Sometimes the interior of the home begins to seem boring and pretty fed up. You can solve this problem by starting a major renovation, purchasing new furniture, or at least moving the old one from its usual place to a new one. But a little time passes, and again I want something new, but there is no desire to invest in updating the environment. In such cases, you can slightly change the appearance of old furniture: do the table decor with your own hands, repaint it, paint it or lay it out with mosaics. Even such an insignificant alteration that does not require investment of money will bring a fresh touch to the decoration of the house and give positive emotions during and after work.

A coffee table with monochrome photos and drawings will stand out against the general background of the interior. Black and white colors with shades of silver will add mystery to it.

What will help restore the old table?

No matter how the table is decorated, before starting work, it is required to completely remove the old paintwork, which may have cracks, bubbles or chips. To apply a new decorative layer, the most even surface is required. Therefore, among the tools you will need different and slightly unexpected things:

spatulas (metal and rubber);
household sponge (made of metal fibers and foam rubber with a hard layer);
sandpaper;
toothbrush, needle or toothpicks;
nail polish remover;
wood glue;
putty, adhesive for ceramic tiles;
ruler, corner, pencil;
paints and varnishes;
brushes;
gloves, respirator

It will take some effort to remove the varnish from the surface of the table. The easiest way is to apply a special gel and remove the softened layer. It is convenient to remove varnish from the joints of parts with a hard toothbrush or a needle.

After removing the varnish, the surfaces are carefully treated with sandpaper or a steel sponge. To protect the lungs from inhalation of dust, you need to take care of purchasing a respirator in advance. The prepared table can be re-decorated in a variety of ways.

Simple ways to decorate the table

Using paint, wallpaper, ceramic tiles and glass, you can turn an old piece of furniture into a completely new thing. On fig. 1 shows do-it-yourself table decor options:

Bathroom makeover - vanity unit with built-in faucet and sink. To install the faucet and sink, holes are cut in which plumbing equipment is fixed according to the instructions for it. Additionally, the countertop is partially replaced with tiles. To do this, cut out a rectangle of the required size. A sheet of plywood or MDF is attached to the underside of the countertop. The resulting niche is filled with putty or tile adhesive, on which the tile is laid, aligning it flush with the surface of the countertop. After laying, the seams are rubbed with a grout mixture. Decorate the table.
To create a writing table, the prepared surface was covered with wallpaper, planted with glue for them. After drying, you can additionally treat the countertop with a transparent colorless varnish to protect the wallpaper from wear. Having ordered a cover from a sheet of glass in the store, the table is given the final look.
To make a striped coffee table, it is pre-painted in any light color (gray, beige, blue, etc.). After the paint has dried, masking tape is glued onto the countertop and sides, forming strips of arbitrary width. Paint the countertop between the adhesive tape, choosing colors to taste. The adhesive tape is removed, the dried table is covered with a transparent varnish layer. Using stencils, you can apply any other pattern on the countertop.
This decor of the old table is suitable for the kitchen: the tabletop will be covered with an ordinary oilcloth or self-adhesive film of any color. The frame of the table is painted in contrasting or matching colors with the film pattern. If an oilcloth is chosen for the upholstery, it should be spread on the countertop, the edges bent down and secured with a stapler, pulling the cover well. The corners must be carefully tucked in and secured.

Do-it-yourself mosaic tabletop

From pieces of ceramic tiles, colored glass or glassware fragments, you can create a real work of art on the tabletop designed for decorating the table. To do this, prepare the surface and paint it in a light color. After drying, apply any pattern to the countertop and, using special glue, lay out a mosaic of prepared multi-colored glass or ceramics. Multi-colored pebbles and saw cuts of wood can act as a material for mosaics. The choice depends on the purpose of the table and the interior in which it will be located (Fig. 2).

After the pattern is fully assembled and the adhesive has set, cover the entire surface of the mosaic with grout for tiles, carefully rubbing it with a rubber spatula into the gaps between the mosaic elements. Wipe the pattern with a sponge or cloth, without waiting for the grout to dry. Dry the finished mosaic for 4-5 hours and with a damp sponge, finally clean it of grout residues. To protect against moisture, cover the mosaic countertop with a transparent varnish.

In this case, the table frame can be painted in contrasting colors or matching the pattern, decorated with mosaics.

If you have an old dining table that you hold dear as a keepsake, or you just want to save money on buying new furniture, then you have an interesting job as a restorer or decorator.

Keep in mind that restoring a kitchen table with your own hands is not the easiest and, in some cases, not justified, because not every table can be repaired, and it is better to entrust antiques to professionals. But more often than not, the right "upgrade" can bring your old friend back to life and transform him beyond recognition.

How can the table be updated?

To update your kitchen table with your own hands, you can use one of the following proven technologies:

Traditional painting - this is the method we will consider in detail in a step-by-step master class.

An interesting way of decorating and painting furniture is coloring through tulle - a tabletop is painted through it, and a lace pattern is formed according to the principle of a stencil.

Ceramic tiles will allow you to decorate a dilapidated, badly damaged countertop and make it more practical - you can put hot on such a surface and wash it in any way.

You can update the old table using decoupage technique. We will also talk about it in more detail.

An easy way to modify the table with your own hands quickly and on a budget is to paste over it with a self-adhesive film.
Burning will renew an undamaged wood surface.

Master class - 6 steps on the way to a new life

In this simple DIY dining table restoration tutorial, we'll be updating, repairing and repainting this old veneered table with a moderate amount of imperfections.

So, to update the kitchen table you will need:

a grinder or sandpaper of coarse, medium and fine grit, as well as glasses, a respirator and gloves;
alkyd enamel paint of the desired color (or other desired coating, such as stain), as well as a flat non-shedding paint or art brush;
primer for wood and a small roller / brush for priming;
wax paste or varnish.

Step 1. Inspect and repair parts

We carefully examine all the fasteners in the structure and the defects of the countertop - how much the veneer has delaminated or the tree has been damaged.

If the table is a little loose, then you just need to tighten all the screws. If it requires a more serious restoration, then you need to completely disassemble the table, re-fasten all the parts, or clean and sand all the grooves and joints so that the new glue grabs better, fix the glued parts with clamps or self-tapping screws, and then remove them after 15 hours, when the glue is completely dry.

Sometimes the underframe needs to be replaced, not only because its parts are very dilapidated, but also because the legs can completely modify your old table. For example, if earlier the legs were simple, now you can replace them with beautiful carved balusters.
When disassembling furniture, do not forget to mark the installation location of each of the parts, so you will not get confused and quickly complete the task.

Step 2. Remove the old coating

Now put on goggles and prepare 2 types of sandpaper: coarse-grained for primary processing and fine-grained for smoothing. Get ready for a long and laborious job - removing old paint or varnish is not an easy task.

Step 3. We close up cracks and chips

After grinding, we carefully clean the table from dust, inspect the countertop and look for defects. Keep in mind that even the smallest damage will be visible after painting. All chips and cracks must be locally repaired with wood putty or polyester putty, and then sanded the entire surface again when the “patches” dry out.

Note - covering the table with stain:

if the countertop is not severely damaged, then you can not hide the natural beauty of the wood and cover it with stain, and then with varnish, shellac or wax. The photo below shows an example of a restored table with a stained oak top.

Step 4. Prime and sand again

We continue to work. Now we need not only to clean the table, but also to degrease it. And after the table dries, proceed to the primer. This stage is mandatory, because without it the paintwork will lie unevenly and quickly be damaged. You can use an alkyd or shellac wood primer. In this master class, the universal alkyd primer Zinsser Cover Stain (pictured below) was used, which dries in just 1 hour, protects the wood well and prepares it for painting. It costs about 500-600 rubles, but is not sold everywhere. The table can be primed in 1-2 coats with a small sponge roller, allowing each coat to dry completely.

When the primer is dry (1 day), sand the countertop again with sandpaper or a medium-grit sanding sponge to smooth the primed surface and prepare it for painting. And don't forget to put your respirator back on!

Step 5. Now let's start painting.

It is very important to choose the right paint and its color. Avoid cheap paints, because this is a dining table, which means that the countertop should be well tolerated by frequent washing, rubbing, bumps, etc. In this case, a premium water-based alkyd enamel paint with a satin finish is used, but you can choose a more environmentally friendly acrylic-based enamel. Also, choose a quality brush with passion so that it does not shed in the process. Not a paintbrush, but a large flat art brush is perfect.

The paint must be applied in 2 thin layers, while the finish layer is best left to dry for 3-4 days.

If you have chosen a dark color of paint, then it is better to apply it in 3 thin layers;
To create scuffs in the style, the paint can be sanded in some places, for example, on the ends of the table;
Also, to create the effect of "antique", the table can be patinated.

Step 6. Apply a protective coating

As we have already said, you can protect the surface of the table with a varnish, for example, a water-based matte polyurethane (in the photo on the left is an excellent varnish from Varathane). It should be applied evenly in 2-3 thin layers, lightly sanding each layer before applying the next layer of varnish. Of course, all layers must be completely dry before sanding (4 hours).

The second option is wax protection, which will make the countertop matte and can be rubbed to a shine. To do this, the wax should be gently rubbed with a cotton cloth into the wood, then allow the first coat to dry for at least 1 hour. After that, polish the surface in a circular motion, and repeat the procedure 2 more times within one day. Well, now be patient and leave the table for 1 week so that the surface acquires the necessary operational properties.

Well, that's all - the restoration is completed, and the old table has found a new life in trendy white.

Updating the countertop with decoupage

If you do not want to stop there or your table does not have serious damage, but just needs a little update, then you can decorate the table with drawings: paint it manually with acrylic paints, use stencils and stamps, or update the table with decoupage. Perhaps, it is this decor technique that is popular today that we will consider in more detail, because decoupage will not only allow you to quickly and budgetly transform the table or, for example, style it like Shabby chic (as in the photo below), but also hide some defects of the dilapidated surface.

To update the table with your own hands using the decoupage technique, you will need:

acrylic primer and acrylic paints - if desired;
putty for wood beige;
grinder and sandpaper of varying degrees of graininess;
rubber spatulas;
artistic flat and artificial brushes;
matte or semi-gloss varnish for wood;
napkins for decoupage or decoupage card;
scissors;
PVA glue or special glue for decoupage.

Decor using the decoupage technique can be started either after the stage of priming and polishing it (see step number 4 above), or after painting and varnishing. Then you should choose a picture - it can be any image on paper or table napkins, as well as special rice paper for decoupage.

First, markup is performed, lightly marking with a pencil the places where the images will be located. We put the cut out paper image “face down” in a container with water and hold for half a minute. Then the soaked image is laid out in the same way “face down” on a plastic file, and all excess paper layers are rolled off. Then the picture is carefully smeared with glue and attached to the countertop. The file is not removed - through it the image is smoothed as much as possible.

The surface around the pictures is decorated with paint. The final stage of decoupage is varnishing with acrylic varnish. After three days, the varnish will dry and the table can be fully used.

Pulling and pressing - smooth the film, avoiding the formation of bubbles. When gluing, it is better to use a soft towel to smooth the surface. Sticker options can be seen in the photo.

If you have an old wooden table that you want to update without extra material costs, this option is for you. Surely there are old plates in the house that have not been used for a long time, and throwing away is not a hand raised. Or the remnants of the tiles that remained after the repair, computer disks are also suitable - all this can come in handy in order to make table decor. The table that we will decorate will perfectly fit into any interior of an apartment, house, or cottage.

For work you will need:

Gold acrylic paint.
Plates, or tiles.
A hammer.
Sandpaper.
Glue for gluing tiles.
Grout for tiles.
Pencil and ruler.

We cover the floor with newspapers so as not to stain it in the process. We pass the sandpaper over the entire wooden table, wipe it with a damp sponge, and paint with acrylic paint. You can use a brush or a sponge.

We paint everything except the top part. We will decorate the countertops. This is the table we get after staining:

So we got to the plates. We lay more newspapers, take a hammer, and break the plates into small pieces.

We smear our countertop with tile glue, and lay out our fragments of plates. First around the edges.

Then we make the middle.

We overwrite the space between the fragments with a special tile grout, remove the remains of the grout with a dry cloth.

You can draw small fragments, drawings with golden paint, but not necessarily. That's it, the table is ready.

Another equally attractive type of decor is to make a table in a vintage spirit, using acrylic or chalk paint in different colors.

First of all, it must be said that painting, decorating a table with paint is an activity that needs to be done without fuss! When you start to rush, it is difficult to get a good result.

We decorate furniture with stencils. Stencils can be made from cardboard, plastic, transparent film. First, the drawing you like is transferred to paper, then transparent plastic is applied to the drawing, and the contours are outlined.

Next, with a blade or knife, cut out those parts that need to be painted over. Acrylic paint is recommended for working with a stencil: it dries quickly and is suitable for any surface. If the stencil is painted with a sponge, then it is better to make the first print on paper to remove excess paint. To work with a stencil, it is not necessary to take a large amount of paint to prevent it from flowing and smearing. If the stencil is worked with a brush, then paint is applied by stuffing, perpendicularly.

For work you will need:

Black acrylic paint.
Acrylic white paint.
Stencils.
Sandpaper.
Roller and brush.

We sand the table with sandpaper, paint it with black acrylic paint using a brush and a roller. We are waiting for it to dry.

We impose a stencil on the surface of the table, securing the edges of the stencil with adhesive tape so that the stencil does not move. We apply white acrylic paint with a roller, as in the photo. After 15 minutes, repeat the application. We are waiting for drying, and remove the stencil.

Here's what should happen. If somewhere the lines turned out to be not clear enough, we tint the lines with a thin brush.

We also use a stencil at the bottom.
