Yes, and so, there is, among other things, a technique for making stained glass, which is quite suitable for relatively small products with quite complex curved edges for mating glasses. The work can be done in a rather complex form. All this makes it possible to make beautiful lampshades - stained glass windows. The technique itself is called "Tiffany", after the name of the one who invented it and is now quite popular.

Generally speaking, the process consists in creating a stained-glass window pattern - “cardboard”. The contours of the individual elements are transferred to the corresponding glass colors and relatively roughly cut out with a glass cutter. After that, the edges of the glasses are ground and adjusted to each other on a special grinding machine with a diamond tool. Then, the edges of the glasses are pasted over with a thin copper foil with a sticky layer, the glasses are folded into a pattern and soldered. In essence, everything.

Generally speaking, any stained glass window looks best in transmitted light - when the light source is behind it, and in this sense, using it (stained glass) as a lampshade is an excellent idea. When using Tiffany's stained glass technique, the shape of the finished product can be quite bizarre, but getting a hemisphere or a shape close to it, more or less normal in size, is not at all difficult. You just have to take care of a convenient form for work in advance. It is convenient to cut stained glass elements with a special glass cutter for curvilinear cuts - its head is much narrower, it is more convenient to work with. Here, you can also include a good thin felt-tip pen, drawing on glass with a thin rod, it is important that its trace is not washed off with water (on a grinder). Of the usual tools, you will need scissors, to sweep away the glass crumbs formed when cutting and biting off glass, a wide paint brush with a tin box came in handy. You need access to a computer with a color printer. To fix the finished glass elements, small carnations or tailor's pins came in handy. Tiffany's stained glass technique involves a lot of soldering - you will need a fairly powerful soldering iron 60 ... 100W with accessories, preferably equipped with at least the simplest temperature controller from a series-connected dimmer. Flux brush. You should take care of good lighting of the workplace - a pair of table lamps will come in handy.

Materials.
In addition to the colored glass itself, a piece of thick plywood or chipboard was needed - a little larger than the dimensions of the future stained-glass window, pieces of linoleum of the same size - a soft base into which it is convenient to stick pins. Useful thin "sausage" polyethylene. Adhesive tape, special copper foil with an adhesive layer. Solder, acid flux, chemicals to set the patina of the desired color, as well as some special ones for stained glass. A solvent, such as acetone or alcohol, "steel wool" may come in handy. Cotton rag. Four slats with small carnations, for the "border" of the future stained glass.

As a matter of fact, everything starts with a sketch of a stained-glass window and emerges into a “cardboard”. This is a finished sketch, life-size, from which they draw, sculpt or cut glass. To be used as a stained-glass window, the drawing must meet some specific requirements - its parts should not be too complex, too thin. Otherwise, they will be difficult to cut and fit. It is better to break large and complex fragments into several simple ones, but without fanaticism. It is difficult to draw a stained-glass window with very fine details, here you need to either use a mixed technique, for example, combine it with glass painting or “fusing” - the fusion of colored glass in an oven. In the general case, with a rather rough styling, you have to put up with it. However, this kind of sketches can also be quite expressive.

Colored stained glass, together with some specific stained glass materials (chemicals, copper foil), I ordered from special comrades who sell this kind of things. As a rule, they sell battles, fragments of stained glass, for small work, it is more convenient to order them.

The drawing was photographed for digitization. Now, if necessary, it can be printed in any quantity and any reasonable size - my printer prints A4 format, so I had to use the "poster" printing mode - the picture is divided into several sheets.

From one of the printed drawings I cut out templates - the contours of future elements. By the way, the border lines between the elements should be clear, but possibly thinner, this will give a minimum error when marking the elements on the glass and when processing glass, the edges of the elements will have to be turned less.

As a flat base, I used a piece of plywood with two layers of linoleum on top of it. With the size of the stained-glass window, no matter how significant it is, it is better to take the base evenly and firmly - for example, chipboard. Linoleum bedding is a miracle how good it is for sticking pins, they hold on quite firmly, sticking is easy enough. You will have to stick a lot of them, so the moment is important.

On top of the linoleum, I laid the printed drawing - “cardboard” and, to protect it from water drops, wrapped it with “sausage” polyethylene - when fitting the glass elements, they are grinded on a machine tool with a diamond, water-washed tool, and wet glasses have to be applied to the drawing - the inkjet printer ink blurs . By the way, that is why the felt-tip pen for drawing on glass must also be waterproof.

In general, the main process looked like this - I cut out several fragments from the “cardboard” printout so as not to get confused, the fragments were logically connected - petals, parts of a leaf, etc. Before cutting out, each fragment was numbered and this number was transferred to the general, whole drawing. The future stained-glass window is assembled from the wrong side, that is, on the colored glass located facing the “operator”, we turn the templates over with the reverse side. We outline the template with an alcohol indelible felt-tip pen, number it, cut it out. The photo shows a conventional roller glass cutter with oil supply. From a hardware store. It is not very convenient to cut curves for them, but it is possible. Then a special glass cutter with a narrow head got to me and it became more fun.

Tools and materials for soldering

COPPER TAPE

Used for framing various segments, stained glass, profiling the edge of the U-shaped. It happens in different widths, with one self-adhesive side. Copper tape can be glued either manually or with a special device. The electric grinding wheel allows you to better process the glass and make the edge smoother.

SOLDERING IRONS

  • 5 colored stained glass sheets in different shades, each about 25 x 25 cm
  • scissors
  • solder (rod) with 50% tin content

Thus, go from one piece of glass to another, cutting out templates from cardboard, and following them from glass, and laying them out on paper. From turquoise glass, cut out the central rhombus and small triangles.

Break off pieces of glass with your hands or use tongs. Always keep the desktop clean, remove the fragments with a brush. The stained glass will begin to play with different shades.

Cut out the pink and yellow glass pieces.

Cut out the details from the green glass. To ensure that the stained-glass window does not differ in size from the original project, the size of each detail must be carefully checked.

When the glass is fixed, you can proceed to the final soldering. Solder the copper edging with soldering liquid, starting from the central diamond, break off a 1 cm long piece from the tin rod. Wait until the tin begins to melt, and stretch it, following the line of the copper tape. Break off another piece of tin, heat it and stretch it, continuing to cover the copper. In order for the first and second lines of welding to connect, run the tip over the bumps, heat up and wait for the surface of the tin to straighten itself.

Sequentially process the central part of the stained glass window. Connect all the finished blocks. Before each soldering, do not forget to apply soldering fluid. After soldering the central part, go to the side windows. Every time one line meets another, pause to bring them together.

The solder seam should be slightly convex so that the copper tape does not show through from under it, and so that it does not go beyond the edges of the stained-glass window, leave a few millimeters from the edge.

Wipe the stained glass window with a cloth dampened with soapy water.

OVAL STAINED GLASS WITH CURVED LINES

GLASS CUTTING

Start working with glass for the background, cut out templates from cardboard, remembering to remove the double line. These glasses are cut from the smooth side. Make cuts on the glass.

When working with curved lines, use only tongs. Remember that you can only get closer to the desired shape of the part by making many cuts in the same direction.

For leaves and stems of flowers, use different types of green glass to get a chiaroscuro pattern. The flowers are carved in white opal glass, while some other segments are in pink.

Cut out the template from cardboard, make cuts on the glass and scratch it to get as close as possible to the desired shape.

The pestles are made of yellow opal glass.

EDging WITH COPPER TAPE

Before you begin edging, wipe the glass. Place the glass in the middle of the copper tape, making sure that the tape fits snugly against the concave surface. Press firmly with your fingers.

Correct the solder lines with a cutter where the stepped irregularities are. Arrange the parts according to the drawing and prepare for soldering.

SOLDERING

Once you've applied soldering fluid to the copper, secure the various pieces of glass so that they can't move. Apply soldering fluid with a brush, break off a piece of tin rod 1 cm long, heat it and stretch it over a copper tape. Start in the center of the stained glass window.

To solder the outer edge, take a piece of glass, place it on the stained glass window and circle the outer contour with a felt-tip pen. Make a scratch with a glass cutter following the drawing.

Turn the stained glass window over and solder the glass on the reverse side. Apply soldering fluid and solder. When finished soldering on the back side, turn the stained glass over.

Check that the soldering was done well, correct all the bumps with a soldering iron and wipe the stained glass window with a cloth dipped in soapy water. Irregularities along the edge of the stained-glass window can be trimmed with a file for soft metals. Position the stained-glass window so that it protrudes slightly from the edge of the table, and, pressing lightly, sand it.

1. Enlarge the drawing on the copier and transfer it to life size on paper and cardboard.

In one of our articles, we already talked about the Tiffany technique, then we considered the possibility of making a stained glass window (see the article “Tiffany stained glass window”). In the same article, we want to tell the reader about a similar process, but with a different end result. So we will talk about how to make a lamp made of colored glass in the Tiffany style. It should be noted right away that this is a complex matter and will require from you not only skill, time and patience, but also proper materials and tools.
Let it not seem to you that such a lamp will not be expensive if you assemble it at home. In fact, this is also not a cheap hobby, but first things first.

Materials and tools for making a lamp made of colored glass in the style of "Tiffany"

Of the tools we need: pliers, a soldering iron, scissors, a hammer, a grinder, a glass cutter and our hands.

Of the materials, we will need to have: a copper tape with a self-adhesive base, solder, chemicals for better soldering and preventing oxidation after it. Textolite platinum, those that are used for the manufacture of electronic circuit boards. Of course, we need glass.

Glass for stained-glass windows, and in our case for a lamp, is used special. Such glass is designed specifically for the production of works in the style of "Tiffany". It should be noted that this glass is not cheap in Russia and the CIS countries, although in the “decaying” capitalist countries the price tag is an order of magnitude lower. So we have such glass with an area of ​​​​0.6-0.8 square meters. m can cost $ 70 apiece. That is why the production of such is not always cost-effective if you do it once.

The process of making a lamp from colored glass in the style of "Tiffany" with your own hands

The production of stained-glass windows using the Tiffany technique does not consist in bonding glass elements with a screed, glue or any other means and devices, but in soldering them with tin solder. Each piece of glass is turned to size, wrapped in copper tape, laid out in accordance with the pattern and soldered together. After that, the finished stained-glass window is covered with a patina. First of all, we decide on the future pattern and clearly outline the individual parts along which the glass will be cut further. Also, in order not to get confused, the elements on the template can be numbered.

We begin the preparation of glass elements. So when cutting glass, you need to have certain skills, which also do not come instantly. You can learn more about the process of cutting glass from the article "How to cut glass". Next, we give the glass the final correct shape, using a grinding machine for this.

We begin to try on and adjust the resulting elements of colored glass. The work is long, requiring accuracy and patience.

For basing the stained-glass window, it is possible to use guide rails.
After trying on the pieces of glass, we begin to glue each of them with copper tape, which has a self-adhesive base on one side, like mounting tape.

Now we collect the same ornament, but the glass is already framed with a copper tape. We fix the stained-glass window between the rails, we start soldering.

On the edges wrapped in copper foil, we apply soldering acid with a brush, melt the tin, which connects the elements together.

Be aware that acid fumes and fumes during soldering are very harmful to health, which is why it is necessary to work primarily in a respirator, as well as with good ventilation.
Turn the stained glass window over and solder the reverse side in the same way

So we solder (collect) all 4 walls of the lamp

We connect the walls to each other, first making the basing so that the walls are perpendicular to each other and the base on which they are installed.

For fastening the walls, it is possible to use copper wire, for soldering it into the seam. Thus, the assembly will be more brutal and strong. We make the cover by analogy with the walls. The only thing that the cover should differ from the walls in is that it should have holes (s) through which warm air from the light bulb will escape.

Solder the cover on the lamp.

To fix the plafond in the wooden base of the lamp, we solder a textolite support from below.

As a result, we get a long-awaited lamp that looks much better live than any, even the best photo, can convey to you.
