Make boards for drawing with chalk. DIY chalkboard

It is very easy to make such a wall in an ordinary apartment. Now on sale there is a special slate paint, which creates a matte surface for drawing with chalk.

Perhaps the most common is from the well-known brand Tikkurila. Available in black and dark green color with a volume of 1 liter. The cost is about 900-1000 rubles per jar.

A similar paint is also produced by the brands "Rust Oleum", "Krylon", "Benjamin Moore". I am sure you can easily find one of these options in the nearest large building materials store. Such paints are called "chalkboard paint" or "paint for school boards"

The paint is applied in 2 layers on a thoroughly cleaned surface, after which it is necessary to wait for it to dry completely (follow the instructions on the package). As a result, you get a beautiful matte finish that looks great on its own, and if you show your imagination, you can create a real work of art throughout the wall, which will become the main focus of your interior.

The surface covered with slate paint is not scratched when drawing with crayons, it can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth.

These are the options for using slate paint that I especially liked:

Chalkboard in the kitchen

Write down a shopping list or a recipe you like, leave a message to your loved ones and wish them a good day - a slate wall is very relevant in the kitchen.

If desired, you can apply slate paint even on the surface of the refrigerator or kitchen cabinets:

If you don't want to use the whole wall for chalk drawing, you can paint only a part of the wall, a column, or use a mobile whiteboard, which is also easy to make yourself:

Slate wall behind the desk

Such coverage is very relevant for. Students and schoolchildren, creative people and just everyone who wants to be able to have important information before their eyes will appreciate it.

Another great idea is to use slate paint to create diaries and note boards.

Why not? This is perhaps the easiest way to make changes to your interior on a regular basis. Change patterns and colors and every week you will sleep in a new bedroom.

Wall for drawing with crayons in the nursery

And, of course, children will become the most grateful users of the slate wall! It may not be very practical, but having such a wall in the house will constantly develop your kid's creativity and make his life much more exciting. At the same time, it is desirable that the rest of the colors remain light so that the room does not turn out too gloomy.

To create an original gallery, you can combine drawings and inscriptions with empty frames, photographs and posters. About how beautifully and evenly to hang pictures and photos on the wall, I wrote and.

I hope you have some new ideas for creating a creative slate wall in your home.

It is not always convenient to leave messages on a smartphone. For example, the mother left for work before the child woke up to go to school. And he has to give something. A text message can wake up a baby even if the smartphone is on vibration. And later, the mother risks forgetting to convey the message to her child. In this article, we will look at options for making slate reminder boards with your own hands, with which you can easily leave short messages to each other.

Variety of options

Many people prefer to use ordinary black paints, flavored with powder for grouting tile joints, to create slate boards. But few people know that special slate compositions are sold in stores. They are intended for painting surfaces on which they will later write with chalk. Their cost, as a rule, is quite high, but there is less fuss with the preparation of artisanal slate paint.

The same should be said about paints with magnetic properties. If you want to make a magnetic slate board, on which, if desired, you can hang a funny magnet, then they will come in handy for you.

The plane itself can be of any shape. To create small boards, you can use dense multi-layer plywood; for more bulky, a thick sheet or OSB board is suitable. If the household has a jigsaw, you can cut any blanks for boards from a piece of plywood. For example, a slate for a refrigerator can be in the form of a cloud, a polyhedral star, or a simple oval. Subsequently, the product can be enclosed in a frame, like a real picture, or you can equip it with a stand and make it desktop.

Making a board with acrylic paint

  • a blank cut from plywood, sanded and sanded along the edges with sandpaper or a simple cutting board;
  • black glossy acrylic paint;
  • powder for grouting tile joints;
  • small medium hard brush for painting;
  • container for the preparation of slate paint.

The surface painted with glossy paint will be perfectly flat. It is useless to write with chalk on such a board, since the chalk fractions will simply have nothing to cling to. The block will slide across the board without leaving a trace. That is why the paint should be roughened, and in this case, the process of making a slate board begins with the preparation of a special paint. So, let's get started:

  1. Pour the amount of paint necessary to cover the surface of the workpiece into the prepared container, and mix it with the grouting powder in the proportions: part of the powder to one and a half parts of the paint (by volume). Then mix all the ingredients thoroughly. The paint is ready.
  2. Let's start painting. We apply the composition quickly, since the paint mixed with the powder dries up instantly, and stains may remain on the surface of the future slate board.
  3. Let dry thoroughly and test. Chalk adheres well to matte and slightly rough surfaces, the inscriptions are clear and durable. The resulting board, when properly painted, is in no way inferior to the store.

Matte acrylic paint for work

Here everything happens in the same order and in the same way as in the previous version, except that no grouting powder is needed. Matte acrylic paint itself has all the properties of slate. Chalk clings to it perfectly, and therefore you can immediately start painting.

After hardening, you will get the same wonderful board as in the first case. We make a couple of holes with a drill, thread a rope, tie it in a knot and hang it on a hook on the wall. The slate board is ready to use.

Making a board with slate paint

The fastest and easiest way to make a slate chalk board is with a special slate paint. The composition initially has all the necessary properties, and if you purchase it in a special can, then even a brush or roller is not needed for application.

Just apply a layer of slate paint to the sanded surface of the workpiece and let it dry. If the layer of paint did not suit you, and the wood absorbed it with excessive zeal, after it dries, you can apply another layer again. After the final drying, the board will be ready for use.

Production with special paints

There are many paints intended for the manufacture of slate boards, but you can not buy them everywhere. If desired, you can order online or purchase in specialized stores.

In this case, the following materials will be required:

  • cleaned wooden blank-base;
  • a jar of primer on wood;
  • slate paint (depending on preference or circumstances, this can be a special slate paint, matte acrylic or a mixture of glossy acrylic paint with grout powder);
  • brushes of medium hardness or small rollers for painting.

How to make a whiteboard with magnetic paint

The procedure in this case is as follows:

  1. So that expensive magnetic paint does not soak into the wood, losing its properties, or, conversely, so that its layers do not fall off the wood along with the magnets, a primer layer is initially applied to the base.
  2. After the primer dries, an even layer of magnetic paint is applied to it.
  3. And only when, in turn, the layer of magnetic paint dries up, a layer of slate paint is applied to it.

After complete drying, on such a board it will be possible not only to write with chalk, but also to place various funny magnets.

We use galvanized steel

The process of creating magnetic slate boards based on galvanized steel sheets is more laborious. And a set of tools with consumables here will need much more impressive. In particular, for the forthcoming work it is necessary to prepare:

  • galvanized sheet;
  • a sheet of thick plywood (or OSB);
  • scissors for cutting tin;
  • Double-sided tape;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • primer for metal;
  • slate paint (any of the above);
  • brushes or rollers for applying primer and paint;
  • plastic decorative corner.

The process of manufacturing magnetic slate boards based on galvanized

Production begins with the choice of sizes and other figurative features of the future board. When we have decided on the size and shape, we proceed directly to the process.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. The future base is cut out of a sheet of thick plywood (OSB).
  2. Galvanization is cut according to the same dimensions.
  3. Double-sided tape is glued in frequent stripes to the front side of the wood base.
  4. A galvanized sheet cut to the size of the base is applied to the strips of adhesive tape, after which it is carefully pressed for a good grip.
  5. After the galvanizing is glued to the wooden base, you can start applying the primer to the galvanizing.
  6. After the primer has hardened, a layer of slate paint is applied on top of it.
  7. Wait for the slate paint to dry. Then you can start framing the future board into a frame from a decorative plastic corner.

After that, it remains only to equip the product with brackets of your choice. In specialized stores they are not counted. There are just hanging ones, there are with a changing angle of inclination, there are revolving from side to side. Agree, such a magnetic slate board on the wall, the photo of which is presented in this material, will look great in any interior.

Equipping the product with lighting

To make the slate board more elegant and aesthetic, you can frame it around the perimeter with an LED strip hidden in the groove of the wooden corner of the intricate frame. Also, the original frame can be made from the same decorative plastic corner, purchased 5 mm wider than the size of the wooden base. It must be fixed on the curb of the wooden base with an overlap, and place the LED strip in the resulting groove between the front side of the corner and the edge of the board surface.

Such a slate board will surely become the subject of your special pride. Firstly, you made it with your own hands, and secondly, you also achieved that it looks no worse than a store-bought one, plus it is equipped with a backlight functionality that expensive factory models do not have. It will not only faithfully serve you in accordance with its intended purpose, but will also become an excellent kind of lamp that can perfectly decorate any interior.

For a family with children, this is also an indispensable entertainment and your wallpaper will remain intact. Chalk boards are used to decorate parties and birthdays, adults also like to draw on it and leave wishes.

You can buy such a board ready-made and it costs from 10 to 100 dollars, but why? If you can simply make a chalkboard at home from any base and acrylic paint.

  • If you add any abrasive material to the paint, for example, gypsum, grout, cement - just its elements will make ordinary acrylic paint suitable for painting on it.
  • We offer the easiest master class for making such paint using alabaster and black acrylic.

Choice of base for the board

You can choose absolutely any basis, it can be:

  • Any plywood
  • Any piece of board, countertop or piece of old face
  • Mirror glass or
  • Cardboard - disassemble the old cardboard box and the base is ready

Master class: how to make a board for drawing with chalk

The fastest easy way to make a board is to use any cardboard as a basis, it does not need to be processed before painting. In addition, having trained on it, you can already move to large surfaces.

Ingredients and Tools

  • 2 tablespoons alabaster
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 3 tablespoons black acrylic paint
  • cardboard
  • tassel
  • dry rag and chalk

Manufacturing process

  1. We take alabaster and water in a ratio of 1 to 2, mix and rub the lumps well until a uniform thick mixture is obtained.
  2. Pour the paint into the container. Paint should be 3 times more than alabaster. We introduce the prepared mixture of alabaster and water into the paint and mix thoroughly so that no lumps remain.
  3. If it’s not a pity and there is a technical nozzle, then you can do this with a mixer. So faster and more reliable. But if you stir with a spoon, not for long either - lumps will disperse in 2-3 minutes.

If the mixture is too thick, add a little more water, since acrylic paints from different manufacturers have different densities.

For durability, apply 3 coats of paint to the chalkboard. Let the paint dry completely between coats. After the third layer is dry, it is recommended to rub with chalk over the entire surface in order to harden it and then wipe the chalk with a dry towel.

TIP: Cardboard may sag slightly after paint is applied, but it will straighten out as soon as it dries.

Insert the cardboard into any frame from a photo or a picture and your board is ready!

Instruction

Some firms have special compositions for covering school boards, but in practice finding them on sale is a great luck. They are used most often to mask scratches, and therefore are sold in small volumes, while the price is disproportionately high. Therefore, it is preferable to purchase a finished board or make a coating for it yourself. You can find recipes that mix enamels and building cement. Such a coating turns out to be very rough, it takes a very long time to dry, and an unpleasant smell excludes the use of the composition in the apartment. Acrylic practically does not smell and dries very quickly, so it is recommended to use it, but as an additional element, take not cement, but gypsum or tile grout based on it.

Almost any material is suitable for making boards: thick cardboard, plywood, boards, even laminate or some types of plastic. When choosing a material, it should be remembered that paint on surfaces such as plastic, metal or plexiglass does not adhere very well. If possible, another material should be chosen, and if, nevertheless, a decision is made to use plexiglass, metal or plastic, the surface is ground and coated with a primer, only after that it is possible to apply the composition for the manufacture of a chalkboard.

When working, you should take care of safety, namely, work only in a well-ventilated area. When acrylic is combined with grout, an unpleasant odor most often appears. The mixture dries very quickly, so before you start painting, you need to protect all surfaces that the paint can get on, and use the diluted mixture all at once. The grout should be at least 1/5 of the amount of paint, it is better to choose it in color as close as possible to the planned shade of the chalkboard. If you take white gypsum, the color will not be as saturated as a result, instead of black, it may turn out to be gray. The mixture should be stirred quickly and thoroughly to form as few lumps as possible.

When painting, most often one layer is not enough, it is better to paint in 2-3 layers so that the surface does not shine through the paint. Grains of the mixture are removed until the board is dry. To make the coating uniform, alternate layers with vertical and horizontal strokes, allowing the previous layer to dry before applying the next. When the last layer is completed and dried, the board is carefully rubbed with chalk and rubbed with a hard dry cloth, grinding. Whenever possible, soft chalk should be used for drawing so as not to scratch the surface. You can wash the chalk with a dry cloth or sponge, occasionally you can use a damp cloth to clean the field.

Good afternoon - today we will talk about slate boards. But not about school, but about kitchen chalkboards. Those on which we write with chalk reminders to ourselves ... notes for our neighbors ... outlines of recipes ... and just funny phrases for a good mood.

I will not only show you the designs of slate surfaces in the kitchen. I will tell you where to buy slate paint and how much it costs. I'll tell you how make your own slate paint from ordinary shop paint. And I will also tell you how to make such slate boards at home - and what they can be.

So let's start with a photo... and slowly work our way up to the tutorial on how to make chalk paint.

Slate apron - over the sink in the kitchen.

These aprons in the kitchen can be made by covering the wall with special slate paint.

Or buy a slate coating in the form of a film and paste over the apron area in the kitchen with it.

In stores you can find slate paint. In another way, it is also popularly called chalk paint. This paint creates a rough staining surface on which the chalk easily leaves marks, and does not slip, as with ordinary paints. Below I will tell you how to make slate paint with your own hands from simple building paint (for walls or floors) and reveal a simple secret to getting a slate effect.

And for those who love ready-made store solutions for their tasks, here is the answer.

For example, TIKKURILA paint. One liter is enough for 9-12 square meters. m. surface (consumption depends on the porosity of the wall). It can be applied with a brush or by spraying from a spray can.

The same company has paint Magnetic– it creates magnetic surfaces. We paint the wall in this paint, and we no longer need to glue children's drawings with adhesive tape to the wall: everything can be attached to magnets.

And many other companiesalso produce SLIDE and MAGNETIC paints of all colors– including in aerosol cans. Such spray cans are convenient if you want to paint complex streamlined surfaces with slate paint - for example, a refrigerator.

And if chalk paint is applied over 2 layers of magnetic paint- you will get a slate surface that will hold the magnets. This is great.

Chalk walls in the kitchen - how to work with slate paint.

HOW TO APPLY SLIDE CHALK PAINT to a wall

  1. Preparing the wall. We remove wallpaper, or the remnants of old paint. We clean the wall with a rough brush ... we close up the irregularities with putty. We grind with sandpaper (sandpaper) No. 100 - 150, remove dust from grinding with a brush.
  2. We cover the wall with a preparatory layer of primer for painting.
  3. Open a can of slate chalk paint. Thoroughly mix it (because the paint contains a finely dispersed powder and it could settle to the bottom during storage).
  4. We apply a layer of paint ... constantly stirring it and during the application ... let the layer dry and apply another.

Chalk wall can be made in every corner of the kitchen. Not necessarily over the sink. You can choose a place over the kitchen sofa.

Children will enjoy crawling on the sofa and drawing cute pictures ... tigers that look like cats ... police cars ... shaggy hedgehogs ... pears with worms ... dear mom ... and an apple pie that she bakes.

On such chalk walls can be placed.
