging on the wall when folded. A small tabletop is attached to the struts on piano or card hinges, then the feeding table will also fold into a compact package.

Note: it is better to measure the dimensions of the struts according to a ready-made unfolded chair. This will be easier and more accurate than fiddling with trigonometry.

Another folding chair of the same type is shown in fig. on right. It is smaller, 500x750 when folded. It’s not bad that exactly 6 of these come out of a sheet of plywood 1550x1550, and the length fits into the trunk of almost any car. The letter w indicates the width of the cut. In general, look at your child, yourself and your needs.

Older chairs

At the age of about a year old, the child will already need a high chair, on which he can sit down, move it, rearrange it. Chairs for young children in the age category following babies are play (on the left in the figure below) and work / for classes, in the center. Working chairs for babies differ from play chairs primarily in armrests; they are necessary for the child to have the correct posture. Then, the seat height of the work chair can be immediately taken based on the oldest of the preschool ages, i.e. up to 400 mm. In this case, a footboard is needed; preferably changeable. The approximate dimensions of the highchair for babies of the "second stage" are given on the right, but, as mentioned above, they need to be specified according to the child.

Drawings of chairs for grown children are given on the next. rice. On the left - the game's simplest design. Legs of optimal length for a child of 12-36 months who often plays on the floor. Fasteners - wood screws 40x4.2.

Highchair for a child “like adults”

The chair on the right is already more complicated, its parts need to be marked on a grid and grooves should be cut to connect them. But it is universal, playful and working. Small protrusions of the sidewalls above the seat are enough so that a normally active child does not sit down, hanging half of the fifth point in the air. The seat height of 400 mm is the maximum for very young children. It can be made at first minimal, approx. 220 mm, and then change the sidewalls as they grow; it will take a little work and plywood, but mom will have something to say to dad on occasion. So, if dad is prudent, it’s better to immediately cut the sidewalls into outgrowth.

Such a chair, in principle, is simply assembled, like a puzzle. In the mobile version, say, for trips to the country, you can leave it like that. But with constant use, the chair will soon loosen, no matter how tight the joints are initially. Therefore, it is better for a child of this kind to glue PVA home chair. Dismantling if necessary put in storage - see above, about glue.

Finally, there is a category of children who, having barely realized themselves in this world, want everything to be like an adult. This is generally a useful quality, but dad will have to work harder on the chair and other furniture for the child. The device and dimensions of the highchair "as in adults" are shown in fig. on right. A wooden chair of this design will require rather complex technological methods, but even in this case plywood will come to the rescue, see next. chapter.

Video: an example of a simple do-it-yourself mini-chair

Technology and plywood

To make a high chair, kids need to know or have to learn how to make some carpentry joints: on dowels, with the help of dowels (lamellas) and a tenon-groove. How they are made, for examples of carpentry, see the videos, arranged in order of increasing complexity:

Video #1: dowel connections

Video #2: Doweled gusset for frame structures (corner mitering)

Video #3: tongue and groove joint

Video #4: Keyed Straight Joint for Plank Board Ratcheting

As you can see, at home with a simple hand tool, only pos. #one. Pos. # 2 and # 3 for a novice carpenter will turn out manually with sin in half, and for pos. #4 and a good professional cannot do without a workshop and special equipment. And now - ts-s! - all this can be done at home by a “full kettle”, using only a jigsaw and a little chisel. If the blanks of parts are assembled on glue from 3 layers of plywood with a thickness, respectively, in 1/3 of the required one. Among other things, this technology makes it possible to assemble complex-shaped parts from small-sized fragments, which makes it possible to denser, i.e. economically, cut the material.

How direct and angular tongue-and-groove joints are performed in this way is shown in pos. 1 and 2 fig. resp. If the spike is made trapezoidal with rounded corners, then the strength of the joint will increase several times, i.e. will be sufficient for adult furniture. In production, this technology is not used - it is tedious and therefore unprofitable, but at home it’s better than buying or renting a machine for 60-100 thousand rubles.

To glue a package of blanks into a PVA part, you also do not need any special devices:

  • Lay plastic wrap on a flat floor or table.
  • Both glued surfaces are lubricated with a thin layer of glue; better to use a brush.
  • Withstand adhesive layers until semi-dry tack, when the adhesive film begins to become translucent at the edges.
  • Fold the blanks into a bag and press.
  • The package is covered with another layer of film and oppression is placed on it from dispersed cargo (books, for example) at the rate of at least 20 kg per 1 sq. m of glued area.

Note: because the workpieces in the bag during gluing may “float away” a little, they need to be cut with an allowance of 1-2 mm for finishing.

Angled tongue-and-groove joint must be reinforced with self-tapping screws with a diameter of not more than 0.5 of the thickness of the stud, a pair per stud. For example, if a part is 15 mm thick from 3 layers of 5 mm each, then the diameter of the hardware is 2-2.5 mm. Glue is applied to the spike and into the groove; the first is introduced into the latter, as soon as the glue begins to peel off (after 2-3 minutes), and then the connection is pulled together with hardware.

How to screw screws

In the above and all other cases of fastening parts with self-tapping screws, it is necessary to pre-drill blind holes with a diameter into the body (rod) of a self-tapping screw without thread and a depth of 2/3 of the length of its threaded part. Also, a hole is pre-selected for the head of the self-tapping screw. After screwing, the head is covered with putty from sawdust of the same plywood on the same PVA; in 1 volume of glue, you can enter up to 2.5-3 volumes of sawdust.

Finally

Well, now on a new thing - new experiences and bon appetit. Just don’t throw porridge for joy, your parents tried hard.
