Do-it-yourself wooden box made of slats. How to make a wooden tool box

We are very rarely worried about things and objects that we are forced to use at home, at their summer cottage or in the office. We decided together with you to think about an ordinary wooden box. You can store different things in it, make a beautiful flower pot, a box for letters and correspondence out of it. We look at a photo of a wooden box for different purposes and tasks.

At a manufacturing enterprise, such a container is indispensable as a container, we will talk about the advantages a little later. The most important question that arises: "How to make a wooden box?" To make it, use chipboard, plywood and pine lath.

Today we will start making ordinary wooden boxes with our own hands from wood for correspondence or summer cottages. No special materials and tools are needed here, a standard home kit is sufficient.

Advantages and disadvantages of a wooden box:

  • It weighs less than metal containers;
  • Only natural material is used;
  • Simple assembly of the structure, elementary elements;
  • Strength is higher than ordinary cardboard and parchment;
  • Low purchase cost of the material, wide distribution;
  • With proper surface treatment, the service life increases.

Benefits of using a wooden box:

  • Increased weight of transported things;
  • A tree treated with an antiseptic lasts a long time.

Ways to use a wooden box:

  • In domestic conditions for storage of vegetables, fruit and products.
  • Souvenir packaging for a gift.
  • Packaging of expensive instruments and equipment.

Attention! When making a box for a specific product or product, its dimensions and weight should be taken into account. Toy boxes have standard sizes and specifications.

Required tools and equipment

Before embarking on a wooden box project, it is required to gather all the tools and equipment in one place.

We will need a woodworking machine, there must be a jointer and a circular saw. Otherwise, we buy the strips we need in the store - size and thickness. You can not do without a pencil, tape measure, building angle and hammer.

We will use the machine for raw wooden blanks, which we will make from a board of 2.5 x 25 x 150 cm.

Instructions for making a wooden box

We take a circular saw and cut it into the wooden elements we need in size, we get edged pieces. First, we cut along the edges, then set it to a width of 20 cm and saw it completely.

Be sure to wear safety goggles while working. It is better if you have a good partner holding the sawn boards.

Having installed the carriage at an angle of 90 degrees, we cut the board into 5 segments, 4 of which are 20 cm, and one more is 24 cm.

Set the planer parameters at a height of 1 mm and process each of the blanks from all sides to get draft versions of the board. For finishing work, the height value should be set to 0.5 mm. The thickness of the finished boards should be 2 cm. We will get boards 2 x 20 x 20 cm.

It is not required to polish the workpiece to a shine, the box will be used to store vegetables and fruits. Tool boxes are made according to the same principle.

We cut the remaining blanks in a width of 4.5 cm, taking into account the direction of the fibers. If you want to make the box ventilated, there will be 3 additional blanks in stock.

Wooden box assembly

The whole assembly process is very simple, no tricks and hidden mysteries. We take the most common nails 5 by 0.15 cm. Why thin nails? So that the structure is tightly fastened and the boards do not crack.

First, we nail the upper and lower planks from the end, then place the remaining wooden blanks. From below we fasten planks 24 cm long to the wooden base, use 35 mm self-tapping screws.

Drawings and dimensions of wooden boxes are presented below.

Wooden box as a flower pot

By its properties and qualities, wood is a versatile material, it can be used to make boxes where we will place our plants.

In the last example, we have already figured out that the tree is very easily processed to a fine state, you can remove absolutely all the bumps and make the surface perfectly smooth. Special skills and abilities are not required for this.

Below we offer to get acquainted with the options for boxes that you can make yourself without any skills with your own hands. The shape and appearance of the structure will depend on your personal imagination.

You can not use an electric tool at all when working with wood, saving a certain amount of money, but much more time will be lost, keep this in mind. With a set of all tools, you will get exactly what was planned in the shortest possible time without making almost any effort.

Be sure to stock up on paint and antiseptic to cover the surface of finished products.

If the box was originally planned for planting flowers, then you can first purchase ordinary plastic pots where flowers will be planted or plant them directly in the box. If you are going to plant in a box, do not forget to spread a film of polyethylene and make holes for drainage.

Photo of wooden boxes with your own hands

Very often when I pass fruit markets after a trading day, I see many discarded crates made from beech slats. There are so many of them, and the tree is valuable and decorative, and I have a question: what is so interesting and useful that you can make from these slats with your own hands. And you can make, for example, such a box for linen, which, in addition to its functionality, is an interior decoration. Several drawers, as if casually placed on top of each other with beautiful little things inside, will create a unique style and comfort in your bedroom.

The box itself is assembled quite simply from wooden slats and bars:

The walls of the box are made like this: slats are nailed onto two bars. The edges are aligned so that not a single rail extends beyond the bar:

Thus, we knock together two platform walls. We connect them with planks:

We do not make the corner into the overlay, but leave a small gap and slightly round the ends so as not to hit sharp corners:

Thin plywood will go to the bottom. We either nail it or glue it with PVA glue (you can do both).

When the box is ready, we drill holes for ventilation, since such boxes are stacked on top of each other:

To decorate our laundry box, you can use different options for impregnation and tinting to your taste:

Handles can be made from ordinary rope, it is very decorative:

By the same principle, by the way, you can make boxes for toys in the children's room.

The main advantage of a wooden flower box is the variability of solutions: you can do it yourself from the remnants of building materials, moreover, the dimensions and shape will be determined only by specific needs. Such compositions are extremely cheap, and with a skillful approach, they are in no way inferior to other decorative elements of landscape design.

The key advantage of the solution is the extremely low cost, and the possibility of creating a unique composition that is fully consistent with the interior or landscape design is also pleasing. The special structure of wood helps to maintain an optimal microclimate for plants, with a skillful approach, you can use the natural beauty and fibrous nature of the material.

All the shortcomings of such boxes are due to the susceptibility of wood to decay and biological damage. If you want to plant plants directly in a container, you need to take care of protecting the boards from contact with moisture and soil substrate. When used outdoors, wood is relatively short-lived, so it needs protective impregnations and paintwork.

What materials and tools will be needed for manufacturing?

To make a wooden flower box with your own hands, you need to prepare the following basic tools:

  • electric jigsaw or saw;
  • grinder;
  • forceps;
  • roulette with a square;
  • plane;
  • screwdriver;
  • a hammer.

The design of the future box is selected in accordance with the equipment present: if all manipulations are to be performed manually, it is better to give preference to the simplest form. The presence of power tools allows, in turn, to realize any design ideas.

As base materials you can use:

  • slats and boards with a thickness of at least 1 cm;
  • cutting OSB;
  • plywood sheets, including those having reuse.

Subsequent surface treatment will be carried out with the help of an antiseptic, a variety of paints and varnishes, stains. Nails, waterproof glue, self-tapping screws are suitable for connecting parts.

Manufacturing technology of a simple street model

In its most primitive form, the work is carried out in the following steps:

  1. Boards, the width of which varies between 15-20 cm, are cut into blanks. Three long pieces will be needed to complete the bottom and sides, the ends will be decorated with two short ones (here, allowances equal to the thickness should be left on three sides).
  2. The boards are planed with a planer, they can be sanded with coarse-grained sandpaper, the sections must be carefully processed.
  3. Thin holes are made along the edges of the blanks: in the side parts - 3 each, in the end parts - 4 each.
  4. With the help of screws, the sides and the bottom are first fixed, then the end blanks are attached.
  5. The assembled structure is polished with fine emery.

All surfaces must be thoroughly impregnated with an antiseptic, varnish, stain or enamel can be applied on the outside.

Used cargo pallets are often used as the base material, this is a very cheap raw material that is easy to process. Instructions for assembling an outdoor flower box:

  • the pallet must be disassembled with a nail puller; tongs will be needed to remove the fasteners;
  • rotten and damaged boards are rejected;
  • an approximate sketch of the box is drawn up indicating the planned dimensions;
  • in accordance with the notes, wood is sawn, cleaned using sandpaper;
  • assembly begins with fixing the lower base and upper frame;
  • side faces are attached to two parts of the container with nails;
  • joints are masked by narrow decorative strips.

Here also the final stage is the application of protective and paint compositions.

If necessary, legs made of beams can be nailed to the container, with their help, full ventilation of the lower edge is ensured. Flowers can be placed inside in pots or planted directly in a container. In the second case, it is necessary to cover the box with foil and equip it with drainage holes.

Decoration options

Miniature flower boxes made of wood are in great demand, in which vegetation directly serves as a decor: hanging stems and long leaves form a single composition in which greenery predominates.

Craftsmen decorate wood boxes with saw cuts (that is, with what remains after work), thin boards in the manner of a picket fence and figured thick trimmings of branches, peeled from bark and varnished.

Those who have the skills of figured woodcarving will not find it difficult to make beautiful containers for flowers that imitate toolboxes, baskets, ships, and interior items in shape. There are no restrictions here - you can draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape design.

If you plan to use decorative boxes indoors, to create a single stylistic composition, you should pay attention to the possibilities of decoupage. Paints, brushes, glue and special napkins will help you easily transform any container, create a design element of the interior on its basis.

For those who do not like to overload the perception, we can recommend the monochrome design of the tree - for example, paint it in a bleached gray, lilac, blue or light green shade. Such pastel notes look juicy, but at the same time restrained.

Products can be floor and suspended. Variations mounted on high legs are widespread: they allow you to care for plants without squatting, which greatly simplifies all manipulations. To assemble wall models, you will need special holders: when choosing them, you must take into account the potential weight of the structure filled with soil and flowers.

Boxes hung outside the window are in fashion - they are fixed on the outside of the window sill with the help of special strong loop-like fasteners. Figured products, polished or stained, look especially impressive.

Who would have thought that wooden pallets are such a valuable resource! From these boxes you can make a lot of useful things that will be useful to us in everyday life. Our editors will tell you how to make strawberry growing box. To implement this idea, you only need one pallet.

Before reworking an old pallet, inspect its markings. It turns out that some wooden pallets cannot be used for horticultural purposes. If the stamp has the letters MB, it means that the pallet has been treated with insecticides. The letters HT mean heat treatment, such pallets can be safely used for growing plants.

Drawer drawing, assembly and storage scheme.

For the manufacture of the box, we will prepare materials and fasteners:
- wooden plank 5x50x400 mm, pcs - 8;
- wooden plank 5x50x490 mm, pcs - 12;
- a wooden block of triangular section 50x50x199 mm, pcs - 4;
- metal building staples for a stapler (form "P", 0.75 mm thick, 11.4 mm wide, 14 mm high).

We start the assembly with the side planks

Side planks, with the help of a staple gun, are nailed with staples to wooden blocks of triangular section. Nailed planks along the contour should protrude 5 mm beyond the ends of the triangular bars.

We lay six boards on the bottom of the box at a distance of 18 mm from each other.

Along the edges of the stacked boards, we lay two transverse boards, nail the longitudinal boards to the transverse boards and get the bottom of the box.

We nail the bottom of the box from below to the ends of the triangular bars and to the bottom boards along the perimeter.

At a distance of 18 mm from each other, we nail the rest of the planks to the triangular bars.

Our box is ready.

Made boxes are well stored with each other and on top of each other. At the same time, air space is maintained between the boxes, which creates good ventilation for our vegetables and fruits. In the assembled boxes it is convenient to store and also transport the grown products in the garden and vegetable garden.
